Book Participants Perceptions of the Instructional Design of an Online Professional Development Module for Teaching English Language Learners

Download or read book Participants Perceptions of the Instructional Design of an Online Professional Development Module for Teaching English Language Learners written by Linda J. Collins and published by . This book was released on 2009 with total page 184 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Using Q methodology, thirteen online instructors shared subjective opinions about the instructional design of an online professional development module intended to provide teachers with basic information for supporting English language learners academically. The researcher selected a set of thirty-six sort items comprised of screen shots taken from the online module. Participants sorted items on a continuum according to their perceptions of the tasks' cognitive demand, scaffolding, and relevance to their work. Through factor analysis, the researcher compared participants' views of the instructional design of the module. Two factor groups emerged from each of the three sorting activities. Multimedia features such as videos or electronic activities and assessments with feedback scaffolded learning for some learners; others, however, considered didactic instructional techniques such as on-screen text, downloadable handouts and video commentaries to be more effective scaffolding. Although all participants were involved with K-12 education, none ranked designing instructional modifications for an ELL case study as relevant to her work. Implications of the study are that cognitive demand can be perceived as being required to carry out complex tasks such as applying or analyzing information and high cognitive demand may be viewed as being told new content. Varied learning preferences also need to be considered in the design of how to provide scaffolding in online learning experiences, particularly in planning how to transmit new information. Instructional designers need to achieve a balance between active knowledge construction and didactic techniques when developing online professional development modules. Also, they need to design instruction so as to help learners make clear connections between specific module tasks and the solution to these tasks. Recommendations for further research include investigating how online tasks can be designed for different learning styles and how scaffolding can be provided for new content in ways that benefit different types of learners. Researchers might investigate how to evaluate online learning to determine how learners benefit from modules such as the one in this study. They might also investigate results of having more classroom teachers in the p-set and how educators believe new information should be presented in online learning environments."--Abstract.

Book excerpt: Scientific Study from the year 2024 in the subject Pedagogy - The Teacher, Educational Leadership, , language: English, abstract: This study investigates the landscape of online teacher professional development (PD) through a comprehensive analysis of two large-scale datasets. The data for this paper has been collected from two international assessments, namely the Teaching and Learning International Survey (TALIS) 2018 and the National Teacher and Principal Survey (NTPS) 2017-18. Gender, Teaching Experience, Subjects Taught, School Locations, Internet Connection and the Availability of Professional Development Teachers' beliefs about the value of participating in professional development also have Variables that affect Online PD Participation Patterns, Teaching Practices, and Effectiveness. Descriptive findings document effects at teacher, school, and country levels and shed light on online PD programs' elaborate and hierarchical structure. According to the aforementioned results, a high percentage of PD’s online participation is affirmed (68.7% TALIS, 72.3% NTPS) as well the positive outcomes of the analyzed PD on teaching practices, especially regarding ICT use (Cohen’s d = 0.59). ICT self-efficacy was also the most significant predictor of perceived online PD effectiveness (β = 0. 227, p

Book Advancing Online Course Design and Pedagogy for the 21st Century Learning Environment

Download or read book Advancing Online Course Design and Pedagogy for the 21st Century Learning Environment written by Chatham, Daniel and published by IGI Global. This book was released on 2021-01-08 with total page 382 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The current learning environment is substantially different than what existed for most of the 20th century. Learners and teachers today must navigate in perpetually changing contexts where education is influenced by technological advancement and obsolescence, economic barriers, a changing employment landscape, and even international politics. Studies indicate that employers seek to hire graduates with strong skills in areas coalescing around international awareness, creativity, communication, leadership, and teamwork. Skills and experiences in these areas are necessary preparation for the current economy and to pursue jobs that do not exist yet, while providing some insulation against the obsolescence of industries that lack these characteristics. These interpersonal skills are not often the subject of students’ degrees, yet there are opportunities in online education to cultivate them. With increased interest in new career options comes the need to reconsider how to teach subjects in the increasingly online environment. Advancing Online Course Design and Pedagogy for the 21st Century Learning Environment is a critical reference book that navigates today’s dynamic education requirements and provides examples of how online learning can foster growth in skill areas necessary for career advancement through effective course design. Moreover, it helps educators gain insight into online pedagogy and course design for the 21st century learner and prepares them to convert traditional courses and enhance existing online courses, thereby supporting students’ growth and development in the highly dynamic online learning environment. Focusing on specific learning activities, assessments, engagement, communication techniques, and more, this book provides a valuable resource for those seeking to upgrade teaching and learning into the online environment, those that seek better employment outcomes for their students, and those seeking to explore contemporary online course design strategies or examples. This includes teachers, instructional designers, curriculum developers, academicians, researchers, and students.

Book Preparing to Teach English Language Learners

Download or read book Preparing to Teach English Language Learners written by Elsa S. Billings and published by . This book was released on 2004 with total page 750 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Emerging technologies such as the Internet, online video, and synchronous/asynchronous communication tools show promise in addressing problematic issues in teacher education and professional development (Eastmond, 1998), including addressing the gap between theory and practice, supporting critical analysis of pedagogy, and situating learning in practice as it depicts the complex nature of teaching (Ball, 2002; Center for Education, 2001; Grant, 1996). However, the degree to which courses that utilize these technologies are founded on solid pedagogical theory and research is unclear. This is particularly the case with online courses which are cropping up across the United States. This study explored the effectiveness of an online course created by researchers and educators at Stanford University. The course was one in a series of online courses around effective practices in teaching English language learners (ELLs) that led to California's Cross-Cultural, Language and Academic Development (CLAD) certification. California's CLAD program has existed in various forms since the early 1980's, yet research on it is very limited (Walqui, 1998; Whitenack, 1995). The course utilized a multimedia, online platform with video cases of effective practice in classrooms with ELLs as the main form of instruction. Study participants were 21 in-service teachers. Transcripts of online discussions served as the data source. This study utilized qualitative content analyses of online discussions, descriptive statistics, and a Reflection Rubric specifically developed for this study. Findings showed mixed, yet promising evidence of conceptual change, reflection, and community development. Each of these areas was present in this online CLAD course, with issues that surfaced around each mirroring those found in face-to-face courses. Findings revealed instances of new knowledge and conceptual changes in understanding, as well as deficits and reliance on prior conceptions based mainly on personal experiences. Participants' willingness to reflect on practice varied, as did the depth of their reflection in the times that they did reflect. Many participants avoided reflection altogether, especially on their own practice. Implications stemming from this study include contributions for the advancement of online courses, diversity training, and the development of a theoretical framework with which to both design and study online courses.
