Book Parliament in Ethiopia

Download or read book Parliament in Ethiopia written by Mercy Fekadu Mulugeta and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2023-08-15 with total page 200 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: African legislatures remain understudied, yet democratisation, development and peacebuilding all depend on these key political institutions. This book provides an in-depth analysis of Ethiopia’s parliament, a country of key political and strategic importance to the whole region. In 1931, Ethiopia’s monarchical government introduced a system of parliamentary democracy with seemingly contradictory objectives; it wanted to legitimize its rule in a changing world, and also needed to provide a respectable retirement vocation (as senators and deputies) to sections of the aristocracy it ousted from power. This paradox of recognizing the parliament as essential to modern governance yet deliberately seeking weak institutions that are unable or unwilling to challenge those in power continues to haunt the parliament to this day. Ethiopia continues to struggle to maintain political stability, and the separation of power between government and parliament and a system of checks and balances are yet to substantially flourish. Drawing on extensive original data gathered from interviews and surveys, this book investigates the legal and practical status of federal representative institutions in Ethiopia from 1931 up to and including 2021. It delves into the rules and routines of parliament, its contextually and historically grounded culture of representation, and the techniques of manoeuvring executive bureaucracies. The book also aims to understand the extent of civil dis/engagement and the perceptions and role of citizens in shaping parliament, and how the mandates and functions of individual MPs are also determined by cultural and socio-economic factors such as gender, population, inequality and conflict. This book’s in-depth and original analysis will be of interest to researchers across African studies, politics, development, and governance.

Book Constitution of Ethiopia

Download or read book Constitution of Ethiopia written by The Government of Ethiopia and published by DigiCat. This book was released on 2022-08-10 with total page 38 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ethiopia has had four constitutions throughout its history: the 1931 version, the 1955 version, the 1987 version, and the 1995 version; which is currently in effect. Until the adoption of the first of these constitutions, the concepts of Ethiopian government had been codified in the Kebra Nagast (which presented the concept that the legitimacy of the Emperor of Ethiopia was based on its asserted descent from king Solomon of ancient Israel), and the Fetha Nagast (a legal code used in Ethiopia at least as early as 1450 to define the rights and responsibilities of the monarch and subjects, as defined by the Ethiopian Orthodox Tewahedo Church).

Book Legislative Constitutionality of the Ethiopian Federal Parliament

Download or read book Legislative Constitutionality of the Ethiopian Federal Parliament written by Endalkachew Geremew and published by LAP Lambert Academic Publishing. This book was released on 2012-08 with total page 152 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Lawmaking power is one of the most significant and influential constitutional law sphere which serves as apt benchmark to check whether a given country has actually a better record of limited government, prevalence of rule of law or democracy. Coupled with other constitutional tools of controlling the proper use of governments' power, constitutions device special modality regarding lawmaking power. Looking in retrospection the Ethiopian context, esp. through employing the features of implied legislative power in federal systems and constrained parliamentary system in perspective under examination, the Ethiopian Constitution appears defective in both accounts. This book vastly appraises the exercise of lawmaking power of the Ethiopian Parliament offering a different lens to trace the constitutionality of certain legislations currently in force while in many respects influenced the existing constitutional order of the polity. The book likewise put in perspective issues readily left out from closer public eyes. Thus, it rejuvenate the discourses in the 'law & politics' approach in Ethiopia to uncover Ethiopia's federal and parliamentary experiments in the pendulum of rule of law.

Book excerpt: Democracy is a concept reflecting European philosophies, struggles and concerns. Many Ethiopian ethnic groups have traditions which may offer more satisfactory and culturally acceptable foundations for a “sovereignty of the people” through time-honored ways of voicing political ideas, ironic observations and vital interests. In line with modern urban life Ethiopians also organize and express their interests in non-governmental organizations, the independent press and advocacy groups representing political and social alternatives. The contributors to this book analyze the democratic potential of these movements and practices, their ability to give a voice to the view from below and their potential contribution to a more genuine participation by the majority of Ethiopians in democratic decision making and bringing the sovereignty of the people a step closer to reality.
