Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Park Structures and Facilities, 1935 In any area in which the preservation of the beauty of Nature is a primary purpose, every modification of the natural landscape, whether it be'by construction of a road or erection of a shelter, is an intrusion. A basic objective of those who are entrusted with development of such areas for the human uses for which they are established, is, it seems to me, to hold these intrusions to a minimum and so to design them that, besides being attractive to look upon, they appear to belong to and be a part of their settings. For some years, the National Park Service, State Park authorities and other agencies which administer natural park areas have been attaining a constantly improved technique of design and execution for the structures that are required for safe, convenient and beneficial public use of these parks. Progress in this field has been especially marked since the incep tion of the Emergency Conservation Work program, with its steadily increasing and sound emphasis on development of recreational facilities, particularly in State Parks. Stimulated. By the problems this work has presented, competent architects have produced designs - and seen them converted into reality - that denote a' real advance in this somewhat specialized field. Herein are presented some of the successful natural park structures, - a group by no means limited to those produced during the past two years or to those designed and erected under National Park Service supervision; Since tastes difier and since varying experience produces varying conclusions, it is hardly to be expected that there will be unanimous agreement as to the wisdom of including certain of the selected designs, or that no one will take issue with any of the points raised in the discussions that form an important part of the work: Selec tion and discussion alike, however, are the result of most careful and conscientious study. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Park and Recreation Structures, Vol. 1: Administration and Basic Service Facilities Any area in which the preservation of the beauty of Nature is a pri mary purpose, every proposed modification of the natural landscape, whether it be by construction of a road or erection of a shelter, deserves to be most thoughtfully considered. A basic objective of those who are entrusted with development of such areas for the human uses for which they are established is, it seems to me, to hold these modifications to a minimum and so to design them that, besides being attrae tive to look upon, they appear to belong to and be a part of their settings. Progress in this field has been especially marked since the inception of the Emergency Conservation Work program, with its steadily increasing and sound emphasis on development of recreational facilities, particularly in State parks. Stimulated by the problems this work has presented, competent architects have produced designs - and seen them converted into reality - that denote a real advance in this somewhat specialized field. Herein are presented some of the successful natural park structures, a group by no means limited to those produced during the past four years or to those designed and erected under National Park Service supervision. Since tastes differ and since varying experience produces varying conclusions, it is hardly to be expected that there will be unanimous agreement as to the wisdom of including certain of the selected designs, or that no one will take issue with any of the points raised in the discussions that form an important part of the work. Selection and discussion alike, however, are the result of most careful and conscientious study. This book is certain, I believe, to prove of exceptional value to all those who are concerned with the design of park and recreation structures. It should be immensely helpful in stimulating still further improvement in this special field of design. The interest manifested in it in advance of publication indicates a widespread conviction that there is a real place and a real need for such a compilation. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Parks: Their Design, Equipment and Use But there are efficient parks, many of them, and the splendid spirit that in the past has prompted the acquisition of embryonic parks is now interesting itself more and more in their development to meet the needs for which such areas were acquired. Wlith the new posses sions there is becoming apparent a more painstaking study to find just the park chord that responds most harmoniously to the delight and benefit of the greatest number of adults and children. For the youth there has sprung up the specialised park known as the play ground. How far shall the average park serve as a playground? How may the playground serve as a park? This is the sort of question that enlists the thought of those seeking to encourage the setting aside of areas to be devoted to recreation. Parks serve, primarily, two functions - one of recreation, the other of decoration. Here again arises the query, where, if any, is the dividing line between them? There are countless examples of the purely decorative park that might, withmr. Burnap for the past five years has held the position of architect-in-chief of outdoor Washington, and his in uence is easily discernible in the artistic character our parks, squares and public grounds are taking. Book excerpt: A visual exploration and history of one of America's favorite pastimes. Car camping, hike-in tent camping, bivouacking, mountaineering, RV camping, glamping, back yard camping . . . whatever your style, outdoor adventure awaits! For camping enthusiasts, this fascinating (and packable) volume holds a comprehensive look at the origins of the practice and the ways that bring all these enthusiasts together. From the early days of recreational camping in the late nineteenth century through the multitude of modern camping options available today, Making Camp explores the history and evolution of the popular activity through the lens of its most important and familiar components: the campsite, the campfire, the picnic table, the map, the tent, the sleeping bag, as well as the oft invisible systems for delivering water and managing trash. Find out how early nineteenth century German peasants fashioned rudimentary sleeping bags by burrowing into bags full of leaves for the night. Look back over several millennia to learn about the progression of tents from animal skins, goat's hair, and heavy canvas to featherweight nylon. Learn about the ways in which the skills to build and maintain a campfire have been displaced by the portable gas stove. Pinpoint the details of the essential campground map and its unique place in the camping imagination. Each chapter includes a broad range of visuals to help illustrate the rich history of camping and our collective devotion to it, including drawings, patents, diagrams, sketches, paintings, advertisements, and historical photographs. A must-have for avid campers, nature lovers, and all who seek to connect with the universe by sleeping under the stars.
