Book excerpt: Excerpt from Preaching and Public Speaking: A Manual for the Use of Preachers Now after many years, when the other trees began to bear abundantly, each laborer betook himself to a special part of the garden, and soon became burdened with the much fruit thereof. And the sacred tree became no one's care. The weeds grew rank about its trunk, and many Of its limbs began to show dry ends; for the life-giving stream was used elsewhere. On stated days the laborers assembled about the tree, and many were sorrowful when they looked upon it, and the people murmured among themselves when they saw how it' was neglected. Nevertheless the laborers went back again, each to his burdensome labors, and forgot all about it. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Pulpit and Platform

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Pulpit and Platform: Being Notes on the Management of the Voice in Public Speaking, With Chapters on Reading and Speaking in Public, and Extemporary Preaching It is sometimes asserted that the influence of the public speaker, or orator, if it is preferred to call him so, whether lay or ecclesiastical, has been much diminished by the general diflusion of education, with the corresponding increase of reading matter and readers that has natur ally followed. The pen, it is alleged, is now much mightier than the voice. The Press is sup posed to have ousted the Pulpit, and to be about to make short work of the Platform. In conse quence the art of oratory, it is said, is no longer of much value. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Preaching and Public Speaking

Download or read book Preaching and Public Speaking written by Nels L. Nelson and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-06-02 with total page 458 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Preaching and Public Speaking: A Manual for the Use of Preachers This book was the outgrowth of ten years observation and reflection. The conviction that such a work was needed came to the author while on a mission to the Southern States, where he had frequent occasion to deplore the waste of time, money, energy, and opportunity to save souls, - to say nothing of the mental anguish, - which is involved before the raw missionary, with no other guide than hit and miss experiment, is changed into the fairly capable preacher. The conviction was intensified by his acting as clerk of Sabbath meetings at home for three years, and having to record the substance of the sermons there delivered. If any one would know how strong is the sense of religious duty among Latterday Saints, even in the face of peculiar discouragements, let him note how, in spite of our desultory preaching, they still continue to attend meeting on the Sabbath day. But much as he saw the need of such a work, he naturally hesitated before putting his thoughts on paper; as who would not, in view of the general sentiment respecting criticism of preaching? The matter came to a head, however, in the following manner: A much respected but wordy brother had occupied the time of the congregation for one hour. Try as I would, I could get nothing coherent from the sermon to set down in the record. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. This book was released on 2017-10-12 with total page 590 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Treatise on the Preparation and Delivery of Sermons Special pains have been taken, at the proper points of the treatise, to give practical suggestions for ex temporaneous speaking. Most works confine their instruction as regards the preparation of sermons to the case of writing out in full; and many treat of delivery, as if it were in all cases to be reading or recitation. The effort has here been to keep the different methods in view, and to mention, in con nection with matters applicable to all alike, such as apply to one or another method in particular. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Victory of Faith: Sermons and Addresses The sermon is the Stateliest and most noble form of human Speech. It deals with the deepest questions and most vital subjects that can engage the attention of man. The preacher who has a real message from God, and can deliver it in such a way as to command the attention of the public, is a blessing to any age. He is a prophet of God, and his utterances cannot fail to profoundly impress the public mind. When such a preacher has power to clothe his message in winning speech, and to breathe into it a passion which it has begotten in his own heart, his sermons have an added value and are entitled to a wider hearing than they can receive from the pulpit, no matter how large the audiences may be. The author of these sermons combines, in a remarkable degree, these essential elements of a great preacher: clear ness of thought, power of imagination and feeling, and the gift of vivid expression. He sees truth in its larger rela tions and has a clear grasp of the fundamental verities of religion. He sees too clearly the great and vital issues of Christianity to waste much time on doubtful disputations. The volume of sermons which is here offered to the public is scarcely less notable for the topics it discusses than for the vigor of style in which they are treated.
