Download or read book American Parishes written by Gary J. Adler and published by Fordham University Press. This book was released on 2019-07-02 with total page 224 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Parishes are the missing middle in studies of American Catholicism. Between individual Catholics and a global institution, the thousands of local parishes are where Catholicism gets remade. American Parishes showcases what social forces shape parishes, what parishes do, how they do it, and what this says about the future of Catholicism in the United States. Expounding an embedded field approach, this book displays the numerous forces currently reshaping American parishes. It draws from sociology of religion, culture, organizations, and race to illuminate basic parish processes, like leadership and education, and ongoing parish struggles like conflict and multiculturalism. American Parishes brings together contemporary data, methods, and questions to establish a sociological re-engagement with Catholic parishes and a Catholic re-engagement with sociological analysis. Contributions by leading social scientists highlight how community, geography, and authority intersect within parishes. It illuminates and analyzes how growing racial diversity, an aging religious population, and neighborhood change affect the inner workings of parishes. Contributors: Gary J. Adler Jr., Nancy Ammerman, Mary Jo Bane, Tricia C. Bruce, John A. Coleman, S.J., Kathleen Garces-Foley, Mary Gray, Brett Hoover, Courtney Ann Irby, Tia Noelle Pratt, and Brian Starks

Download or read book The Shared Parish written by Brett C. Hoover and published by NYU Press. This book was released on 2014-08-15 with total page 311 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As faith communities in the United States grow increasingly more diverse, many churches are turning to the shared parish, a single church facility shared by distinct cultural groups who retain their own worship and ministries. The fastest growing and most common of these are Catholic parishes shared by Latinos and white Catholics. Shared parishes remain one of the few institutions in American society that allows cultural groups to maintain their own language and customs while still engaging in regular intercultural negotiations over the shared space. This book explores the shared parish through an in-depth ethnographic study of a Roman Catholic parish in a small Midwestern city demographically transformed by Mexican immigration in recent decades. Through its depiction of shared parish life, the book argues for new ways of imagining the U.S. Catholic parish as an organization. The parish, argues Brett C. Hoover, must be conceived as both a congregation and part of a centralized system, and as one piece in a complex social ecology. The Shared Parish also posits that the search for identity and adequate intercultural practice in such parishes might call for new approaches to cultural diversity in U.S. society, beyond assimilation or multiculturalism. We must imagine a religious organization that accommodates both the need for safe space within distinct groups and for social networks that connect these groups as they struggle to respectfully co-exist.

Download or read book Wake Up Lazarus written by Pierre Hegy and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2012 with total page 328 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Today's Catholic Church faces a major decline, and a dramatic renewal is needed to facilitate positive change. Three general factors that contribute to the spiritual decline of all mainline churches and three factors that are special to the Catholic Church. Hegy describes the inner workings of two successful parishes - one evangelical and the other Catholic - to illustrate the strategies used that contribute to vibrant and growing church communities. He also reviews various renewal plans and then presents his personal, long-term plan for renewal in the Catholic Church, with practical implementation suggestions included in each step.

Book excerpt: Are you satisfied with the position of women in the Church today? No? Are you willing to do something about it, but don’t know where to begin? This book will inspire you to pick up the torch of Arlene’s lifetime mission—to see, hear, know and experience women as equals in the Church and in today’s society. Arlene’s work was pivotal in validating both the movement of Catholic feminism and, like Betty Friedan, the general role of women in society. Through her studies of scripture, Arlene emboldened the position of women in church scholarship, condemning the prominence of male thought in philosophy, theology, and psychology. Today, people refer to certain social injustice as a glass ceiling; when the author wrote this book in 1971, the ceiling was more like an unscalable mountain.
