Download or read book Education and Language in the Philippines written by Lorraine Pe Symaco and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2022-02-28 with total page 137 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Education and Language in the Philippines provides a comprehensive overview of the critical role of education and language development in the Philippines. Lorraine Pe Symaco and Francisco P. Dumanig highlight the economic, social, and political factors that led to the complexity of the country’s education system and language policies. In addition, they provide a nuanced discussion of the pressing issues regarding the contextual realities of Philippine education language policies and reforms, the role of multilingual education in learners’ identity formation, and the impact of multi-ethnic teaching approaches. The book emphasizes that in a plurilingual country, social actors contribute in many ways to the changes of language education policy. It explores and discusses how such policies are implemented and results in the development of multilingual education. This book is the first to comprehensively examine the interconnected roles of education and language in the Philippines.

Download or read book Philippine and Chamorro Linguistics Before the Advent of Structuralism written by Lawrence Andrew Reid and published by . This book was released on 2011 with total page 244 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. The papers assembled in this collection deal with the early linguistic sources on the languages of the Philippines and Micronesia. Tagalog, Bikol, Cebuano, Iloko, Chamorro and sundry languages of the area and beyond are featured in the papers. The focus is on the first descriptive work devoted to these languages and subsequent early treatments and their potential interdependency. Several papers also address the issue of how "modern" the early grammarians of Philippine languages were and to what extent they did typological linguistics avant la lettre. The collection is a pioneer contribution to the history of descriptive linguistics in Southeast Asia and the West Pacific. Moreover it offers a window to the past for the interested members of the modern speech communities of the languages covered by the papers.

Book Studies in Philippine Languages Cultures

Download or read book Studies in Philippine Languages Cultures written by Linguistic Society of the Philippines and published by . This book was released on 1999 with total page 124 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With this issue, the scope of this series is enlarged to include cultural as well as linguistic studies. Articles published in the series are based primarily on field work in Philippine cultural communities but occasionally studies are included on one of the major languages or languages spoken outside the Philippines. The present volume comprises three data-rich studies on Kagayanen by Carol Pebley and two Kagayanen texts. One text was collected and translated by Louise MacGregor and the other by Carol Jean Pebley. The interlinear gloss is supplied by Carol Jean Pebley. The texts illustrate the other three papers and provide checking some of the claims of the author. The sketch of the Kagayanen clause structures provides background information for the other two articles; it is not intended to be a complete grammar sketch. The section on noun phrases in "Kagayanen enclitic demonstratives" also provides background. That article and "Participant reference in Kagayanen" illustrate the importance of discourse studies for understanding the structure and function of clauses and phrases. Throughout the book, personal names in the examples from bibliographical texts have been changed. 13 references. (Author/KFT)

Book Philippine English

Download or read book Philippine English written by Margarete Misch and published by GRIN Verlag. This book was released on 2008-07-04 with total page 18 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Seminar paper from the year 2008 in the subject Didactics for the subject English - Pedagogy, Literature Studies, grade: 2,0, Martin Luther University, course: Postcolonial English, language: English, abstract: The spread of English around the world has offered us a diverse range of varieties of English. Within the framework of Postcolonial English varieties, I have investigated the Philippine variety of English, which was a result of and emerged from its colonial background. In Braj Kachru’s model of World English dialects, Philippine English belongs to what are called the ‘outer circle’ countries and is used in the major institutions as a legacy of colonisation. As a result, English has a great historical importance and serves as a lingua franca between the different ethnic and language groups. To fully understand the make-up of Philippine English, we need to take a look at the derivation and spread of the language. Aside from introducing general facts about the country, I will examine the origins of the language and the arrival of English in Philippine history. Furthermore, I will briefly explore the present-day language situation, especially the different local languages and the code-switching or code-mixing between the two official languages Filipino and English. By looking at the characteristic features of Philippine English, I want to show the general, phonological, morpho-syntactical and lexical differences from General American English. Finally, I want to discuss the significance of Philippine English for a teacher of foreign languages and to draw conclusions regarding the impact of English on the Philippines. II. Basic facts The Philippines are located in Southeast Asia, archipelago between the Philippine Sea and the South China Sea, east of Vietnam. The land has an area of 298,170 km2 and is slightly larger than Arizona. The Philippines consist of 7,107 islands in the western Pacific Ocean, of which only eleven are bigger than 2500 km2. The biggest islands are: Luzon, Mindanao, Samar, Negros, Cebu, Leyte, Mindoro, Panay and Palawan. Only 1000 islands are bigger than 1 km2. An estimated population of 91,077,287 (July 2007) lives in the Philippines. The capital of the Philippines is Manila and the largest town is Quezon City. Religious affiliations include Roman Catholic 80.9%, Muslim 5%, Evangelical 2.8%, Iglesia ni Kristo 2.3%, Aglipayan 2%, other Christian 4.5%, other 1.8%, unspecified 0.6% and none 0.1% (2000 census). In addition to a mixture of religions there are also several languages. The two official languages are Filipino (based on Tagalog) and English, but about 180 languages and dialects exist on the island.
