Book The British Aircraft Industry during the First World War

Download or read book The British Aircraft Industry during the First World War written by Tim Jenkins and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2023-10-05 with total page 217 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this book, Tim Jenkins examines the factory worker poisonings and suspect government procurement procedures that resulted in Allied success in the air during First World War. The early development of aircraft during World War I was an important yet dangerous part of the war effort seen in the First World War and although many descriptions of daring aerial combat have been written, the risk to those involved in the manufacture of such machines remains less well known. Tetrachlorethane, a poisonous solvent contained in aircraft dope, was responsible for a number of civilian deaths in aircraft factories and although the British knew the substance to be lethal, they were much slower than their American and German counterparts in sourcing alternatives. In this groundbreaking book, Tim Jenkins explores the use of Tetrachlorethan and brings to light the concerns and warnings voiced by the international medical profession. His examination considers the government's reasons for its use of the poisonous solvent to create a compelling yet scholarly account which takes in corruption, negligence and wartime manufacture. This book will be vital to scholars studying military production during the First World War.

Download or read book Cosmo Lang written by Robert Beaken and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2012-10-09 with total page 384 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The period 1928-1942 saw some of the greatest political and social upheavals in modern British history. Lang, as Archbishop of Canterbury, led the Church of England through this tumultuous period and was a pivotal influence in political and religious decision-making. In this book, Robert Beaken provides a new perspective on Lang, including his considerable relationship with the royal family. Beaken also shows how Lang proved to be a sensitive leader during wartime, opposing any demonisation of the enemy and showing compassion to conscientious objectors. Despite his central role at a time of flux, there has been little written on Lang since the original biography published in 1949, and history has not been kind to this intellectually gifted but emotionally complex man. Although Lang has often been seen as a fairly unsuccessful archbishop who was resistant to change, Beaken shows that he was, in fact, an effective leader of the Anglican community at a time when the Church of England was internally divided over issues surrounding the Revised Prayer Book and its position in an ever-changing world. Lang's reputation is therefore ripe for reassessment. Drawing on previously unseen material and first-hand interviews, Beaken tells the story of a fascinating and complex man, who was, he argues, Britain's first 'modern' Archbishop of Canterbury.

Book Governing Australia

Download or read book Governing Australia written by Mitchell Dean and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1998-06-22 with total page 290 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Inspired by Foucault's discussion of governmentality, this book makes a major contribution to our understanding of government. The book is interdisciplinary in approach, and combines theoretical discussion with empirical focus. It includes a substantial introduction by the editors, and contains work critiquing the central notion of governmentality. A range of topics are discussed, including regulation of the unemployed and people with HIV/AIDS, sexual harassment in the military, the corporatisation of education, new contractualism and governing personality. While their topics are varied, the contributors explore a range of shared concerns, including notions of problematisation, expert knowledge, rationality, freedom and autonomy, giving the volume focus and rigour. This book will be essential reading in political science, sociology, law, philosophy, education and economics.

Book Picturing Animals in Britain 1750 1850

Download or read book Picturing Animals in Britain 1750 1850 written by Diana Donald and published by Yale University Press. This book was released on 2007-01-01 with total page 402 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From fine art paintings by such artists as Stubbs and Landseer to zoological illustrations and popular prints, a vast array of animal images was created in Britain during the century from 1750 to 1850. This highly original book investigates the rich meanings of these visual representations as well as the ways in which animals were actually used and abused. What Diana Donald discovers in this fascinating study is a deep and unresolved ambivalence that lies at the heart of human attitudes toward animals. The author brings to light dichotomies in human thinking about animals throughout this key period: awestruck with the beauty and spirit of wild animals, people nevertheless desired to capture and tame them; the belief that other species are inferior was firmly held, yet at the same time animals in stories and fables were given human attributes; though laws against animal cruelty were introduced, the overworking of horses and the allure of sport hunting persisted. Animals are central in cultural history, Donald concludes, and compelling questions about them--then and now--remain unanswered.
