Book excerpt: Excerpt from Park's Floral Magazine, Vol. 53: November-December, 1922 If you thought a little ahead perhaps you dug your beds and covered them with straw and leaves so that the ground would not be frozen when you were ready to plant. In this case you can go ahead about your work just the same as-if it were earlier in the Fall; the leaves and straw are removed, the beds are, planted, and the leaves go back on top. When bulbs are planted late in the season their blooms are not injured in any way; they sim ply do not give flowers quiteas early in the season as those planted-betas. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Park's Floral Magazine, Vol. 53: A Monthly Journal of Floriculture; April, 1917 The leaves should be well matured by autumn, and water should be gradually withheld until the leaves flag or droop. Then give a slight watering, enough to refresh the foliage, and withhold water again, until the wilting appear ance, then repeat. This alternate watering and drying should be continued for one month, during which time the temperature should range from 50 to 60 degrees. The plant can then be given a temperature 10 degrees warm er, and encouraged to grow by watering freely as before, and keeping the atmosphere moist. The plants will then soon come into bloom, and the blooming period will last for several weeks. When the flowers fade the foliage will develop, and watering should be continued un til the full growth and maturity of the foliage. The bulb can then be shifted into a still larger pot and given a season of rest as before. Thus treated, a single bulb will soon form a clump, and the older the clump the more flowers will be produced. Download or read book Park s Floral Magazine Vol 53 written by Geo. W. Park and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-05-22 with total page 20 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Park's Floral Magazine, Vol. 53: A Monthly Journal of Floriculture; July, 1917 Starting Perennials. Most of the handsome Perennials are readily started from seeds, although there are few of them that germinate so promptly as many of the Annuals. As a rule, the Perennials can be successfully started in July in a protected bed, the soil kept moist until the plants appear. Keep the bed covered with a cloth or paper, removing the covering as soon as the plants show. Such plants as Hollyhock, Campanula, Foxglove and Rudbeckia can be sown in the bed where the plants are to bloom, and in that case sowing may be deferred until the month of August. Where plants are to be transplanted, however, it is well to sow as early in the season as pos sible, say in May or early June, as transplant ing always hinders the early development and blooming of a plant. The Biennials and Perennials are so easily grown, and are so showy and beautiful that it seems strange they are not generally cultivated.
