Download or read book The Thermodynamic Machinery of Life written by Michal Kurzynski and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2006-07-09 with total page 438 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Thermodynamics was created in the ?rst half of the 19th century as a theory designed to explain the functioning of heat engines converting heat into mechanical work. In the course of time, while the scope of research in this ?eld was being extended to a wider and wider class of energy transformations, thermodynamics came to be considered as a general theory of machines identi?ed with energy transducers. Imp- tant progress in biochemistry in the ?rst half of the 20th century, and in molecular biology in the second half, made it possible to think of treating even living organisms as machines, at least on the subcellular level. However, success in applying thermodynamics to elucidate the phenomenon of life has been rather mitigated. Two reasons seem to be responsible for this unsatisfactory s- uation. Nineteenth century thermodynamics dealt only with simple (homogeneous) systems in complete equilibrium. Although during the 20th century a nonequilibrium thermodynamics was developed, sta- ing with the Onsager theory of linear response and ending with the Prigogine nonlinear theory of dissipative structures, these theories still concern the originally homogeneous systems. Because living organisms are complex systems with a historically frozen spatial and functional structure, a thermodynamics of both nonequilibrium and complex s- tems is needed for their description. The ?rst goal of the present book is to formulate the foundations of such a thermodynamics.

Book excerpt: Studying the origin of life is one of man’s greatest achievements over the last sixty years. The fields of interest encompassed by this quest are multiple and interdisciplinary: chemistry, physics, biology, biochemistry, mathematics, geology but also statistics, atmospheric science, meteorology, oceanography, and astrophysics. Recent scientific discoveries, such as water on Mars and the existence of super-Earths with atmospheres similar to primordial Earth, have pushed researchers to simulate prebiotic conditions in explaining the abiotic formation of molecules essential to life. This collection of articles offers an overview of recent discoveries in the field of prebiotic chemistry of biomolecules, their formation and selection, and the evolution of complex chemical systems.

Download or read book Ceramic Films and Coatings written by J. B. Wachtman and published by William Andrew. This book was released on 1993-12-31 with total page 474 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is a comprehensive overview of the major important areas of ceramic thin films and coatings. Twenty-one widely respected researchers survey the range of applications of ceramic films and coatings and the techniques used to prepare and characterize them. The book is directed toward potential users of the technology and will also provide a broad update for experts in the field. Ceramic films and coatings are active fields of research and widely used areas of technology. The relatively high hardness and inertness of ceramic materials make ceramic coatings of interest for protection of substrate materials against corrosion, oxidation and wear resistance. The electronic and optical properties of ceramics make these films and coatings important to many electronic and optical devices. The book presents a series of reviews of many of the most active and technically important areas of ceramic films and coatings. It is introduced by an overview of the uses and methods of preparation of ceramic films and coatings. Topics then surveyed include synthetic diamond thin films, high T(subscript c) superconducting films, sol-gel films, protective films for cutting tools, optical films, and electronic films. Also covered are recent advances in improving wear resistance by ion implantation, in providing corrosion resistance by enameling, and in providing thermal protection with plasma sprayed coatings. Major characterization techniques and their capabilities and limitations are also treated.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As part of an increasing interest in radiation embrittlement for aging nuclear reactors, scientists gathered in New Orleans in January 1997 to consider the interests and capabilities of the scientific-testing community and of the commercial light-water-cooled power-reactor industry in terms of improving methods to characterize component integrity. The resulting 37 papers concentrate on the use of unique small and miniature specimens; nondestructive, nonintrusive, and in- situ test techniques for measuring mechanical and fracture properties; the application of tests to irradiation-induced embrittlement; and actual examples of tests to determine material integrity and to evaluate potential component life extension. They consider experimental, analytical, and computational aspects. Annotation copyrighted by Book News, Inc., Portland, OR

Download or read book Radiation Effects in Materials written by Waldemar Alfredo Monteiro and published by BoD – Books on Demand. This book was released on 2016-07-20 with total page 464 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The study of radiation effects has developed as a major field of materials science from the beginning, approximately 70 years ago. Its rapid development has been driven by two strong influences. The properties of the crystal defects and the materials containing them may then be studied. The types of radiation that can alter structural materials consist of neutrons, ions, electrons, gamma rays or other electromagnetic waves with different wavelengths. All of these forms of radiation have the capability to displace atoms/molecules from their lattice sites, which is the fundamental process that drives the changes in all materials. The effect of irradiation on materials is fixed in the initial event in which an energetic projectile strikes a target. The book is distributed in four sections: Ionic Materials; Biomaterials; Polymeric Materials and Metallic Materials.
