In August, 1995, the Fifth Workshop on Representation Theory of Lie Groups and its Applications took place at the Universidad Nacional de Cordoba in Argentina. Organized by Joseph Wolf, Nolan Wallach, Roberto Miatello, Juan Tirao, and Jorge Vargas, the workshop offered expository courses on current research, and individual lectures on more specialized topics. The present vol ume reflects the dual character of the workshop. Many of the articles will be accessible to graduate students and others entering the field. Here is a rough outline of the mathematical content. (The editors beg the indulgence of the readers for any lapses in this preface in the high standards of historical and mathematical accuracy that were imposed on the authors of the articles. ) Connections between flag varieties and representation theory for real re ductive groups have been studied for almost fifty years, from the work of Gelfand and Naimark on principal series representations to that of Beilinson and Bernstein on localization. The article of Wolf provides a detailed introduc tion to the analytic side of these developments. He describes the construction of standard tempered representations in terms of square-integrable partially harmonic forms (on certain real group orbits on a flag variety), and outlines the ingredients in the Plancherel formula. Finally, he describes recent work on the complex geometry of real group orbits on partial flag varieties.

Though published more than 20 years ago, these papers made fundamental contributions that deserve much broader exposure. In addition, the subsequent literature that has subsumed these papers cannot replace the originality and vitality they contain. The editors have provided a brief introduction to each paper, as well as a synopsis of the major developments which have occurred in the area covered by each paper. Included here are the doctoral theses of Arthur, Osborne, and Schmid. Arthur's thesis is closely related to Trombi's paper insofar as both deal with harmonic analysis on real semisimple Lie groups, and, in particular, analysis on the Schwartz space of Harish-Chandra. Arthur's thesis is concerned with the image under the Fourier transform of the Schwartz space of a semisimple Lie group of real rank one, while Trombi's paper provides an expository account of the harmonic analysis associated to the decomposition of the Schwartz space under the regular representation. In his thesis, Osborne extends the Atiyah-Bott fixed point theorem for elliptic complexes to obtain a fixed point formula for complexes that are not elliptic. Schmid proves a generalization of the Borel-Weil theorem concerning an explicit and geometric realization of the irreducible representations of a compact, connected semisimple Lie group. Langlands's fundamental paper provides a classification of irreducible, admissible representations of real reductive Lie groups.

The author uses the analysis of these subspaces as one of the basic tools in his study of such representations. The author has made a deliberate effort to keep the exposition reasonably self-contained and hopes that this will be of some benefit to the reader.

The representation theory for compact, locally compact Abelian, and Lie groups is co vered in graduate courses, concentrated around functional analysis. The author of the present boo~ has lectured for many years on functional analysis at Khar'kov University. He subsequently con tinued these lectures in the form of a graduate course on the theory of group representations, in which special attention was devoted to a retrospective exposition of operator theory and harmo nic analysis of functions from the standpoint of representation theory. In this approach it was natural to consider not only uni tary, but also Banach representations, and not only representations of groups, but also of semigroups.

Building on his discovery of perfectoid spaces, Scholze introduced the concept of “diamonds,” which are to perfectoid spaces what algebraic spaces are to schemes. The introduction of diamonds, along with the development of a mixed-characteristic shtuka, set the stage for a critical advance in the discipline. In this book, Peter Scholze and Jared Weinstein show that the moduli space of mixed-characteristic shtukas is a diamond, raising the possibility of using the cohomology of such spaces to attack the Langlands conjectures for a reductive group over a p-adic field. This book follows the informal style of the original Berkeley lectures, with one chapter per lecture. It explores p-adic and perfectoid spaces before laying out the newer theory of shtukas and their moduli spaces. Book excerpt: The authors consider a curve of Fredholm pairs of Lagrangian subspaces in a fixed Banach space with continuously varying weak symplectic structures. Assuming vanishing index, they obtain intrinsically a continuously varying splitting of the total Banach space into pairs of symplectic subspaces. Using such decompositions the authors define the Maslov index of the curve by symplectic reduction to the classical finite-dimensional case. The authors prove the transitivity of repeated symplectic reductions and obtain the invariance of the Maslov index under symplectic reduction while recovering all the standard properties of the Maslov index. As an application, the authors consider curves of elliptic operators which have varying principal symbol, varying maximal domain and are not necessarily of Dirac type. For this class of operator curves, the authors derive a desuspension spectral flow formula for varying well-posed boundary conditions on manifolds with boundary and obtain the splitting formula of the spectral flow on partitioned manifolds.
