  • Pages : 0 pages

Download or read book Budgerigar As Pet written by Albert Melan and published by Independently Published. This book was released on 2022-10-12 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The budgerigar, often known as the parakeet, is one of the tiniest kinds of parrot that is widely kept as a pet. They are also one of the most popular birds kept as pets all over the globe, and one of the reasons for this is that they are quite inexpensive. These little parrots are very sociable and straightforward to domesticate. The beginning and the history The budgie and many other species of parakeets originated in Australia, where they may still be seen roaming the plains in large groups. These wild species, on the other hand, come in at a somewhat reduced size in comparison to the birds that are often available for purchase at pet shops. These birds have been bred in captivity for many years. Around the year 1840, the English scientist John Gould brought the budgie to Europe. Once there, the budgie immediately became a popular choice for keeping as a pet. By 1894, Australia had instituted a restriction on the export of budgies, which led to a flourishing breeding industry in Europe. The bird finally arrived in the United States around the year 1920, but it didn't start gaining widespread popularity until the 1950s. The American budgie, sometimes known as the parakeet, and the English budgie are the two varieties of budgies that are most commonly seen in the pet trade. The American variety is the one that can be found in pet shops the most often, whilst the bigger English budgie is the one that is most frequently seen at expositions and exhibits.

Book Parakeets And Budgies Raising Feeding And Hand Training Your Keet

Download or read book Parakeets And Budgies Raising Feeding And Hand Training Your Keet written by Lisa Shea and published by Lisa Shea. This book was released on with total page 262 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: I have owned parakeets (also called budgies or keets) since I was a tiny toddler. I have photos of my pregnant-with-me-mom's parakeet (named Gandalf), so she owned parakeets even before I was born. Sometimes I've had four parakeets, sometimes just one, but in one way or another parakeets manage to wiggle their fluffy ways into my heart. This book is a compilation of my years of experience, not only with my own parakeets, but also with helping the tens of thousands of parakeet-loving visitors who come to my parakeet forum. Between the group of us we've probably experienced everything there is that could happen to a keet, good or bad. There is information on choosing a parakeet, feeding a parakeet, and full step by step instructions on hand training your parakeet. You can learn about parakeet activities, parakeet toys, and parakeet socialization. While the web is of course an awesome resource, often there are times that it's simply easier to read an organized, sequential set of instructions on an e-reader. Also, it seems that web access goes down during emergency situations! Having an ebook version of those "what to do" instructions available on your e-reader has saved many a keet owner. Think of it as part of your emergency care kit for your beloved pet. If you have any questions, always feel free to email me! I'm happy to lend a hand with keets. Enjoy!

Book Thinking Like a Parrot

    Book Details:
  • Author : Alan Bond
  • Publisher : University of Chicago Press
  • Release : 2019-07-02
  • ISBN : 022624878X
  • Pages : 298 pages

Download or read book Thinking Like a Parrot written by Alan Bond and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2019-07-02 with total page 298 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: People form enduring emotional bonds with other animal species, such as dogs, cats, and horses. For the most part, these are domesticated animals, with one notable exception: many people form close and supportive relationships with parrots, even though these amusing and curious birds remain thoroughly wild creatures. What enables this unique group of animals to form social bonds with people, and what does this mean for their survival? In Thinking like a Parrot, Alan B. Bond and Judy Diamond look beyond much of the standard work on captive parrots to the mischievous, inquisitive, and astonishingly vocal parrots of the wild. Focusing on the psychology and ecology of wild parrots, Bond and Diamond document their distinctive social behavior, sophisticated cognition, and extraordinary vocal abilities. Also included are short vignettes—field notes on the natural history and behavior of both rare and widely distributed species, from the neotropical crimson-fronted parakeet to New Zealand’s flightless, ground-dwelling kākāpō. This composite approach makes clear that the behavior of captive parrots is grounded in the birds’ wild ecology and evolution, revealing that parrots’ ability to bond with people is an evolutionary accident, a by-product of the intense sociality and flexible behavior that characterize their lives. Despite their adaptability and intelligence, however, nearly all large parrot species are rare, threatened, or endangered. To successfully manage and restore these wild populations, Bond and Diamond argue, we must develop a fuller understanding of their biology and the complex set of ecological and behavioral traits that has led to their vulnerability. Spanning the global distribution of parrot species, Thinking like a Parrot is rich with surprising insights into parrot intelligence, flexibility, and—even in the face of threats—resilience.
