Book excerpt: Excerpt from Papers and Notes on the Glacial Geology of Great Britain and Ireland I must, however, venture to set aside the injunction laid upon me to criticise as well as arrange and edit. In the first place, Professor Lewis' own opinions and the grounds upon which he held them are the matters of supremest importance and, in the second place, he states his case SO powerfully as to render a further investigation of the debatable points at issue absolutely unnecessary. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Geological Notes of Ireland To the traveller and the tourist, who have made acquaintance with it in its most initiatory forms, it cannot fail to prove interesting, as recalling to mind, at a single glance of the surrounding scenery through which business or pleasure may lead them, the geological formation of the country through which they pass. The serrated peak, the conical summit, the tabular, stair-like mountain, the precipitous cliff, the undulating plain, all tell their own tale, leading the mind insensibly back to periods and ages of indefinite time, long and long before man existed upon this earth; and to explain all this is my present purpose. Book Manual of the Geology of Ireland

Download or read book Manual of the Geology of Ireland written by G. Henry Kinahan and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-06-12 with total page 517 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Manual of the Geology of Ireland In his Explanation to his exhaustive list of the Irish Carboniferous Fossils, that able and veteran Irish Geologist, Sir Richard J. Griffith, Bart., states that it had always been his intention to publish a Geology of Ireland, but that his official duties pressed so heavily on him, that the time to accomplish the task was never at his disposal. Under these circumstances I have, therefore, been induced to attempt it. I have not relied solely upon my own personal knowledge of the country, but have consulted all public and private records and papers relating to the Geology of Ireland to which I could get access. First and most important in the list are the invaluable maps and writings of Sir R. J. Griffith. I would here allude to the personal obligations I am under to that gentleman, as, since I first knew him, nearly a quarter of a century ago, he has never refused an opportunity of enlightening me on the entangled and obscure points of Irish Geology, and of directing my attention to those points still to be worked out. Next in importance are Jukes's maps and writings. Of these I have availed myself largely; whilst in regard to the Geology of the North of Ireland, Portlock's maps and publications have been extensively used and quoted. Book Glacial Deposits in Great Britain and Ireland

Download or read book Glacial Deposits in Great Britain and Ireland written by Juergen Ehlers and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 1991-07-31 with total page 589 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With the increasing awareness of environmental problems, there is a growing desire for a de¬tailed understanding of superficial deposits in general, and glacial deposits in particular. This is because these sediments have a profound influence on groundwater protection, waste management and nature conservation. They are also of vital importance to civil engineering, because they provide the foundation for, as well as the materials extracted to build our roads and buildings. The greater part of the British Isles was glaciated, at least once, during the Quater¬nary Era. In the regions subjected to glaciation, glacial deposits underlie much of the present land surface. Although there have been many recent publica¬tions on various Quaternary geological topics, the present volume is the first dedicated to a detailed assessment of the glacial deposits of Britain and Ireland. After introductory chapters presenting the glacial history, the sedimentary sequences in 24 critical regions are discussed. These regions include all of Ireland, the gla¬ciated area of Great Britain, and the adjoining offshore region of the North Sea. The controver¬sial evolution of the Irish Sea Basin during the Last Glaciation is discussed from various view¬points. A collection of 'critical topics' presented in the later part of the book range from the classification of glacigenic landforms and de¬posits to the results of geophysical, geotechnical and geochemical analyses. The book includes 368 figures, 40 tables and 51 colour photographs, a detailed index and a list of over 1000 references. With 45 contributions by 48 scientists, this volume represents a truly contemporary view of this field of research. To¬gether with its companion volume the Glacial deposits in North-West Europe, this book pro¬vides an excellent textbook for the advanced student or the amateur, as well as an indispen¬sible source- and guidebook for the professional scientist.

Book Geology of the British Isles Classic Reprint

Download or read book Geology of the British Isles Classic Reprint written by P. G. H. Boswell and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-11 with total page 364 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Geology of the British Isles The completeness of the geological record in the British Isles, the variations in the facies of the different formations from place to place, and the immense volume of the literature that has accumulated, render it impossible for one man to do justice to the Regional Geology of the area. It was therefore decided to divide the work among a number of specialists, each of whom could write with authority on the subject allotted to him and be individually responsible for his contributions. Every effort has, however, been made to secure as much uniformity as was possible in bibliographical and typographical details. The majority of the illustrations have been taken by permission from the official Reports of the Geological Surveys and the publications of the Geological Society and of the Geo logists' Association, the exact source being given in each case. The general maps have been prepared by A. Morley davies, who has made a careful study of the structural geology of the whole country. He also had the advantage of detailed information supplied to him by other contributors. I am however responsible for the symbols employed on the structural maps, and the system of shading adopted in those showing the distribution of the different formations at the surface. Other maps and diagrams have been specially prepared for the present work by the contributors, who are identified by their initials. John W. Evans. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Transactions of the Geological Society of Glasgow, Vol. 1: Part II, on the Phenomena of the Glacial Drift of Scotland The chief addition to the agents demanded by Hall's hypo thesis was the introduction of ice as a means of transporting large masses of rock. Though the carrying power of ice had been so clearly pointed out by Playfair at the beginning of the century, yet his remarks for thirty or forty years appear to have been altogether forgotten. Hardly, however, had the speculations of Mr. Smith appeared, preceded and accompanied as they were by those of Sir Charles Lyell on the upraised deposits of Sweden and the sands and clays of Norfolk, ' when light from a new quarter began to dawn on the dark and obscure history of the Drift. Already in an address read before the Helvetic Natural History Society in the summer of Agassiz, following up the suggestion of Playfair and the bold speculations of Venetz,3 announced his belief that Switzer land had once been sealed in ice, that its rocks owed their present grooved and polished surfaces to the passage of this icy sheet over them, and that to the same cause was due the transport of enormous blocks of stone from the Alps to the J ura. In the following year, Dr. Buckland, under the guidance of the Swiss naturalist, examined these phenomena on the spot, and by witnessing the effects of actual glaciers, became convinced that the grooving and striation of the rocks of the British Isles, and the position of the erratic blocks there, though now far removed from any glacier, were, nevertheless, due to the same agency which is now grinding and polishing the sides of the higher valleys of the Alps. Download or read book The Parallel Roads of Glenroy written by James Macfadzean and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-07-06 with total page 176 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Parallel Roads of Glenroy: Their Origin and Relation to the Glacial Period and the Deluge In these unsatisfactory circumstances my paper was laid on the shelf, where it would probably have remained had not the appearance of Professor Prestwich's Monograph revived my interest in the ques tion. This distinguished geologist adopts the glacial-lake view as affording the most satisfactory solution of the problem, but suggests a somewhat different interpretation of the build of the barriers and the formation of the roads. According to his View the hills were covered with a coating, several feet thick of local angular fragments mixed with sand and clay, the product of the great ice sheet. But to explain the modus operandi, I had better cite the account given of the supposed formation of the middle road. On the bursting of the ice barrier in Glen Glaster the glacial lake necessarily fell to the level of the col at the head of that. Glen. As the lake fell rapidly, says the Professor, and exposed this detrital bank, the saturated mass of debris would part with its water.
