Book Coherent Multiple Aperture Optical Imaging Systems Analysis and Design

Download or read book Coherent Multiple Aperture Optical Imaging Systems Analysis and Design written by Dana J. Bergey and published by . This book was released on 1987 with total page 110 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The imaging of simple objects through coherent multiple aperture optical imaging systems was investigated. Multiple aperture telescopes are a candidate technology for the Strategic Defense Initiative missions of surveillance, tracking, and kill assessment. In this thesis, the multiaperture images of edges, slits, rectangles, and circles were theoretically predicted and experimentally produced. Photographs of the actual images produced in the lab were compared to the theoretical images, and the analytical and computer prediction techniques were found to be accurate. All of the results were analyzed to determine how different multiaperture geometries affected the images. It was found that multiaperture geometries affected the images. It was found that multiaperture imaging produces edge enhancement. The position of a single edge could be found exactly, while multiple edges sometimes produced slight edge shifts. A computer program was developed tat predicts that edge shifts that will be observed when imaging through a given multiple aperture. Larger subaperture spacings were found to exhibit better resolution but produced more ringing about the edges. The possibility of rotating the multiple aperture system to gather more information was discussed, as well as designs that include a central subaperture.

Book Computational Phase Correction of a Partially Coherent Multi aperture System

Download or read book Computational Phase Correction of a Partially Coherent Multi aperture System written by Sarah Elaine Krug and published by . This book was released on 2020 with total page 233 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Multi-aperture arrays can be used to reduce the size, weight, cost, and power of an imaging system. However, all of the apertures in an array need to be properly phased in order to create a synthesized image with the maximum possible resolution gain. Phase errors that obstruct aperture phasing can be caused by hardware misalignments or atmospheric turbulence. Remapping the aperture fields between the entrance and exit pupils of an imaging system can be used for piston, tip, and tilt corrections. Remapping the pupils separates the components of the spatial frequency spectrum of an image, allowing maximum likelihood estimation to be used for piston estimation while a least squares matrix method estimates the tip and tilt errors. Images generated to simulate different amounts of atmospheric turbulence and image noise were used to test these piston, tip, and tilt correction algorithms. It was found that atmospheres with Fried parameters the size of a single aperture show the strongest correction results. Isoplanatic sections of images can be corrected if they are masked to the size of an isoplanatic patch and as long as there is enough spatial frequency support. The final phase corrected results are comparable with, or better than, the results of blind deconvolution for higher signal to noise ratios. Pupil remapping is done using blazed gratings located at an intermediate image plane to create a wavelength dependent aperture shift that results in a constant shift in the spatial frequencies. If the apertures in an array are placed along only one axis, the target or imaging system can be rotated and multiple images can be collected, corrected, and rotationally synthesized to create resolution gain in all directions. Future work could include expanding on isoplanatic correction techniques; improving piston, tip, and tilt estimation methods; and creating an experimental system with more than two apertures that could be tested in the field.

Book The Apodisation of Aberrated Coherent Multiaperture Optical Imaging Systems

Download or read book The Apodisation of Aberrated Coherent Multiaperture Optical Imaging Systems written by Arley J. Hugghins and published by . This book was released on 1985 with total page 125 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This investigation determined that the application of a Gaussian apodiser did not improve the imaging performance through a coherent multiaperture optical imaging system. This was the case whether the object was a point source or an edge, whether the dilution was increased or held constant, or whether aberrations were present or not present. Further, the investigation determined that the amount of spacing between the subaperture which either an aberrated or unaberrated optical system could tolerate and still obtain acceptable imaging fell dramatically. The analysis was accomplished with computer codes which made use of Fourier transform techniques to perform the imaging. The edge imaging results of this study can be applied without loss of generality to that of an imaging system with an annular exit pupil. (Theses).

Book Multiaperture Optical System Research

Download or read book Multiaperture Optical System Research written by RTS LABS INC GAINESVILLE FL. and published by . This book was released on 1984 with total page 75 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A lens corrleates unambiguously one object point with one and only one image point. In the case of multiaperture optics one object point may be observed by several eyelets, which in turn may create disks, rings, or even irregularly shaped figures as image elements - corresponding to the one object point. The correlation albeit being non-imaging is unambigous but also multiple, allowing verification by coincidence. The advantage of multiaperture optics are: Small size; Ruggedness; Mass production; Large field of view; and No focussing required. It was the object of the effort reported here to explore if such a device could be built and to predict the performance of such a device by computer model.

Book Two Point Resolution Criterion for Multi Aperture Optical Systems

Download or read book Two Point Resolution Criterion for Multi Aperture Optical Systems written by Steven M. Watson and published by . This book was released on 1987 with total page 92 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Two point resolution criteria is the classic way of comparing telescopes. However, the standard two point resolution criterion is not appropriate for multi-aperture systems. This paper proposes a new two point resolution criterion based on the idea of thresholding the irradiances of the resulting far field diffraction patterns of multi-aperture optical systems. The threshold was defined as a fraction of the central lobe irradiance. The thresholds varied from 0.1 to 0.9 of the central lobe irradiance of the far field diffraction patterns. Theoretical data of normalized irradiance versus point separation for various multi-aperture optical systems were presented. The two point resolution for these configuration was analyzed. The two point resolution criterion using thresholds was demonstrated. The threshold criterion provided the information necessary to compare the two point resolution performance of a particular multi-aperture optical system illuminated coherently and incoherently. Also, this criterion allowed the comparison of the two point resolution performance of systems composed of three, four, and six subapertures illuminated incoherently. (Theses).
