Book Vilfredo Pareto and the Birth of Modern Microeconomics

Download or read book Vilfredo Pareto and the Birth of Modern Microeconomics written by Luigino Bruni and published by Edward Elgar Publishing. This book was released on 2002 with total page 184 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There has been a recent resurgence of interest in the work of Vilfredo Pareto, one of the founders of modern economics. This book reconstructs the genesis and significance of Pareto's theory of choice which is Pareto's greatest contribution to economic science and which was used by John Hicks, amongst others, to develop microeconomics. Hicks, Allen, Samuelson and others acknowledged Pareto as the father of the new ordinalist microeconomics but at the same time, portrayed him as confused and contradictory, caught between the old and new paradigms. Luigino Bruni argues that Pareto's revolution in choice theory is better understood in the context of his own philosophical framework. This framework is revealed by reconstructing his dialogues with economists (Pantaleoni) and philosophers (Vailati and Croce), and by exploring Pareto's economic theory in the light of his philosophy of science. In addition, Luigino Bruni argues that Pareto's contribution was different and more complex than Hicks's ordinalism and Samuelson's operationalism. From this analysis emerges an image of Pareto as a man whose ideas and work was only partially fulfilled. This original and sometimes unconventional book will be of great interest to economists, historians of economic thought and philosophers of the social sciences.

Book Vilfredo Pareto

Download or read book Vilfredo Pareto written by Alfonso de Pietri-Tonelli and published by Springer. This book was released on 1994-03-01 with total page 151 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the viewpoint of carrying out multi-disciplinary studies between economics and other social sciences, Pareto's theories are especially important as they are the core of contemporary orthodox economics. His sociology is constructed very differently from his economics. First the former deals with non-rational social behaviour of human beings, whilst the latter with rational behaviour; secondly, in the methodology the former is empirical and inductive, while the latter is logical and deductive. The present volume is a revamping of works by two authorities on Pareto. It combines Alfonso de Pietri-Tonelli's address to the Italian Association for Advancement of Science on the occasion of the tenth anniversary of Pareto's death with selected chapters of Vilfredo Pareto, sa vie et son oeuvre, Payot, Paris, 1928 by G.H. Bousquet.

Book Pareto on Policy

Download or read book Pareto on Policy written by Warren Samuels and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-07-05 with total page 260 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Warren Samuels interprets Vilfredo Pareto's Treatise on General Sociology in terms of a general equilibrium model of policy. Three themes and one conviction run throughout the study. The first is a model of policy making involving three sets of variables: power, knowledge, and psychology. The second is a general equilibrium approach to the study of these variables emphasizing their fundamental interdependence. The third is the importance of Pareto's work.Pareto is one of the few individuals whose work has had enormous influence in at least three social sciences in the twentieth century: economics, sociology, and political science. Despite Pareto's attempt in the Treatise to produce a general sociology encompassing all of these sciences (as well as psychology), his work has been treated almost completely from the perspectives of the individual disciplines. This volume's interpretation is consonant with Pareto's intention in the Treatise, namely, to provide a general equilibrium model of the total socio-politico-economic decision-making or policy process. The book is directed at those who comprehend these as processes whose structure, conduct, and performance are a function of complex decision making. Social scientists and policy analysts have moved beyond models that solve problems in the abstract, without working them out through policy making in the real world. The approach outlined here is important to those who are interested in pursuing the working rules of law and morals that govern the distribution and exercise of power as well as the exercise of power that governs the development of these rules.

Book Pareto and Political Economy as a Science

Download or read book Pareto and Political Economy as a Science written by Roberto Marchionatti and published by . This book was released on 1998 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It is argued that Schumpeter's widely accepted judgment that Pareto's work is "completely rooted in Walras's system" constitutes a misreading of Pareto. In fact, already during the period 1892-1900, Pareto traces the methodological outlines of an economic science profoundly different from that of Walras. It is maintained that his methodological contribution represents an attempt to define the conditions for political economy to be a science. In this context, Pareto examines the theoretical premises of economic theories and questions the hypotheses of perfect foresight and rationality. The ordinalist hypothesis is also shown to be a consequence of these methodological reflections.
