This book was released on 2017-11-25 with total page 590 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Papers and Notes on the Glacial Geology of Great Britain and Ireland I must, however, venture to set aside the injunction laid upon me to criticise as well as arrange and edit. In the first place, Professor Lewis' own opinions and the grounds upon which he held them are the matters of supremest importance and, in the second place, he states his case SO powerfully as to render a further investigation of the debatable points at issue absolutely unnecessary. Book European Glacial Landscapes

Download or read book European Glacial Landscapes written by David Palacios and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2023-10-21 with total page 637 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: European Glacial Landscapes: The Holocene presents the current state of knowledge on glacial landscapes of Europe and nearby areas over the Holocene to deduce the influence of atmospheric and oceanic currents and the insolation forcing variability and volcanic activity on Holocene paleoclimates, the existence of asynchronies in the timing of occurrence of glacier expansion and shrinkage during the Holocene, time lags between the identification of oceanic and atmospheric changes and those occurring in glacial extension during the Holocene, the role of Holocene glaciers on the climate of Europe, and on sea level variability, and the delimitation of landscapes that need special protection. Students, academics and researchers in Geography, Geology, Environmental Sciences, Physics and Earth Science departments will find this book provides novel findings of all the major European Regions in a single publication, with updated information about Holocene glacial geomorphology and paleo-climatology and clear figures that model the landscapes covered. Provides a synthesis and summary of glacial processes in Europe over the Holocene period Features research from experts in palaeo-climatology, palaeo-oceanography and palaeo-glaciology Includes access to a companion website with an interactive map, photos of glacial features, and geospatial data related to European Glacial Landscapes

Book Advances in Irish Quaternary Studies

Download or read book Advances in Irish Quaternary Studies written by Peter Coxon and published by Springer. This book was released on 2016-10-20 with total page 316 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides a new synthesis of the published research on the Quaternary of Ireland. It reviews a number of significant advances in the last three decades on the understanding of the pattern and chronology of the Irish Quaternary glacial, interglacial, floristic and occupation records. Those utilising the latest technology have enabled significant advances in geochronology using accelerated mass spectrometry, cosmogenic nuclide extraction and optically stimulated luminescence amongst others. This has been commensurate with high-resolution geomorphological mapping of the Irish land surface and continental shelf using a wide range of remote sensing techniques including MBES and LIDAR. Thus the time is ideal for a state of the art publication, which provides a series of authoritative reviews of the Irish Quaternary incorporating these most recent advances.

Book Periglacial Processes and Landforms in Britain and Ireland

Download or read book Periglacial Processes and Landforms in Britain and Ireland written by John Boardman and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2011-04-14 with total page 312 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This 1987 book examines the intimate link between periglacial geomorphology and the fluctuating climates of the Quaternary Period in the British Isles. In the last two million years, ice sheets have covered northern Britain several times. In the south, at the limit of the glaciation, intense frost action and the formation of permafrost have influenced past and present landscapes. The first part of the book looks at areas of the world that have climates similar to periglacial Britain: Scandinavia, the Canadian Arctic, and alpine regions. Contributors then present data on periglacial landforms in the British Isles. Topics discussed include the periglaciation of upland Britain, ground ice depressions, and pingo remnants. The regions surveyed stretch from northern Scotland to the Isles of Scilly. The contributions are based on a conference held in late 1985 under the sponsorship of the International Geographical Union and the Quaternary Research Association of the United Kingdom.
