Book excerpt: This book discusses the importance of socio-spatial patterns in cities that are embedded in the cultural heritage and self-understanding of a society, showing that Indian cities follow different urban concepts. In nine episodes (nine is a sacred figure), it highlights the principal influences and social impacts on cities from ancient times to contemporary city developments. As such, it provides planners and architects with insights that can easily be applied in contemporary cities and towns and help foster India’s cultural heritage—a much-needed, but little-discussed approach. Indian cities are the result of various factors, some imposed, others following local traditions that shaped them. They were founded around social needs, landscape conditions and production routines, as well as the religious influences of Hinduism, Buddhism, Jainism, Sikhism, Islam, Christianity and animism. However, Western town-planning models are often implemented, blurring the traditional way of life in cities. For sustainable town development, it is of key importance to find solutions that deal with Indian city models.

Book Indigenous Architecture in India

Download or read book Indigenous Architecture in India written by Gauri Bharat and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2024-06-21 with total page 215 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume focuses on socio- spatial practices of indigenous communities in India. It explores the interrelation between the built environments and lifeworlds, i.e. practices, patterns, and structures of everyday life. The chapters deal with different ideas and definitions of indigeneity, while also addressing the complex equations between the production and perception of built forms, indigenous technologies, on the one hand, and social, environmental and political contexts, questions of aesthetics, identity, and self-representation on the other. From Adivasi art and sacred sites to craft villages and nomadic pastoralists in western India, from indigenous bangle makers in urban north India to terracotta crafts people on the south, each chapter focuses on different communities and the contours of their contemporary lifeworlds. The contributions actively attempt to foreground the logic and perspectives of the communities themselves as the epistemological centre of the architectural and material discourses on indigeneity. This book will be useful for students, teachers, and researchers of architecture, urban design, urban studies, urban development and planning, anthropology, sociology, and museum studies. It will also be of interest to urban planners and designers, policy planners, local government authorities, and professionals engaged in the discipline.

Book History of Indian and Eastern Architecture

Download or read book History of Indian and Eastern Architecture written by James Fergusson and published by . This book was released on 1910 with total page 526 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Illustrations: 2 Maps, Numerous B/w Illustrations Description: The present reprint of Fergusson's History of Indian and Eastern Architecture is being brought out to meet the growing demand from scholars for whom this book is still the basic work of reference on Indian Architecture. In the preface to the second edition (1910) of this work James Burgess wrote, Though descriptions of Indian monuments may be written in various ways, no one could pretend to take up the systematic study of Indian Architecture without the aid of this work, and no history of Architecture can be scientifically written without appropriating the principles Mr. Fergusson showed how to apply. This work, in a way, fulfils the desire of Fergusson. In the Preface to the first edition of the book (1876) the author expressed his desire to open an hitherto unknown field of Indian Architecture and to give an impulse to its study, and assist in establishing Indian Architecture on a stable basis, so that it may take its true position among the other great styles which have ennobled the arts of mankind. It is needless to go into the merits of the present work. Fergusson covered in his study of Indian Architecture the vast range of time and space. Tracing the Indian Architecture from its remote antiquity, Fergusson covered the entire panorama of India with its diverse monuments including even the contemporary modes. In order to provide the reader with an all-encompassing view, he included in the present work, the Architecture of the neighbouring countries which were vastly influenced by the present-tradition of India. The books thus became, and still is, an authentic compendium on Architecture. The excellent woodcuts and photographs are still utilized for primary reference work.

Book Paradigms of Indian Architecture

Download or read book Paradigms of Indian Architecture written by G. H. R. Tillotson and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2014-04-23 with total page 208 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores conceptions of Indian architecture and how the historical buildings of the subcontinent have been conceived and described. Investigating the design philosophies of architects and styles of analysis by architectural historians, the book explores how systems of design and ideas about aesthetics have governed both the construction of buildings in India and their subsequent interpretation. How did the political directives of the British colonial period shape the manner in which pioneer archaeologists wrote the histories of India's buildings? How might such accounts conflict with indigenous ones, or with historical aesthetics? How might paintings of buildings by British and Indian artists suggest different ways of understanding their subjects? In what ways must we revise our conceptions of space and time to understand the narrative art which adorns India's most ancient monuments? These are among the questions addressed by the contributors to the volume.
