Book excerpt: Excerpt from Papers of the American School of Classical Studies at Athens The present volume represents the work of the American School of Classical Studies at Athens from the summer of 1890 to that of 1897. All the papers here collected have appeared already in the American Journal of Archaeology. The present Committee on Publications is responsible only for those papers which appeared after the summer of 1893. This change in editorship during the appearance of the papers forming the volume, together with changes in the place of publication of the American Journal of Archaeology, and in the firms electro typing the articles as they successively appeared, has made it impossible for the present editorial committee to secure unity of form in expression or typography. What unity has been secured is due to extensive alterations of the plates, 'a thankless task, but cheerfully undertaken for the Committee by the present publishers. It is hoped that even in its outward form the volume may not unworthily conclude the series. Its con tents certainly testify to broadening activity and scholarship on the part of managers and members of the School. Further papers on the excavations of the School at the Argive Heraeum will probably form' a special volume, published under the auspices of the Institute. The Institute is also. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Papers of the American School of Classical Studies at Athens, Vol. 1: 1882-1883 The regulations of the american school OF classical studies AT athens provide that there shall be published annually a volume of Papers of the School, to be made up from the work of the Director and the students during the preceding school year. This volume, now issued in tardy compliance with the rule, represents portions of the work Of the first school year, 1882 - 1883. The publication has been delayed by various unavoidable difficulties, among which must be mentioned those which have attended the preparation and the printing Of two collections of Greek inscriptions. Even now it has been necessary to post pone the appearance Of Dr. Crow's paper on the Pnyx: this, and probably one or two other papers belonging to the work of the first school year, will form part of the second volume, which, it is hoped, will be published before the end of the present year. One paper which will be included in the second volume, Dr. Sterrett's Preliminary Report of his journey in Asia Minor in 1884, with his col lection of inscriptions (including those Of forty-two Roman milestones), has been published already in a separate form. This book was released on 2018-02-11 with total page 304 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Papers of the American School of Classical Studies at Athens, Vol. 4 This fourth volume of the Papers of the American School of Classical Studies at Athens follows the first after an interval of three years. The first volume represented the work of the first year of the School, 1882 - 1883, and it was hoped that it would be followed by a similar volume for each succeeding year. But as no material for a volume of Papers to represent the second or the third year of the School has come to the Committee of Publication, it has been decided to devote the second and third volumes (belonging to the years 1883 - 1884 and 1884 - 1885) to the publication of the reports of Dr. J. R. S. Sterrett's two journeys in Asia Minor, with his large collections of inscriptions, most of which have never been published before. These journeys were made in the summers of 1884 and 1885, to a great extent under the auspices of the School at Athens. A Preliminary Report of the journey of 1884 was published in 1885 and it was at first intended to make this a part of the second volume of Papers, which the Committee then hoped to publish within the same year. But the great importance of that journey, and the large collection of new and valuable inscriptions discovered and copied by Dr. Sterrett in the course of it (of which the Preliminary Report contains only a small portion), have made it necessary to devote a whole volume to the publication of its results. This will form the second volume of Papers of the School. It is now in press, and will, it is hoped, be published in the autumn of the present year. The results of Dr. Sterrett's journey of 1885, known as The \volfe Expedition to Asia Minor, the expense of which was defrayed by the late Miss Catharine L. Wolfe of New York, through the agency of the Managing Committee of the School, fill the third volume of Papers. This will be published in advance of the second, at about the same time with the present volume. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. In surveying these results, the School can fairly claim that some real gains have been made in the domains of Greek topography, archi tecture, and art. The thanks of the managing-committee are due to Dr. Theodor Mommsen, who has placed his high authority at their service in his article commenting on the fragment of the Edict of Diocletian found by the School at Plataia, which forms one of the papers presented. The stamps were carefully cleansed by means of crude concentrated hydrochloric acid and a stifi brush, and subsequent rinsing with cold water; then read or deciphered as well as their often very defective condition permitted, if necessary in a darkened room by a strong side-light, and at last carefully recorded in the following Table. The number of stamps and other marks thus obtained was 832, of which 594 are lettered, whole and fragmentary, the fragments not belonging to the same brick, and 238 figured, whole and fragmentary, the latter likewise not belonging to the same brick. The stamps and marks are, by our registration, of 464 different kinds. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. This book was released on 2015-07-20 with total page 471 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Papers of the American School of Classical Studies at Athens, Vol. 3: 1884-1885; The Wolfe Expedition to Asia Minor The Managing Committee of the American School of Classical Studies at Athens have decided to devote the second and third volumes of their Papers to the publication of the important results of Professor Sterrett's two journeys in Asia Minor made in the summers of 1884 and 1885. Dr. Sterrett was a student at the School during its first year, 1882-1883, and edited the inscriptions of Assos and of Tralleis for the first volume of Papers. He was also in Athens during the greater part of the second year, having kindly and generously abandoned his own work of exploration to assist Professor Packard in the direction of the School. The noble gift of Miss Wolfe, by which the expenses of the Wolfe Expedition were defrayed, was transmitted through the agency of the Managing Committee. It is, therefore, especially proper that the School should undertake the publication of these two reports, with the large collections of inscriptions, mostly hitherto unpublished, which Dr. Sterrett has copied on his journeys. The Committee of Publication wish it to be distinctly understood, that for obvious reasons, which they trust will commend themselves to all, they have undertaken no editorial supervision of these volumes, and that Dr. Sterrett is solely responsible for all that appears in them under his name, as regards both the substance and the form.
