Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: I was on the north wall, next to the water cistern, down to a gate hinge, and decided to cut a huge hole for a door to go outside. It was about four by four in size. The above logs stayed in place, and I affixed the hinges to a split pole made of three-foot diameter, and it fit snugly. I always had my rifle close by. As I opened it up and pushed it open, I saw Anna in the field, getting the rest of the buckets. It was as if I was in a movieshe was picking up some stones, when all of a sudden, a huge grizzly bear roared up and stood then ran across the field. Anna was clearly the target. I found my rifle, took it off safety, set it up, and fired at the head as it bounded toward her. My single bullet was to the head. He stumbled then fell dead, and as she turned to be mortified, I was out there, comforting her.

Book Josephus the Jewish War Newly Translated with Extensive Commentary and Archaeological Background Illustrations

Download or read book Josephus the Jewish War Newly Translated with Extensive Commentary and Archaeological Background Illustrations written by Gaalyahu Cornfeld and published by Zondervan Publishing Company. This book was released on 1982 with total page 570 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Josephus' account of a war marked by treachery and atrocity is a superbly detailed and evocative record of the Jewish rebellion against Rome between AD 66 and 70. Originally a rebel leader, Josephus changed sides after he was captured to become a Rome-appointed negotiator, and so was uniquely placed to observe these turbulent events, from the siege of Jerusalem to the final heroic resistance and mass suicides at Masada. His account provides much of what we know about the history of the Jews under Roman rule, with vivid portraits of such key figures as the Emperor Vespasian and Herod the Great. Often self-justifying and divided in its loyalties, "The Jewish War" nevertheless remains one of the most immediate accounts of war, its heroism and its horrors, ever written.

A mortally wounded man comes to their door, begging to be let in. He asks for Karl Hoffmann, their father. Gerta and Max watch as Karl tries in vain to save the man's life. Before he dies, the stranger gives their father a bloodstained packet of documents, along with a message: "For the sake of humanity, the Führer must die. Finish it, Karl!" Book excerpt: An imperial historian and an emperor's history. Velleius Paterculus, who lived in the reigns of Augustus and Tiberius (30 BC-AD 37), served as a military tribune in Thrace, Macedonia, Greece, and Asia Minor, and later, from AD 4 to 12 or 13, as a cavalry officer and legatus in Germany and Pannonia. He was quaestor in AD 7, praetor in 15. He wrote in two books "Roman Histories," a summary of Roman history from the fall of Troy to AD 29. As he approached his own times he becomes much fuller in his treatment, especially between the death of Caesar in 44 BC and that of Augustus in AD 14. His work has useful concise essays on Roman colonies and provinces and some effective compressed portrayals of characters. Res Gestae Divi Augusti. In his 76th year (AD 13-14) the emperor Augustus wrote a dignified account of his public life and work of which the best preserved copy (with a Greek translation) was engraved by the Galatians on the walls of the temple of Augustus at Ancyra (Ankara). It is a unique document giving short details of his public offices and honors; his benefactions to the empire, to the people, and to the soldiers; and his services as a soldier and as an administrator.
