Book Partial Differential Equations in Classical Mathematical Physics

Download or read book Partial Differential Equations in Classical Mathematical Physics written by Isaak Rubinstein and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1998-04-28 with total page 704 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The unique feature of this book is that it considers the theory of partial differential equations in mathematical physics as the language of continuous processes, that is, as an interdisciplinary science that treats the hierarchy of mathematical phenomena as reflections of their physical counterparts. Special attention is drawn to tracing the development of these mathematical phenomena in different natural sciences, with examples drawn from continuum mechanics, electrodynamics, transport phenomena, thermodynamics, and chemical kinetics. At the same time, the authors trace the interrelation between the different types of problems - elliptic, parabolic, and hyperbolic - as the mathematical counterparts of stationary and evolutionary processes. This combination of mathematical comprehensiveness and natural scientific motivation represents a step forward in the presentation of the classical theory of PDEs, one that will be appreciated by both students and researchers alike.

Book Partial Differential and Integral Equations

Download or read book Partial Differential and Integral Equations written by Heinrich Begehr and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-12-01 with total page 367 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume of the Proceedings of the congress ISAAC '97 collects the con tributions of the four sections 1. Function theoretic and functional analytic methods for pde, 2. Applications of function theory of several complex variables to pde, 3. Integral equations and boundary value problems, 4. Partial differential equations. Most but not all of the authors have participated in the congress. Unfortunately some from Eastern Europe and Asia have not managed to come because of lack of financial support. Nevertheless their manuscripts of the proposed talks are included in this volume. The majority of the papers deal with complex methods. Among them boundary value problems in particular the Riemann-Hilbert, the Riemann (Hilbert) and related problems are treated. Boundary behaviour of vector-valued functions are studied too. The Riemann-Hilbert problem is solved for elliptic complex equations, for mixed complex equations, and for several complex variables. It is considered in a general topological setting for mappings into q;n and related to Toeplitz operators. Convolution operators are investigated for nilpotent Lie groups leading to some consequences for the null space of the tangential Cauchy Riemann operator. Some boundary value problems for overdetermined systems in balls of q;n are solved explicitly. A survey is given for the Gauss-Manin connection associated with deformations of curve singularities. Several papers deal with generalizations of analytic functions with various applications to mathematical physics. Singular integrals in quaternionic anal ysis are studied which are applied to the time-harmonic Maxwell equations.

Book A Collection of Problems on the Equations of Mathematical Physics

Download or read book A Collection of Problems on the Equations of Mathematical Physics written by Vasilij S. Vladimirov and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-11-09 with total page 288 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The extensive application of modern mathematical teehniques to theoretical and mathematical physics requires a fresh approach to the course of equations of mathematical physics. This is especially true with regards to such a fundamental concept as the 80lution of a boundary value problem. The concept of a generalized solution considerably broadens the field of problems and enables solving from a unified position the most interesting problems that cannot be solved by applying elassical methods. To this end two new courses have been written at the Department of Higher Mathematics at the Moscow Physics anrl Technology Institute, namely, "Equations of Mathematical Physics" by V. S. Vladimirov and "Partial Differential Equations" by V. P. Mikhailov (both books have been translated into English by Mir Publishers, the first in 1984 and the second in 1978). The present collection of problems is based on these courses and amplifies them considerably. Besides the classical boundary value problems, we have ineluded a large number of boundary value problems that have only generalized solutions. Solution of these requires using the methods and results of various branches of modern analysis. For this reason we have ineluded problems in Lebesgue in tegration, problems involving function spaces (especially spaces of generalized differentiable functions) and generalized functions (with Fourier and Laplace transforms), and integral equations.

Book Partial Differential Equations

Download or read book Partial Differential Equations written by Walter A. Strauss and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2007-12-21 with total page 467 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Our understanding of the fundamental processes of the natural world is based to a large extent on partial differential equations (PDEs). The second edition of Partial Differential Equations provides an introduction to the basic properties of PDEs and the ideas and techniques that have proven useful in analyzing them. It provides the student a broad perspective on the subject, illustrates the incredibly rich variety of phenomena encompassed by it, and imparts a working knowledge of the most important techniques of analysis of the solutions of the equations. In this book mathematical jargon is minimized. Our focus is on the three most classical PDEs: the wave, heat and Laplace equations. Advanced concepts are introduced frequently but with the least possible technicalities. The book is flexibly designed for juniors, seniors or beginning graduate students in science, engineering or mathematics.

Book Boundary Value Problems of Mathematical Physics

Download or read book Boundary Value Problems of Mathematical Physics written by Ivar Stakgold and published by SIAM. This book was released on 2000-06-30 with total page 1156 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For more than 30 years, this two-volume set has helped prepare graduate students to use partial differential equations and integral equations to handle significant problems arising in applied mathematics, engineering, and the physical sciences. Originally published in 1967, this graduate-level introduction is devoted to the mathematics needed for the modern approach to boundary value problems using Green's functions and using eigenvalue expansions. Now a part of SIAM's Classics series, these volumes contain a large number of concrete, interesting examples of boundary value problems for partial differential equations that cover a variety of applications that are still relevant today. For example, there is substantial treatment of the Helmholtz equation and scattering theory?subjects that play a central role in contemporary inverse problems in acoustics and electromagnetic theory.

Book Partial Differential Equations

Download or read book Partial Differential Equations written by P. R. Garabedian and published by American Mathematical Society. This book was released on 2023-10-19 with total page 686 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From a review of the original edition: This book is primarily a text for a graduate course in partial differential equations, although the later chapters are devoted to special topics not ordinarily covered in books in this field … [T]he author has made use of an interesting combination of classical and modern analysis in his proofs … Because of the author's emphasis on constructive methods for solving problems which are of physical interest, his book will likely be as welcome to the engineer and the physicist as to the mathematician … The author and publisher are to be complimented on the general appearance of the book. —Mathematical Reviews This book is a gem. It fills the gap between the standard introductory material on PDEs that an undergraduate is likely to encounter after a good ODE course (separation of variables, the basics of the second-order equations from mathematical physics) and the advanced methods (such as Sobolev spaces and fixed point theorems) that one finds in modern books. Although this is not designed as a textbook for applied mathematics, the approach is strongly informed by applications. For instance, there are many existence and uniqueness results, but they are usually approached via very concrete techniques. The text contains the standard topics that one expects in an intermediate PDE course: the Dirichlet and Neumann problems, Cauchy's problem, characteristics, the fundamental solution, PDEs in the complex domain, plus a chapter on finite differences, on nonlinear fluid mechanics, and another on integral equations. It is an excellent text for advanced undergraduates or beginning graduate students in mathematics or neighboring fields, such as engineering and physics, where PDEs play a central role.
