Book excerpt: Opening the door to the fun-filled frolics and cerebral sports of yesteryear, Parlor Games presents more than 150 games, puzzles, and activities that will turn any gathering into a festival of laughter and delight. From old favorites like Twenty Questions, Charades, and Blind Man's Bluff to less familiar amusements (including such intriguingly named gems as My Lady's Toilet, The Leg of Mutton, and the One-Yard Dash), the pastimes of gentler times come to life again in this charming and beautifully designed anthology. An indispensable resource for hosts and hostesses looking for novel cocktail-hour or after-dinner entertainment and for moms and dads looking for original and engaging activities for birthday parties or rainy afternoons, Parlor Games provides complete instructions for intellectually challenging paper-and-pencil and memory games as well as such exciting indoor athletic competitions as the Bun Race. Wrapped in an antique-looking cover and written in turn-of-the-century language, Parlor Games has the nostalgic appeal of a book discovered in grand-mother's attic. But it offers today's generation the opportunity to experience a world rich in unexpected adventures and pleasures.

Download or read book Parlor Games and Parties for Young and Old written by Carleton B. Case and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-06-15 with total page 100 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Parlor Games and Parties for Young and Old: Amusement Ideas for All the Family All the Year One of the surest ways to destroy the tension that too frequently characterizes the first hour of an evening party where the guests are not well acquainted with one another is to introduce a guessing game in which the participants do not sit down but move about the room. And if the hostess can make the game reveal the ingenuity of her guests still greater interest and enjoyment will be added and she may increase her laurels won as an entertainer. A game which answers this purpose may be called "Alliterative Acceptance." In response to the invitations, which the hostess should write with as much alliteration as possible, so as to inspire those to whom she writes, each guest is requested to send a sentence of about ten words, the prevailing initial of which is the same as his or her name, and which gives a hint of some characteristic of the writer, such as his business, hobby or personal peculiarity. These sentences, but not the names of the guests, are then written singly on cards and numbered to correspond with the names of the writers. After attaching little loops of baby-ribbon all will be ready for the evening. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt: ...surprised and annoyed that you should have dreamt of consigning such important parts as those of "Mortimer " and the "Lady Araminta' to the care of people so very ill qualified to undertake them. Why! that man O'Brown is nothing but a buffoon. Placid. A wonderful flow of animal spirits, truly, madam. Mrs. B. Animal spirits, indeed! He is simply a clown! And, as for the young woman, she is, if possible, worse. Placid. In the "singing chambermaid " business she is excellent, madam; you may take my word for it. Mrs. B. My good man, "Lady Araminta " is not a chambermaid. But what is to be done now? Placid. Well, madam, if you take my advice, I should say it would be better to postpone the performance. Mrs. B. That I have already told you is impossible. The play must come off to-morrow evening. Placid. Then if you would permit O'Brown to Mrs. B. Certainly not. Most emphatically not. I will not hear of that man again. Placid. Miss De Jones, at all events, might Mrs. B. No, no, Mr. Placid. I have seen quite enough of her, also. Rather than let her appear in the character of "Araminta," I would positively undertake the part myself. Placid. (Brightening up.) Well, madam, if you Mrs. B. No, I must not. With my aristocratic connections, it would be too much of a scandal. But something or other must be devised. Placid. Well, I will summon Testy again. He is a very shrewd, clear-headed fellow, and may yet be able to help us out of our difficulty. Mrs. B. Send for him, by all means. Not that I think he will be able to do much, but there can be no harm in trying. Placid. He shall come directly. (Placid rings a hand-bell. Enter Testy.) Testy. What d'you want now? You're always stirring a man up. Bah! One never...

Book Indoor Games For Awkward Moments

Download or read book Indoor Games For Awkward Moments written by Ruth Blakely and published by Read Books Ltd. This book was released on 2016-12-21 with total page 107 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The object of this volume is to try and lessen the number of dreadful pauses which so many hostesses have experienced with their guests when no one bad courage enough to propose a new game, or had foresight enough to come prepared with a mental list of games that have a right good swing to them. This collection will sufice as a background for working purposes, and while many of them may be familiar, at the same time one does not always think of them readily, and will welcome these as a friend in need. The games under the heading Competitions need preparing in advance, as they cannot be rushed at the last minute. It is as well to decide before sending out the invitations what is to be the principal game of the evening, and then write it on the invitation card. An Evening with Kate will arouse the curiosity of those who do not know the games, and make them all the more anxious to come and find out...
