Book Brief Instructions Upon My Paradoxes of Defence

Download or read book Brief Instructions Upon My Paradoxes of Defence written by George Silver and published by Lulu.com. This book was released on 2014-12-10 with total page 136 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: George Silver's 'Brief Instructions Upon My Paradoxes of Defence' is considered one of the foremost works in the Western martial arts canon. Conceived as a companion piece to his treatise 'Paradoxes of Defence' (1599); what is so remarkable is that from the start Silver explicitly sets out the theory and mechanics which underpin the Nobel Science of Defence. These principles are then illustrated through techniques for a wide range of weapons, including chapters on short sword, off hand grappling, sword and dagger, sword and buckler, two hand sword, staff, forest bill, pike and dagger fighting. This Scholler's Edition has been designed with the new student in mind and accessibility as its primary concern. Silver's language remains unaltered, but the spelling has been modernised and the work presented with a clear, contemporary layout accompanied by copious footnotes and supplementary material drawn from 'Paradoxes of Defence'. The pocket-sized format makes this volume an invaluable training companion.

N 1599 a certain George Silver published a work entitled "Paradoxes of Defence, wherein is proved the trve grounds of Fight to be in the short auncient weapons, and that the short Sword hath aduantage of the long Sword or long Rapier. And the weakenesse and imperfection of the Rapier-fights displayed. Together with an Admonition to the noble, ancient, victorious, valiant, and most braue nation of Englishmen, to beware of false teachers of Defence, and how they forsake their owne naturall fights: with a briefe commendation of the noble science or exercising of Armes. By George Siluer Gentleman. This book is a small 4to volume ofviii and 72 pages, containing three woodcuts-- a work but little known to any save antiquaries and collectors; yet for all that it is a work which must have possessed considerable value at the time it was written, when duelling and brawling were matters of everyday occurrence. It was in all probability very shortly afterwards that George Silver wrote "Bref Instructions vpo my pradoxes of Defence for the true handlyng of all Mannr of weapons together wl the sower grownds & the sower gou'nors wch gouernours are left out in my pradoxes wlout the knowledge of wch no Man can fight saf." This, as its title indicates, bears very materially upon the earlier work; so much so

Book Master of Defence

Download or read book Master of Defence written by Paul Wagner and published by . This book was released on 2003 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: George Silver's Paradoxes of Defence (1599) and Brief Instructions upon my Paradoxes of Defence (ca. 1605) are probably the most important works ever written on the Western martial tradition. Silver straddles the medieval and Renaissance worlds, summing up the collective experience of centuries of European warcraft, while presenting a fighting style that ensures victory in the urban battlefield of single combat, street brawls and honorable duels. Silver presents a complete integrated fencing system applicable to a wide variety of weapons, but more importantly provides a theoretical framework of universal principles by which to judge any technique, theory or strategy. He teaches how to identify the flaws of any enemy's fighting style, exploit his weaknesses and overcome him while remaining secure and safe, using the traditional "True Fight" of the English knightly class. In addition to presenting Silver's original works, author Paul Wagner and other scholars examine Silver's contributions, putting the Master and his legacy in context. Master of Defence is a necessity for any student of Western fencing or swordsmanship, Western or Asian martial arts, Shakespearean or Renaissance studies, English military history, medieval re-enactment or professional fight choreography. photos and illustrations

Book English Swordsmanship

Download or read book English Swordsmanship written by Stephen Hand and published by . This book was released on 2010-01-01 with total page 239 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One of the most important teachers of historical swordsmanship, Stephen Hand has delivered what may well be his Magnum Opus, a detailed study in text and photographs of his best form, the swordsmanship of the 16th century English swordmaster, George Silver. In nearly 800 photographs, Mr. Hand explores the depth of Silver's technique, presenting for the student a clear and concise path to fighting with the single-handed sword. These techniques are from the same period as William Shakespeare, and it is even supposed that Silver had something to do with the staging of swordsmanship in Shakespeare's plays. So these techniques should have special interest to those involved in swordplay on the stage. Students of fencing history, members of the SCA, LARPS, or students of Renaissance history will also find this first-ever exploration of Silver's amazingly effective techniques surpremely valuable.

Book Poverty Narratives and Power Paradoxes in International Trade Negotiations and Beyond

Download or read book Poverty Narratives and Power Paradoxes in International Trade Negotiations and Beyond written by Amrita Narlikar and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2020-05-07 with total page 223 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this work, Amrita Narlikar argues that, contrary to common assumption, modern-day politics displays a surprising paradox: poverty - and the powerlessness with which it is associated - has emerged as a political tool and a formidable weapon in international negotiation. The success of poverty narratives, however, means that their use has not been limited to the neediest. Focusing on behaviours and outcomes in a particularly polarising area of bargaining - international trade - and illustrating wider applications of the argument, Narlikar shows how these narratives have been effectively used. Yet, she also sheds light on how indiscriminate overuse and misuse increasingly run the risk of adverse consequences for the system at large, and devastating repercussions for the weakest members of society. Narlikar advances a theory of agency and empowerment by focusing on the life-cycles of narratives, and concludes by offering policy-relevant insights on how to construct winning and sustainable narratives.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: World War III has yet to happen, and yet material evidence of this conflict is strewn everywhere: resting at the bottom of the ocean, rusting in deserts, and floating in near-Earth orbit. In Military Waste, Joshua O. Reno offers a unique analysis of the costs of American war preparation through an examination of the lives and stories of American civilians confronted with what is left over and cast aside when a society is permanently ready for war. Using ethnographic and archival research, Reno demonstrates how obsolete military junk in its various incarnations affects people and places far from the battlegrounds that are ordinarily associated with warfare. Using a broad swath of examples—from excess planes, ships, and space debris that fall into civilian hands, to the dispossessed and polluted island territories once occupied by military bases, to the militarized masculinities of mass shooters—Military Waste reveals the unexpected and open-ended relationships that non-combatants on the home front form with a nation permanently ready for war.
