Book Wreath Layer Or Policy Player

Download or read book Wreath Layer Or Policy Player written by Paul Kengor and published by Lexington Books. This book was released on 2000 with total page 356 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since World War II, American vice presidents have played an ever-increasing role in the nation's foreign policy. This study of the foreign-policy activities of five key vice presidents--Richard Nixon, Walter Mondale, George Bush, Dan Quayle, and Al Gore--provides the first comprehensive analysis of the role of the vice president in foreign-policy affairs. In order to bring readers to a better understanding of this role, Paul Kengor asks incisive questions: Did the vice presidents' involvement in foreign policy actually benefit the administration? If so, what useful lessons can be drawn from their experiences? Is there good reason to approve or reject an enhanced role in foreign policy for future vice presidents? How, specifically, might the vice president be used in conducting the nation's international affairs? The answers to these questions are crucial reading for scholars of the presidency and foreign policy, for policy makers, and for all of us assessing vice presidents past and future.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since his first novel with a homosexual topic, The City and the Pillar, appeared in 1948, Gore Vidal has been seen as an enfant terrible of American letters. Through his ongoing writing career, he has examined (homo)sexuality in the context of cultural, religious and socio- political developments, so that it is fascinating to revisit his critical, sometimes cynical and always wittily presented ideas which were formed at a time when Gay Liberation, Gay Literature and Gay Identity were still unheard of and to discover the meaning these ideas still hold for us today.

Book The Rise and Fall of Democracy Promotion in US Foreign Policy

Download or read book The Rise and Fall of Democracy Promotion in US Foreign Policy written by Matthew Alan Hill and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2022-02-20 with total page 66 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Rise and Fall of Democracy Promotion in US Foreign Policy employs a transformational change framework to understand US democracy promotion from 1977 until the present day. American exceptionalism is a framework that has driven the US since the founding days of the republic, charging the US to promote the universal values of liberty and the pursuit of happiness around the world. Providing a frame of continuity for successive administrations, it reinforces the mythology of American exceptionalism in the eyes of the American people and the world. In different eras, different presidential worldviews, along with different international and domestic factors, have shaped how each administration has acted in the international arena and yet all have employed this language regardless of the policies pursued. This timely volume maps-out and interrogates through four key indicators the rise and fall of democracy promotion at the conceptualisation, rhetorical, and implementation levels. It argues that there were two transformational changes during this period. The first was the expansion of democracy promotion in US foreign policy confirmed with the election of Jimmy Carter to the White House in 1977. The second was the rejection of liberal ideology and institutions confirmed with Donald Trump’s election in 2016. It is nuanced in that it shows how these changes in the acceptance and then rejection of democracy promotion as a foreign policy tool played out. In examining these two administrations, and those in-between, this work also observes that the rise and fall of democracy promotion as an effective foreign policy tool mirrored the relative dominance of the US in the international arena. This book will be of interest to students and scholars of American foreign policy, international relations, and American history.

Book Ten Years After 9 11 Rethinking the Jihadist Threat

Download or read book Ten Years After 9 11 Rethinking the Jihadist Threat written by Arabinda Acharya and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-03-05 with total page 207 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ten years after the 9/11 attacks this book reassesses the effectiveness of the "War on Terror", considers how al-Qaeda and other jihadist movements are faring, explores the impact of wider developments in the Islamic world such as the Arab Spring, and discusses whether all this suggests that a new approach to containing international, especially jihadist, terrorism is needed. Among the book’s many richly argued conclusions are that the "War on Terror" and the invasions of Afghanistan and Iraq have brutalised the United States; that the jihadist threat is not one, but rather a wide range of separate, unconnected struggles; and that al-Qaeda’s ideology contains the seeds of its own destruction, in that although many Muslims are content to see the United States worsted, they do not approve of al-Qaeda’s violence and are not taken in by the jihadists’ empty promises of utopia.
