Book Parasitic Protozoa of Farm Animals and Pets

Download or read book Parasitic Protozoa of Farm Animals and Pets written by Monica Florin-Christensen and published by Springer. This book was released on 2018-04-17 with total page 438 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides an in-depth yet concise overview of the most common and emerging protozoa that cause diseases in both farm animals and companion animals. As outlined in the concise introduction, pathogenic protozoans represent an evolutionary highly diverse and little understood group of disease-causing microorganisms. For each of the featured parasitic unicellular eukaryotes, it discusses the morphology, lifecycle, epidemiology and host-pathogen interactions. In addition, the book highlights the latest developments in diagnostic methods, as well as prevention and treatment strategies. Thorough information on genomes and genetic manipulation strategies for some of the protozoa covered in this book is also included. Infections involving parasitic protozoa can cause productivity losses and/or reduce the quality of life of infected animals. Some infections are zoonotic, posing an on-going public health threat. In most cases, prevention and treatment are either non-existent or need considerable improvement. On the other hand, a great deal of research has recently been conducted on these organisms, yielding valuable new information on their global distribution and revealing the mechanisms of host-pathogen interactions at the molecular level – and essential insights that can be used for the development of new control tools. This book includes extensive information on both basic aspects and recent scientific discoveries on these protozoa and thus constitutes a unique resource for students, veterinarians, and researchers alike.

Book Parasites and Parasitosis of the Domestic Animals

Download or read book Parasites and Parasitosis of the Domestic Animals written by Benjamin Mott Underhill and published by . This book was released on 1920 with total page 422 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First paragraph of Preface: In the preparation of this work the author has aimed to present clearly, concisely, and in orderly manner such matter pertaining to the subject at hand as seems most essential to the needs of the student and the practitioner. Notwithstanding its elementary character, the present rapid advances in parasitology have necessitated numerous changes and additions to the manuscript during its preparation. New species and unsettling facts and theories as to some which are not new are, in these days of intensive research, frequently being brought to light and reported upon. Some of these findings represent or lead to a distinct advance and, though the observations be in certain cases upon obscure and in themselves unimportant species, they may, by analogy, shed valuable light upon life histories and modes of infection of related forms known to be injurious to domestic animals and man. So frequent are these steps forward that it might almost seem better to leave comparative parsitology at the present time to the fragmental attention it has mainly received, and possibly it is to this view that the lack of a recent American volume upon the subject may be attributed. Be that as it may, this book is not intended to be comprehensive, and it contains but little discussion, historical or otherwise, of investigations in the field of medical zoology, -limitaions which may, in measure, contribute to it a longer period of usefulness in its present form than could be hoped for in an exhaustive treatise. With but few exceptions, the parasites considered are those most likely to be met with and as to which most of the facts pertaining to their biology and pathogenicity have been well established.

Book excerpt: A Handbook of Veterinary Parasitology was first published in 1978.Practitioners, teachers, and students of veterinary medicine and animal technicians will find this handbook extremely useful in their work. It provides a quick and easy reference for the identification and control of parasites and parasitic disease in the domestic animals of North America. The information given about each parasite includes habitat, distribution, life cycle, transmission, signs and pathogenicity, and control. Some of the commonly used laboratory techniques and diagnostic procedures are outlined, a host-parasite listing is provided, and there is additional information in the appendix about some of the parasiticides and chemotherapeutic agents which are mentioned in the text.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Animal Parasites: And Parasitic Diseases In my twelve years' experience in teaching parasitology, I have felt the want of a concise text-book incorporating the names of the common parasites of the domestic animals, and it is with this in mind that I now dedicate this work to the student and to the busy practitioner. The work is divided into four chapters, treating of the following subjects, viz.: External Parasites, Internal Parasites, Protozoa, Preparation of Specimens. The names of the parasites are arranged in tabular form at the beginning of each of the first three chapters. In the first column of the table will be found the Branch; in the second the Class; in the third the Order; in the fourth the Family and in the last the Genus and Species, names by which we know the parasites. By reference to this table one can trace each species at a glance down through the classification to the starting point, - the Branch. Each parasite is dealt with in the order of the tabulation. Download or read book Veterinary Parasitology written by James Armour and published by Wiley-Blackwell. This book was released on 1996-09-27 with total page 307 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is intended for veterinary students studying parasitology, practising veterinary surgeons, and those in animal science who require information on all aspects of parasitic disease in domestic animals. The text is comprehensive, covering both temperate and tropical zones, and deals with all three aspects of parasitology - helminthology, entomology and protozoology - as well as some blood-borne rickettsial infections traditionally taught in the subject. There are also chapters dedicated to reviews of epidemiology, immunity, anthelmintics, ectoparasiticides and laboratory diagnosis. Because the text is intended for those directly involved in the diagnosis, treatment, and control of parasitic infections of domestic animals, diseases which are common or important are treated in some detail, the less important being discussed more briefly. For the same reason, details of classification and taxonomy have been kept to the minimum necessary to indicate the relationships between the various species and to facilitate their identification.

Book excerpt: Although immunological and molecular techniques are increasingly being applied for the diagnosis of parasitic diseases, veterinary practitioners worldwide still rely primarily on the conventional faecal and blood smear examinations mainly on the concept of "seeing is believing". These techniques are still the gold standard and cost-effective means of diagnosing the parasitic infections in domestic animals.
