Book excerpt: About the Book This book came out of a desire to make sense of certain concepts of the gospel by relating them to ideas that one can readily perceive in everyday life experiences. It deals with certain concepts of the gospel that find their imperfect parallels in social, political and historical events and ideas. Even though these ideas may not perfectly or wholly represent the teachings of scripture which the author uses them to explain they surely lead the reader on to a simple understanding of these themes of the gospel. This is following after the example of Jesus who employed parables in order to pass His message across to the people. The purpose of the book is that the reader may come away with the thought that truly, the Gospel is not strange.

Some of the answers you find will be surprising, in part because Jesus was a more sophisticated economist than he is given credit for. His words will shed light on many modern economic problems and decisions we may not think to go to the Bible about. By taking this journey through the economic parables, your response to finances and the global marketplace will be enriched from a balanced biblical approach. Download or read book Living Parables written by Mark G. Boyer and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2020-12-04 with total page 134 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Living Parables: Today’s Versions presents parables in updated language and images. Biblical parables are culture-bound; they are embedded in images that were well-known to a Jewish culture. Jesus was a first-century, Jewish, Galilean peasant, and his concerns, speech, and idioms belong to that culture. His milieu is far removed from ours today. The images found in parables carried meaning that is lost on modern audiences. A simple example will suffice. In the Jewish world of the first century, leaven was considered to be corrupt because people did not understand how bacteria worked. On the most important day of the year—Passover—bread had to be unleavened, uncorrupted. Today, no one thinks of yeast in that way. If we want bread dough to rise, we need to leaven it. Therefore, what image might Jesus use today that carries some of the same cultural connotations that yeast or leaven carried in his world? Might he speak about Ebola virus or radioactivity? Those images carry the same negativity that yeast or leaven bore in his world. This book contains parables found in the New Testament in a form that Jesus might tell today.

Book Parables of a 21st Century Shepherd and Other Farm Stories

Download or read book Parables of a 21st Century Shepherd and Other Farm Stories written by Dale Hetherington and published by Christian Faith Publishing, Inc.. This book was released on 2023-08-08 with total page 89 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Genesis 46, Jacob calls God his shepherd as he blesses Joseph’s sons Manasseh and Ephraim. In the beloved Psalm 23, David sings about what it means that the Lord is his shepherd. In Isaiah 40, God promises to come to His people and tend to them like a shepherd. In John 10, Jesus says He is the Good Shepherd. In Hebrews 13, He is called the Great Shepherd. In 1 Peter 5, He is the Chief Shepherd. This is only a sample of places in the Bible where God’s relationship with His people is equated with that of a shepherd to His sheep. I became a pastor shortly after we started raising sheep, and I began seeing similarities between being a pastor and a shepherd. This makes sense since pastor comes from the Greek word poimen, which means shepherd. Jesus taught in parables, earthly stories with a spiritual meaning. That’s the idea behind this little book. I wrote stories about our dealings with our sheep that illustrate similarities I saw between my relationship with my sheep and my relationship with the people I shepherded in the church. I hope that these stories will entertain you and also give you insight as well. For pastors, maybe it will even help you in your ministry. Being aware of this has helped me in mine.

Download or read book Discovering the Parables written by Henry G. Covert and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 2007-12-30 with total page 161 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Long before there were printing presses, copy machines, and email, societies used storytelling to convey beliefs, history, and traditions. This practice preceded the ministry of Jesus and continues today in many cultures. But Jesus was a master of storytelling. His words provide many with guidelines and a road map for living. Using familiar imagery found in nature and other recognizable sources, he engaged his listeners with lessons that confronted every aspect of their lives, providing the tools for self-examination and change. Speaking in parables, however, sometimes caused confusion for his listeners, and readers today may wonder what exactly he meant, and how his words apply to everyday life. This book looks at each of Jesus's parables, explaining the key points, the central themes, and the meanings we can take away from the stories. By considering each parable in depth, the author helps readers come to a better understanding of the teachings of Jesus and what they mean for our lives.

The enigmatic Boo Radley as an allegorical representation of God, “the divine, mysterious neighbor” who watches over, protects, and longs to know his children personally. The hero, Atticus Finch, as a model of faith, integrity, and even parenting. The main character, Scout Finch, and what she might teach us about the role of women in church and society. The Mockingbird Parables compels us to ask the often-ignored questions: Do we truly love our neighbors? Are we building community? Are we influencing society for the better? By illuminating the parallels between Christian faith and Lee’s masterpiece, The Mockingbird Parables reaffirms the magnitude of a novel perhaps more relevant today than ever before.
