Download or read book Janet Frame in Focus written by Josephine A. McQuail and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2018-01-26 with total page 209 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: New Zealand author Janet Frame (1924-2004) during her lifetime published 11 novels, three collections of short stories, a volume of poetry and a children's book. The details of her life--her tragic early years, her confinement in a psychiatric hospital and her miraculous reprieve--overshadow her work and she remains largely neglected by scholars. These essays focus on Frame's autobiography, short stories and novels. Contributors from around the world explore a range of topics, including her mother's Christadelphian faith, her relationships with two 20th century icons (William Theophilus Brown and John Money), and a view of Frame in the context of trauma studies. Two of the essays were presented at the 2014 Northeast Modern Language Association convention.
Download or read book Last Letters written by Sylvie Crinquand and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2009-03-26 with total page 160 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This collection of essays is devoted to last letters : letters sent – or not – to sever a relationship, to mark the end of a phase in one’s life, or letters written by people about to be executed or commit suicide just before their deaths. Conversely, some of the letters analysed are fictional, and still other forms of texts, such as poems, are considered ultimate messages by the authors of the articles. By focussing on various forms of last letters, the contributors aim to define the influence of the epistolary context on endings and to provide an original approach to closure.

Book excerpt: Something happened in the 1990s; a group of people who were perceived as radical and unmentionable were transformed into a group of people who deserved human rights, and, if you looked close enough, were normal, just like everybody else (John DOCOEmilio (2002). Had a post-gay era (Ghaziani, 2011) begun? And if so, how might this impact on the meaning of sexual identity and a political movement steeped in identity politics? Have the LGBT youth of today been duped into conformity because..."

Download or read book Queer Exoticism written by Judith S. Kaufman and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2020-06-01 with total page 215 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Queer Exoticism: Examining the Queer Exotic Within joins the growing bibliography of queer postcolonial and queer race studies. The authors assembled here examine the queer tendency to visit decidedly different and unusual subjects of desire in an effort, partially at least, to find oneself. The identity quest that is inherent in the search for the exotic often results in something quite the opposite of foreign since it forms and articulates that which is ourselves. Thus experiencing the exotic becomes a path to self-knowledge, not unlike the work of therapy wherein the examination of elements that appear at first peculiar or unfamiliar end up opening channels to self-discovery. In this way, the gaze outward turns inward to exhibit an inner exoticism that, at times, is at once, always and already, inner and outer. These essays also focus on various questions of imperialism, race, exoticism, along with other aspects of the exotic. Going beyond Said’s sense of orientalism, this volume examines the otherness of oneself and the notion of desire for the Other as something different from purely an act of domination and colonization, thereby refusing perceptions of ascendancy. Insomuch as they represent various geographic and cultural groups, the studies lend themselves to a variety of different methodologies and analytical approaches.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

Download or read book States of Decadence written by Guri Barstad and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2016-12-14 with total page 305 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: States of Decadence is a two volume anthology that focuses on the literary and cultural phenomenon of decadence. Particular attention is given to literature from the end of the 1800s, the fin de siècle; however, the essays presented here are not restricted to this historical period, but draw lines both back in time and forward to our day to illuminate the contradictory multiplicity inherent in decadence. Furthermore, the essays go beyond literary studies, drawing on a number of the tropes and themes of decadence manifested in the arts and culture, such as in music, opera, film, history, and even jewelry design. Volume 2 comprises essays on the following thematic areas: “Images of Decadent Women”, “Transmedia Decadence”, “Contemporary Decadence”, and “Poetic Decadence”. The contributors are part of an active network of international scholars from many different countries. As the expansive title of the volume suggests, they explore the decadent aesthetic approach to the arts, to culture, and to a worldview that juxtaposes a strange mixture of conservatism and rebellion, ambivalence and deep convictions.

Download or read book L criture est la peinture de la voix written by Gillian Pink and published by Liverpool University Press. This book was released on 2024-11-15 with total page 208 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: L’Écriture est la peinture de la voix honours and celebrates the inestimable contributions that Professor Nicholas Cronk has made to our understanding of the Enlightenment. As director of the University of Oxford’s Voltaire Foundation, he has played a decisive role in eighteenth-century studies. In particular he has shaped our knowledge of Voltaire as a writer, celebrity and era-defining figure whose influence has continued to be felt through the centuries. Comprising essays by a host of internationally eminent scholars, this volume is a fitting tribute to the esteem and affection in which Nicholas Cronk is held as a colleague, teacher and mentor. These sixteen essays reflect his varied research interests, exploring questions central to the eighteenth century, such as the writing process, justice, revolution, as well as the legacy of the Enlightenment, and focussing on the central figure in Nicholas Cronk’s research: Voltaire. In sections devoted to Voltaire’s writing practices, to his involvement in political, literary and religious polemics, and finally to his legacy, the essays build on Nicholas Cronk’s scholarship and editorial achievements, opening up a new chapter in research on Voltaire. This volume is complemented by an online collection of essays which speak to other topics central to Nicholas Cronk’s interests, such as authorial identities, correspondence and aesthetics.
