Some of you may wonder why Marilyn; why read from her pages; why listen to her voice? I ask, Ladies, why not me? Why not from a baby boomer who is gingerly sprinting into her sixth decade of life? Why not reap the benefits of seeds sown by a seasoned Sister who has mastered the art of listening, a woman wise enough to listen to God first, foremost and always? Ive been a child and an adult/a mother and a wife/a loyal lover, a faithful friend/ and a helping and watchful neighbor. Ive been victim and victor/suffered ups and downs/Ive run cold and hot/and Ive been right and Ive been wrong. I have a style of humor that can only be described as unique. Again, Ladies, why not me? Ive tried to accentuate the positive and minimize the negative. Im far from perfect; Im a multi-flawed me. And, although I have affected some bad choices, I made the good decision to live a humble and Godly life, a life in which I believe God is pleased. Why me, Ladies? Because the favor of the Lord says so. It was with favor that I received the words for Paper Voices, and it is with confidence in their truths and wisdom that I believe its Gods Will that you too will be blessed. Now, Ladies, lets have at it. Paper Voices: From the page to the heart unabashedly saying this, that, the other and more. Book excerpt: Voices: Postgraduate Perspectives on Inter-disciplinarity was created out of a compilation of papers presented at the University of Aberdeen’s annual College of arts and Social Sciences Postgraduate Conference, more widely known as Moving Forward. This conference reached its sixth year in 2009. Both the conference and proposed collection incorporate the colleges of Divinity, History and Philosophy; Education; Language and Literature; Law; Social Sciences; Music and Business. Moving Forward is an annual event, sponsored by the College of Arts and Social Sciences, University of Aberdeen, and the Roberts Fund. Given the variety of papers received for, and the number of disciplines involved in this project, it was deemed that a theme of “voice” would be particularly appropriate. This theme attempts to incorporate the interdisciplinary approach taken both within the selection of papers, and within the papers themselves. Voice is approached in a variety of manners, not only referring to the sound produced from the human vocal cords, or the literary tool of an author, but also through the works of a musical artist, or by using unique research methods to understand the perspectives of those lacking a public voice. This work seeks to demonstrate an entire range of what voices may do, and how they are experienced.

During America's reign as a dominant world power, U.S. presidents and senior foreign policy officials largely ignored or rejected their diplomats' reports, memos, and telegrams, especially when they challenged key policies relating to the Cold War, China, and the wars in Vietnam and Iraq. The Dissent Papers recovers these diplomats' invaluable perspective and their commitment to the transformative power of diplomatic writing. Gurman showcases the work of diplomats whose opposition enjoyed some success. George Kennan, John Stewart Service, John Paton Davies, George Ball, and John Brady Kiesling all caught the attention of sitting presidents and policymakers, achieving temporary triumphs yet ultimately failing to change the status quo. Gurman follows the circulation of documents within the State Department, the National Security Council, the C.I.A., and the military, and she details the rationale behind "The Dissent Channel," instituted by the State Department in the 1970s, to both encourage and contain dissent. Advancing an alternative narrative of modern U.S. history, she connects the erosion of the diplomatic establishment and the weakening of the diplomatic writing tradition to larger political and ideological trends while, at the same time, foreshadowing the resurgent significance of diplomatic writing in the age of Wikileaks.

Book excerpt: "The film industry in Hollywood now employs a global mode of production run by massive media conglomerates that mobilize hundreds, sometimes thousands, of workers for each feature film or television series. Yet these workers and their labor remain largely invisible to the general audience. In fact, this has been a signal characteristic of Hollywood style for more than a hundred years: everything that matters happens onscreen, not off. Consequently, when it comes to movies and television, the voices heard most often are those belonging to talent and corporate executives. Those we hear least are the voices of labor, and it's that silence we aim to redress in the collection of interviews in this book. Drawing from the detailed and personal accounts in this collection, we offer three interrelated propositions about the current state and future prospects of craftwork and screen media labor: 1. Craftwork exists within an intricate and intimate matrix of social relations. 2. Hollywood craftwork today constitutes a regime of excessive labor. 3. Screen media production is a protean entity. We organized the collection into three sections: company town, global machine, and fringe city. The first section refers to Hollywood's historic roots as a core component of the motion picture business. Using this approach, Schuler proposes a new model of social change that integrates theory and practice by showing how information and communication (whether face-to-face, broadcast, or Internet-based) can be used to address urgent social and environmental problems collaboratively. Each of the patterns that form the pattern language (which was developed collaboratively with nearly 100 contributors) is presented consistently; each describes a problem and its context, a discussion, and a solution. Not only does Schwan demonstrate strategies for interpreting ambivalent and often contradictory texts, she also provides a carefully historicized approach to the work of feminist recovery. Crossing class lines, genre boundaries, and gender roles in the effort to trace prisoners, authors, and female communities (imagined or real), Schwan brings new insight to what it means to locate feminist (or protofeminist) details, arguments, and politics. This new journalism came about as a result of dissatisfaction with existing values and standards of the early 1960s style of journalism.The authors are comprehensive in their concerns, as reflected in the national scope presented. They cover developments in the major cities, on both coasts, in the Middle West and South in every major region of the United States. Most of the research required travel and interviews; all of it required reading almost endlessly and watching the video productions of journalists who built the structure of alternative television. Dennis and Rivers offer a representative view of forms and media, as well as the people who fashioned the new orientation.The authors claim that the wrangling over objective and interpretative reporting misses the main point, which is that neither is in close touch with reality. The best objective report may cover all surfaces of an event, the best interpretative report may explain all its meanings, but both are bloodless, a world away from the experience. Color, flavor, atmosphere, the ultimate human meaning all these, the new journalists contend, are far beyond the reach of traditional models of journalism.
