Book Cross Cultural Perspectives on Parliamentary Discourse

Download or read book Cross Cultural Perspectives on Parliamentary Discourse written by Paul Bayley and published by John Benjamins Publishing. This book was released on 2004-02-26 with total page 391 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The activity of parliaments is largely linguistic activity: they produce talk and they produce texts. Broadly speaking, the objectives that this discourse aims to satisfy are similar all over the world: to legitimate or contest legislation, to represent diverse interests, to scrutinise the activity of government, to influence opinion and to recruit and promote political actors. But the discourse of different national parliaments is subject to variation, at all linguistic levels, on the basis of history, cultural specificity, and political culture in particular. Through the use of various analytical tools of functional linguistics, this volume seeks to provide explanatory analyses of parliamentary discourse in different countries – Britain, Germany, Italy, Mexico, Spain, Sweden and the United States – and to explore its peculiarities. Each chapter outlines a particular methodological framework and its application to instances of parliamentary discourse on important issues such as war, European integration, impeachment and immigration.

Book Patterns of Parliamentary Behavior

Download or read book Patterns of Parliamentary Behavior written by Herbert Döring and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-03-02 with total page 244 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume begins where the first Döring book of 1995 finished by considering what effects the rules had on legislative output during the same period. It addresses four distinct yet complementary research topics: - the connection between a number of veto players and law production in West European parliamentary democracies - the impact of closed versus open rules - the effects of committee structure and organization on the degree of conflict or consensus on the procedure of passing legislation - the importance of agenda setting and agenda control for the prevention of cycling across issues and the distribution of particular benefits of shifting and transient majorities. Fundamental to this volume is the ability of the project group to fashion an original data set. As a consequence, this volume is able to ascertain the extent to which parliamentary procedures contributed to shaping policy output in this field during the 1980s.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This title was first published in 2002: This comprehensive account of the growth, decline and resurgence of parliament in Bangladesh examines the ’new’ parliament that have been elected in Bangladesh since the 1990s. It identifies key dimensions of their activities such as the nature of legizlation passed, the types of issues raised, the strategies that members have adopted to get things done, the techniques they have used to resolve conflicts and the measures they have taken to strengthen the parliament. Examining the role of the opposition MPs and government back benchers in the parliamentary process, Nizam Ahmed also provides an insightful guide to the factors that influence behaviour and analyzes their significance for democratic consolidation. Combining both theory and practice, this worthy contribution will prove its value as both an accessible reference and a revealing read to parliamentarians and parliamentary scholars alike.

Book European Foreign Policy and the European Parliament in the 1990s

Download or read book European Foreign Policy and the European Parliament in the 1990s written by Donatella M. Viola and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2019-06-04 with total page 536 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This title was first published in 2000: This book investigates the European Parliament’s stance vis-a-vis the 1990-1991 Gulf and 1991-1992 Yugoslav crises. In unveiling the parliamentary multi-faceted view of these events, reference has been made to the positions taken by constituent political groups and their voting behaviour. In particular, the following questions have been addressed: has the European Parliament sought to define and shape a common foreign policy with respect to the above crises? What specific functions have the European Parliament political groups performed? Have political groups succeeded in achieving an internal cohesion? Has the European Parliament overcome divisions among its members through the formation of party coalitions? despite the considerable flow of published material on external relations of the European Union and the European Parliament, virtually no study has explored in-depth the links between these two areas. The purpose of this book is to fill the gap in the existing literature, breaking new ground by combining a qualitative and qualitative analysis of parliamentary behaviour with foreign policy.

Book The Political Economy of Sustainability

Download or read book The Political Economy of Sustainability written by Fred P. Gale and published by Edward Elgar Publishing. This book was released on 2018-07-27 with total page 253 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This theoretical and practical book builds on the knowledge that sustainability’s value pluralism cannot be reconciled with the value monism of classical, neoclassical, nationalist or socialist political economy. Developing the concept of sustainability value (SV), which requires integrating economic (exchange), social (labour), environmental (intrinsic) and cultural (use) values in all processes of extraction, manufacturing, trade, consumption and disposal, the book reformulates our understanding of key political economy topics such as trade, investment, preference formation, corporate governance and the role of the state. The book illustrates how SV is being realised via multi-stakeholder networks which, forming at the community, national and global levels, enable the required cross-value deliberation.
