Book Parlour Games and the Public Life of Women in Renaissance Italy

Download or read book Parlour Games and the Public Life of Women in Renaissance Italy written by George W. McClure and published by University of Toronto Press. This book was released on 2013-01-01 with total page 337 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Confined by behavioural norms and professional restrictions, women in Renaissance Italy found a welcome escape in an alternative world of play. This book examines the role of games of wit in the social and cultural experience of patrician women from the early sixteenth to the early eighteenth century. Beneath the frivolous exterior of such games as occasions for idle banter, flirtation, and seduction, there often lay a lively contest for power and agency, and the opportunity for conventional women to demonstrate their intellect, to achieve a public identity, and even to model new behaviour and institutions in the non-ludic world. By tapping into the records and cultural artifacts of these games, George McClure recovers a realm of female fame that has largely escaped the notice of modern historians, and in so doing, reveals a cohort of spirited, intellectual women outside of the courts.

PRAISE FOR MYFANWY JONES AND SPIRI TSINTZIRAS ‘In this day and age, it's hard to prise the kids away from their electronic equipment (TV, computers, game consoles and on the list goes), not to mention you, the parent from your chores. But this little corker of a book should help you out. Written by two mothers, it's packed full of fabulous games that families used to play years ago ... Gather up the clan into one room, choose a game (Farkle, Pontoon, Flip the Kipper or Picture Consequences, perhaps) and have a bit of genuine fun, and family time.’ The Herald Sun ‘Wink Murder, Memory, Charades, Twenty Questions - the authors of this book sat musing over all the forgotten parlour games they used to play as children and decided they wanted a book of games, so they wrote it. With a passionate introduction that calls for the reintroduction of parlour games into family life, the authors put forward a case for family members connecting with each other via old-fashioned unplugged fun.’ The Sunday Mail

Book excerpt: A sparkling historical novel based on the remarkable true story of turn-of-the-century con artist May Dugas, once dubbed America's "Most Dangerous Woman.” It’s 1887, and eighteen-year-old May Dugas has ventured to Chicago in hopes of earning enough money to support her family. Yet when circumstances force her to take up residence at the city’s most infamous bordello, she chooses to use her feminine wiles to extract not only sidelong looks but also large sums of money from the men she encounters. Insinuating herself into high society, May lands a well-to-do fiancé—until, that is, a Pinkerton detective named Reed Doherty intervenes. Reed has made it his mission to bring May to justice, and he pursues her across the world, from Shanghai to London and back, until he makes one last daring attempt to corner her. But May still has a few tricks up her sleeve, tricks that just might prove she’s one tough woman to catch.

Book excerpt: A London woman’s perfect life starts to fall to pieces as her fortieth birthday looms in this “delicious, wickedly funny” novel (Library Journal). Celia has an elegant house, a lovely family, and no major worries aside from private schooling and the misplaced zeal of neighborhood-watch vigilantes. But just as she turns forty, the house of cards starts to collapse around her—as her sister and her friends suddenly turn edgy and fickle; a long-time admirer turns into a crude jester; and Celia spies her husband embracing an utterly ghastly woman . . . “Should be welcomed warmly by readers who devour fiction by satiric writers of the Fay Weldon and Patrick Gale variety. Cheek writes with a particularly brittle and dead-on wit that skewers her subjects, English yuppies who have contrived comfortable lives in the just-right suburb of Bedford Park . . . Cheek’s command of absurd situations and her razor-sharp dialogue is dazzling—this is the stuff of which the finest English screwball comedy films used to be made. Even the minor players, from the nosy, haughty cleaning lady to assorted friends and lovers, are richly drawn and perfectly cast.” —Publishers Weekly “A very funny book—one of those rare books that make you laugh out loud. Imagine the wicked social observation of Jilly Cooper mixed with the needle wit of Fay Weldon and you’ll get the picture.” —New Woman

Book excerpt: The object of this volume is to try and lessen the number of dreadful pauses which so many hostesses have experienced with their guests when no one bad courage enough to propose a new game, or had foresight enough to come prepared with a mental list of games that have a right good swing to them. This collection will sufice as a background for working purposes, and while many of them may be familiar, at the same time one does not always think of them readily, and will welcome these as a friend in need. The games under the heading Competitions need preparing in advance, as they cannot be rushed at the last minute. It is as well to decide before sending out the invitations what is to be the principal game of the evening, and then write it on the invitation card. An Evening with Kate will arouse the curiosity of those who do not know the games, and make them all the more anxious to come and find out...

Book excerpt: The Surrealist movement that arose in Europe in the early 1900s used playful procedures and systematic stratagems to create provocative works and challenge the conventions of art, literature, and society. They conducted their experiments through art and polemic, manifesto and demonstration, love and politics. But it was above all through game-playing that they sought to subvert academic modes of inquiry and undermine the complacent certainties of the bourgeoisie. Surrealist games is a delightful compendium that allows the reader to enjoy firsthand the methodologies of the Surreal, with their amazing swings between the verbal and the visual, the beautiful and the grotesque. It is also a box of games to play for fun: poetic, imaginative, revelatory, full of possibilities for unlocking the door to the unconscious and releasing the poetry of collective creativity. The boxed set contains: * A 168-page sewn, illustrated hardcover book packed with outrageous language games, alternative card games, "Dream Lotto," and automatic techniques for making poems, stories, collages, photomontages, and candle-smoke drawings. The illustrations are by such artists as Max Ernst, Hans Arp, and Tristan Tzara * A fold-out game board for the "Goose Game," designed by Andr Breton, Yves Tanguy, and others * A Little Surrealist Dictionary
