Et, partout, la mobilité et la précarité progressent. Parce que ces mutations concernent tous les citoyens, parce qu'elles questionnent en profondeur l'action syndicale, la Confédération française démocratique du travail (CFDT) à voulu faire le point sur la façon dont les salariés perçoivent le nouveau travail, leur travail. Elle a lancé dans ce but, en 1995, une gigantesque enquête, intitulée " Travail en questions ", menée par ses militants dans les entreprises. Pendant plus de cinq ans, les syndicalistes se sont transformés en enquêteurs sociaux, se mettant à l'écoute et développant ainsi de nouvelles pratiques syndicales : 35 enquêtes sectorielles ont été conduites dans les branches professionnelles et auprès de certaines professions, 50 000 salariés ont répondu aux questions. C'est une synthèse, de ces enquêtes qui est présentée dans ce livre exceptionnel, mobilisant une richesse de connaissances jamais égalée en France. Elles permettent de mieux comprendre les causes et les effets de l'intensification du travail, source de nouvelle pénibilité, de cerner les attentes à l'égard du management des entreprises, de faire un premier bilan de ce qu'a changé la réduction du temps de travail. Et aussi de connaître la façon dont est vécue aujourd'hui la " valeur " travail, obligation ou moyen de se réaliser. Les constats proposés sont variés, tant les situations, les individus sont divers. It shows that depoliticization sustains IO everyday activities while allowing them to remain engaged in politics, even when they pretend not to. Delving into the inner dynamics of global governance, this book develops an analytical framework on why IOs "hate" politics by bringing together practices and logics of depoliticization in a wide variety of historical, geographic and organizational contexts. With multiple case studies in the fields of labor rights and economic regulation, environmental protection, development and humanitarian aid, peacekeeping, among others this book shows that depoliticization is enacted in a series of overlapping, sometimes mundane, practices resulting from the complex interaction between professional habits, organizational cultures and individual tactics. By approaching the consequences of these practices in terms of logics, the book addresses the instrumental dimension of depoliticization without assuming that IO actors necessarily intend to depoliticize their action or global problems. For IO scholars and students, this book sheds new light on IO politics by clarifying one often taken-for-granted dimension of their everyday activities, precisely that of depoliticization. Book excerpt: In the late 1950s, like tens of thousands of young men of his generation, Pierre Bourdieu, having recently passed the agrégation in philosophy, found himself immersed in the Algerian war. Motivated by an impulse that, as he himself says, ‘was civic rather than political’, nothing seemed more important to him than to understand the Algerian situation and provide the elements that would enable others to come to an informed judgement about it. In extremely tough conditions and along with a small group of students, Bourdieu undertook a series of studies across an Algeria that was tightly patrolled by the army, leading him to discover the shocking reality of the resettlement camps and to analyse the mechanisms of destruction of Algerian society of which they were emblematic. To achieve the objectives he had set himself, Bourdieu had to carry out a genuine intellectual conversion, acquiring an ethnographic understanding of Algerian society, learning sociological analysis at a breakneck pace and inventing new instruments - both theoretical and empirical - that would enable him to understand the relations of domination specific to colonialism. These new tools also enabled him to analyse the nature of the crisis that the war had both produced and manifested. This unique volume brings together the first texts written by Bourdieu in the midst of the Algerian conflict, as well as later writings and interviews in which he returns to the topic of Algeria and the decisive role it played in the development of his work.
