Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Parent's Poetical Anthology: Being a Selection of English Poems Primarily Designed to Assist in Forming the Taste and the Sentiments of Young Readers The occasion and objects of the following Selection of English Poems may be stated in few words. It was originally compiled for the use of the children of the Selector, who was desirous of putting into their hands a volume of poetry; which, at the same time that it should assist in forming their taste, might conduce to the infinitely more important purpose of storing their minds with religious and moral sentiments. After various inquiries, the result of which was that the Selector could not meet with any compilation exactly adapted to the proposed end, the present selection was planned, and for the most part executed more than a twelvemonth ago: and it is now offered to the public in compliance with a suggestion, that what was framed with such a design for the Selector's children, might be not unacceptable for the instruction of others. Book The Poet s Child

Download or read book The Poet s Child written by Michael Wiegers and published by . This book was released on 2002 with total page 168 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When a parent is poet, the child becomes a muse--often wondrous, sometimes terrifying. This anthology explores the vast emotional landscape of parenting, from the serenity of innocent naps to the howling anguish of early deaths. Here are poetic mothers and fathers (and children), across cultures both ancient and modern, trying to make sense--and art--from the sublime mystery and relentless grind of living with children. Never has there been a collection that so honestly speaks to the parents' perspective, where moments of tenderness--such as a father abandoning "the most divinely inspired poem" to feed his son--have their counterpoints: --a nursing mother-poet, who has not slept in 400 nights, going "gradually mad" or --a mother's realization that her daughter would "drive nails into my tongue" Remember those older friends we used to envy, brilliant and glittering with beauty, Who refused to have children, not about to sacrifice their careers; Who refused the mess, the entrapment, as we toiled over chores and homework, worried about measles and money-- Have you seen them lately? They no longer converse in sparkling cadenzas. They are obsessed with their little dog who piddles on the Oriental rug, who throws up on the bedspread... They way they caress him makes you fairly ill; the way they call him, "Baby." from "Children" by Carolyn Kizer Michael Wiegers is the managing editor at Copper Canyon Press. Book Adsit S Poetry Anthology Volume I

Download or read book Adsit S Poetry Anthology Volume I written by Tim L. Adsit and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2011-02-08 with total page 149 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Adsits Poetry Anthology, Volume I presents a collection of three generations of American poetry from the Adsit family, written by Tim Adsit, his parents, and his grandmother. This unique anthology contains inspirational poetry with recurring themes focusing on wilderness, the nature of man, family, home, love, life, death, faith, patriotism, country, humor, and emotions, as well as personal thoughts and reflections gained while outdoors hunting, hiking, camping, and fishing. With these inspiring thoughts and poetic images, the Adsit family brings us immediately into the beautiful world of nature and human nature. Relaxed, warmly intimate, and sometimes humorous, these verses reveal the inspiring world of nature that provides insight into what we are as human beings; what attitudes and beliefs we should take toward life, its Creator, death, and faith; and the way in which we should mature and develop daily in wisdom, knowledge, understanding, and humility. Each poet at once sees connections between the creatures and situations in nature, and in the opportunities in our own lives. They each have a genuine gift for discovering and presenting new ideas in refreshing ways showing that there is a stillness in nature that speaks louder than a choir of voices.
