Book Risk Based Waste Classification in California

Download or read book Risk Based Waste Classification in California written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 1999-07-14 with total page 235 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Department of Toxic Substances Control (DTSC) of the State of California Environmental Protection Agency is in the process of complying with the Regulatory Structure Update. The Regulatory Structure Update is a comprehensive review and refocusing of California's system for identifying and regulating management of hazardous wastes. As part of this effort, the DTSC proposes to change its current waste classification system that categorizes wastes as hazardous or nonhazardous based on their toxicity. Under the proposed system there would be two risk-based thresholds rather than the single toxicity threshold currently used to distinguish between the wastes. Wastes that contain specific chemicals at concentrations that exceed the upper threshold will be designated as hazardous; those below the lower threshold will be nonhazardous; and those with chemical concentrations between the two thresholds will be "special" wastes and subject to variances for management and disposal. The proposed DTSC system combines toxicity information with short or long-term exposure information to determine the risks associated with the chemicals. Under section 57004 of the California Health and Safety Code, the scientific basis of the proposed waste classification system is subject to external scientific peer review by the National Academy of Sciences, the University of California, or other similar institution of higher learning or group of scientists. This report addresses that regulatory requirement.

Book Prudent Practices in the Laboratory

Download or read book Prudent Practices in the Laboratory written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2011-03-25 with total page 360 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Prudent Practices in the Laboratory-the book that has served for decades as the standard for chemical laboratory safety practice-now features updates and new topics. This revised edition has an expanded chapter on chemical management and delves into new areas, such as nanotechnology, laboratory security, and emergency planning. Developed by experts from academia and industry, with specialties in such areas as chemical sciences, pollution prevention, and laboratory safety, Prudent Practices in the Laboratory provides guidance on planning procedures for the handling, storage, and disposal of chemicals. The book offers prudent practices designed to promote safety and includes practical information on assessing hazards, managing chemicals, disposing of wastes, and more. Prudent Practices in the Laboratory will continue to serve as the leading source of chemical safety guidelines for people working with laboratory chemicals: research chemists, technicians, safety officers, educators, and students.

Book Description and Sampling of Contaminated Soils

Download or read book Description and Sampling of Contaminated Soils written by J. Russell Boulding and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-09-29 with total page 239 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This second edition of EPA's bestselling book, Description and Sampling of Contaminated Soils: A Field Guide, Second Edition, has been revised and significantly expanded over the original edition. An ideal reference for anyone involved in site investigations, this guide describes how to determine the amount and extent of soil contamination and potential for movement of contaminants in the soil and groundwater. It contains checklists, tables, and step-by-step descriptions of methods and procedures for: Cost-effective, detailed site investigations for evaluating the potential for contaminant transport Field collection of information on soil engineering properties required for remediation selection and design This guide also features an adaptation of soil description procedures used by the U.S. Soil Conservation Service (SCS) for investigating contaminated sites. The SCS soil description and classification procedures, when used in combination with the Unified Soil Classification System currently used by geologists and engineers, greatly improves contaminated site assessments.

Book A Guide for Site and Soil Description in Hazardous Waste Site Characterization

Download or read book A Guide for Site and Soil Description in Hazardous Waste Site Characterization written by RE. Cameron and published by . This book was released on 1992 with total page 15 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A guide has been prepared to assist field personnel to identify, describe, sample, and interpret site and soil characteristics of hazardous waste sites where metal contamination is suspected or known. It is directed to on-scene coordinators, project managers, work teams, and others who may need to apply the basic principles of soil science without formal training. It meets the need of the United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) for standard procedures, guidelines, or protocols that address soil and site contamination with metal and metalloid species. Thirty-five "knowledge frames" are provided for commonly encountered site and soil characteristics, each of which contains specific guidance for the description of a parameter. The format of the knowledge frames is compatible with the Environmental Sample Expert system (ESES) software under development by Lockheed Engineering & Sciences Company for EPA EMSL-LV. The guide is also designed for use with an accompanying field pocket guide, which provides methods for site and soil description and analysis.

This book was released on 1997-10-31 with total page 334 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Site Characterization Sampling and Analysis HMTRI Site Characterization: Sampling and Analysis is an introductory environmental sampling textbook intended for use in community/technical college environmental technology curricula or in industrial training programs. Comprehension of the subject matter is enhanced by associated coursework in chemistry, biology, environmental regulations, and college-level mathematics. The goal of the present textbook is to provide the environmental technician with the knowledge and skills necessary to assist a site characterization project planner in the sampling and monitoring process. Among the tasks the students will learn how to perform are: * assisting the research of a site's background for data that a project manager will use in the development of a site sampling plan * meeting representative sampling objectives and quality control/quality assurance objectives * preparing to go onsite for a sampling event * monitoring a site for potentially hazardous atmospheres * following the sampling plan in collecting samples from various media (e.g., soil, surface water, ground water, and containers) * troubleshooting under unforeseen circumstances * preparing samples for transport to the laboratory * documenting field activities * communicating with laboratory personnel * interpreting lab reports, including the validation of quality control data The text contains photographs and line drawings to help students visualize equipment and processes. Included are instructional aids such as chapter objectives, concept statements before major sections, review questions (as well as application and critical thinking activities) after each section, and a glossary of the terminology.
