Book Para Bhakti or Supreme Devotion

Download or read book Para Bhakti or Supreme Devotion written by SWAMI VIVEKANANDA and published by Prabhat Prakashan. This book was released on 2021-01-01 with total page 32 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Vivekananda was a man with a great spiritual presence and tremendous intellect who was a tireless teacher and writer. He wrote poems and hymns in Bengali, English and Sanskrit, some of which are sung daily in Vedanta centre's worldwide. He was ahead of his time in encouraging women and Westerners to not only practice Vedanta, but to be leaders. Two examples are Sara Ellen Waldo who recorded and collected Swami's talks at Thousand Island Park and Margaret Noble, later known as Sister Nvidia, who devoted her life not only to Vedanta but also to the education of Indian girls.Supreme Devotion, in which forms and symbols fall off. One who has reached that cannot belong to any sect, for all sects are in him. To what shall he belong? For all churches and temples are in him. Where is the church big enough for him? Such a man cannot bind himself down to certain limited forms. Where is the limit for unlimited love, with which he has become one? In all religions which take up this ideal of love, we find the struggle to express it. Although we understand what this love means and see that everything in this world of affections and attractions is a manifestation of that Infinite Love, the expression of which has been attempted by sages and saints of different nations, yet we find them using all the powers of language, transfiguring even the most carnal expression into the divine.

Book Eastern Light in Western Eyes

Download or read book Eastern Light in Western Eyes written by Marty Glass and published by Sophia Perennis. This book was released on 2005-03 with total page 290 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Marty Glass lives with his wife Carol beyond the power and water lines in Humboldt County, California, relying on his 1965 pick-up truck "Old Brown" to take him the final two miles up a dirt road to his owner-built home. He has worked as a college English instructor, wharehouseman, and janitor. A devoted father of five children, loving husband and neighbor, he now teaches sixth grade in a rural elementary school, and plays jazz piano and cards. For the past thirty years, he has seriously practiced the religion of India, spending the long necessary hours meditating in "Marty's Cell," an old chicken coop reborn as an austere shrine. His spiritual practice is his real life. Marty's acclaimed book Yuga: An Anatomy of our Fate, was published by Sophia Perennis in 2001. He now gives us perhaps his most beautiful and thoughtful gift, reminding us that the world is woven of the infinite Love and Joy that is God, and showing us how, inspired by the Hindu tradition, that Love and Joy can be directly experienced as the heart of the universe and the heart of our hearts. We have it from Frithjof Schuon (The Transcendent Unity of Religions) and many others that the Vedanta appears among explicit doctrines as one of the most direct formulations possible of what makes the very essence of our spiritual reality. The work in hand can be read as a book-length unpacking of that accurate description. Reliable from beginning to end, it is distinctive among the innumerable renditions of the Vedanta in two ways. First, because its author is an accomplished wordsmith, he makes the Vedanta's profundities-which delve as deep as those of any philosophical theology-read like an open book; and second, because he has worked for thirty years to shape his life by those profundities, his vivid accounts of what he experienced along the way make his words jump off the page into the reader's heart. The book is inspiring. Huston Smith, author of Why Religion Matters, The World's Religions, etc.

Book Philosophy and Theistic Mysticism of the l v rs

This book was released on 1997 with total page 296 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Buddhist monk Upagupta, who preached and taught meditative practices in Northwest India over two thousand years ago, is venerated today by the laity in parts of Burma, Thailand, and laos as a proctective figure endowed with magical powers. The author demonstrates a remarkable continuity among traditions focused on Upagupta in ancient Sarvastivadin Sanskrit materials, key Pali texts, medieval Thai and Burmese texts, and rituals in Southeast Asia. In so doing he reflects the orientation of popular Sanskrit Hinayana Buddhism, which allows for new perspectives on such classic questions as the nature of enlightnment, the evil, the worship of the Buddha image, the veneration of saints, master-disciple relationships, the treatment of heterodoxy, and the relation of myth and ritual.

In the second part of the book the fundamental philosophical theories of Visistadvaita Vedanta are presented to prove that Vaisnavism is not a mere religious cult, but has a credible philosophic foundation.

Book Swami Vivekananda and Non Hindu Traditions

Download or read book Swami Vivekananda and Non Hindu Traditions written by Stephen E. Gregg and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2019-03-15 with total page 276 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Hindu thinker Swami Vivekananda (1863-1902) was and remains an important figure both within India, and in the West, where he was notable for preaching Vedanta. Scholarship surrounding Vivekananda is dominated by hagiography and his (mis)appropriation by the political Hindu Right. This work demonstrates that Vivekananda was no simplistic pluralist, as portrayed in hagiographical texts, nor narrow exclusivist, as portrayed by some modern Hindu nationalists, but a thoughtful, complex inclusivist. The book shows that Vivekananda formulated a hierarchical and inclusivistic framework of Hinduism, based upon his interpretations of a four-fold system of Yoga. It goes on to argue that Vivekananda understood his formulation of Vedanta to be universal, and applied it freely to non-Hindu traditions, and in so doing, demonstrates that Vivekananda was consistently critical of ‘low level’ spirituality, not only in non-Hindu traditions, but also within Hinduism. Demonstrating that Vivekananda is best understood within the context of ‘Advaitic primacy’, rather than ‘Hindu chauvinism’, this book will be of interest to scholars of Hinduism and South Asian religion and of South Asian diaspora communities and religious studies more generally.
