Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Design of Alternate-Current Transformers The invention of the alternate-current transformer some years ago led to the introduction of the system of high-tension distribution of electric energy for lighting purposes. The saving in the first cost of the copper mains being the chief advantage of the system in the eyes of the promoters, the question of the efficiency of this method of supply, except at full load, was not considered. Now, experience has shown that the cost of the annual supply depends largely on the. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book The Alternating Current Transformer Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Alternating Current Transformer Classic Reprint written by Frank George Baum and published by . This book was released on 2015-06-29 with total page 208 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Alternating Current Transformer The following pages originated from a course of University lectures. It is hoped that the book will be of use to the engineer and general reader. Some knowledge of elementary alternating currents is presupposed. I have found that the student who grasps the theory of the transformer has little difficulty with the more complicated actions and reactions taking place in the induction motor, and is also helped in his study of synchronous apparatus. Chapters I and II are merely introductory. Chapters III to V, carefully studied, should give the reader a thorough knowledge of the transformer. The tests in Chapter VI should be carried out by the student on a few commercial types. The method of design in Chapter VII is offered as a probable improvement over that usually given in text books. I wish to thank the manufacturers for the loan of cuts used in Chapter X. Thanks are also due the publishers who have maintained their reputation for sparing no effort or expense to make the book mechanically as perfect as possible. I am indebted to Mr. A. S. Kalenborn for reading proofs. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Equipment for Testing Current Transformers Classic Reprint

Download or read book Equipment for Testing Current Transformers Classic Reprint written by Francis B. Silsbee and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-27 with total page 38 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Equipment for Testing Current Transformers The equipment and methods used for this purpose at the Bureau of Standards at Washington have been modified and enlarged from time to time to keep pace with the increasing demands in accuracy and range of the transformers to be tested. The object of this paper is to describe the equipment and methods 1 now in use at this Bureau in the hope that the data given may be of assistance to other labora tory workers who may wish to install apparatus for similar work. The accuracy needed in this class of testing should, if possible, be so high that errors in the certified values will be negligibly small in comparison with the inaccuracy likely to occur in the next step in the measurement process; that is, in the comparison in the field between the standard transformer and the working transformer. A limit to the possible accuracy is, of course, set by the repeatability of the transformer under test. This limit is influenced by a number of factors, among which are changes in the magnetic condition of the core as a result of previous operation, uncertainties in the temperature of the transformer windings and hence in their resistance, and uncer tainty in the exactness with which the burden used in the field is duplicated in the test. In the case of hole-type current transformers additional uncertainty arises because of differences in the position of [the primary conductor in the hole, and in the position of the return lead. The magnitude of the changes in calibration resulting from these effects depends greatly upon the type of transformer, but may amount to several tenths of 1 percent. The sensitivity of the present equipment is such that a change of percent in ratio and minute in phase angle is definitely detectable even at a secondary current as small as ampere. Changes in the performance of the transformer under test are there fore often noted. The accuracy of the equipment, since it involves the calibration of resistance standards of widely different values with the additional liability to errors from skin effect and residual self - induct ance, is, perhaps, not as high as the precision mentioned above would indicate. The accuracy limits printed on the Bureau's certificate form (viz, percent in ratio and 3 minutes in phase angle) are, however, certainly very conservative. In reducing the observed values all corrections are normally carried to the nearest percent and minute and the resulting values are then rounded off in the certificate to the nearest percent and 1 minute. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Transformers: Their Theory, Construction and Amplification, Simplified It has often been observed by almost every member of the electrical fraternity, that induction, and its out come, the transformer, is to the popular mind, the greatest mystery of the whole lighting system with which they come in contact. There is something tangible about the dynamo. Its movement, and the applied power are apparent. The lamp glows, and its action is appreciable, but the trans former remains to them an uncanny mystery. So too the average electrician whose training has long accustomed him to the management and applica tion of the electric current, finds in the transformer as a rule, more points regarding which his mind is hazy and uncertain, than in any other one piece of appara tus with which he has to deal. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of the Transformer As of late the employment of alternating current transformers has largely increased and become of great importance, indeed as they are called upon to play a striking part in electric lighting from central stations, the author has thought a short notice of the development of this invention would possess some interest. This task appeared to be so much the more pressing, as many distorted versions of the invention and its priority have found place in the technical journals. The author has not let the reading of the large number of patents discourage him, and hopes that the following plain and concise statement of these researches will contribute towards the forming of a correct judgment as to the services rendered by the several inventors. Book Transformer Practice

Download or read book Transformer Practice written by William Thomas Taylor and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-03-18 with total page 288 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Transformer Practice: Manufacture, Assembling, Connections, Operation and Testing The development of the alternating-current transformer dates back about 25 years. At that time very little was known re garding design for operation at high voltages, and the engineer of the present day can scarcely realize the difficulties encountered in the construction of the early transformers. The high-voltage transformer made long-distance trans mission work possible, and the increased distances of transmission stimulated the design of large transformers. In the early days of transformer development as many as 15 to 20 transformer secondary windings have been connected in series to facilitate the operation of a long-distance transmission system, the maxi mum rating of each transformer being not greater than 10 kw. However, a method of constructing large transformers has long been devised by which an enormous amount of power may be transformed in a single unit. Such designs embody principles of insulation for high voltages and various methods for maintain ing a low operating temperature. Ten years ago a 500-kilowatt unit was considered to be a large size of transformer. The history of ten years' development has shown a most interesting process of evolution: it has marked more than a tenfold increase in size up to the present day. Download or read book A Study of the Transformer Magnetic Circuit Classic Reprint written by Robert Gray and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-26 with total page 156 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Study of the Transformer Magnetic Circuit The alternating current transformer has opened up and made possible the development of a branch of electrical industry which a few years ago would have seemed impossible. Perhaps the m st striking illustrations of electrical development along the line referred to above are: the generation of electric power at Niagara, and its subsequent economical transmission to Buffalo, and the performance of the Fresno plant in California. In this latter, power is developed by a water fall and transmitted to Fresno, a distance of thirty five miles. Step up transformers are used at the generating end. The line tension in both cases is about eleven thousand volts. Step down transformers are used at the distributing end.
