Book Pamphlet Architecture 21 Situation Normal

Download or read book Pamphlet Architecture 21 Situation Normal written by Paul Lewis and published by Princeton Architectural Press. This book was released on 1998-12 with total page 84 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this volume, the latest addition to the award-winning Pamphlet Architecture series, the authors examine common architectural forms (chairs, doors, and walls) and programs (a cinema, a health club, a skyscraper) in order to dissect and reconfigure them. In the process they create ten new projects that draw their power from an oscillation between the recognizable and the surreal. Cleverly undermining the conventions and norms of contemporary architectural design, the authors pose a direct challenge to the seemingly endless search for new styles, arguing instead that the greatest potential for architecture in the twenty-first century rests on an imaginative examination of what we take for granted. Designed by authors, Situation Normal... weaves together text, photographs, and drawings. An introductory essay establishes the theoretical and historical position of the book.

Book Pamphlet Architecture 31

Download or read book Pamphlet Architecture 31 written by Steven Holl and published by Princeton Architectural Press. This book was released on 2010-10-27 with total page 48 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This project has been generously supported by Capital Partners. After the devastating earthquake in Haiti, on January 12, 2010, Steven Holl had the idea of devoting the next Pamphlet Architecture book to solutions for rebuilding the architecture and infrastructure of the country. Going back to the origins of the series, which was founded by Holl in 1977, Pamphlet Architecture 31: New Haiti Villages presents Steven Holl Architects' vision for a new way of building in Haiti, with contributions from leading structural engineer Guy Nordenson and Matthias Schuler of climate engineering firm Transsolar. To avoid making architecture that would just repeat the problems of the past, Holl asked the following questions to guide his design: 1. How should Haiti rebuild? 2. If the political corruption before the earthquake was problematic, what now? 3. Can urban/architectural expression be by Haitians? 4. Will outside engineers build pragmatic strongboxes? 5. Can the poetry of Haitis wind and sea, its colors and vegetation, its sky, guide planners and architects? Holl attempts to answer these questions with his idea for "Dense-Pack Villages," a type of courtyard housing that could be built with recycled concrete from fallen buildings and steel and would be hurricane- and earthquake-resistant. Each "village" could house approximately 200 occupants, and the courtyards would be filled with greenery and fruit trees. Holl proposes that these houses use solar cells on their roofs to provide electricity, allowing the villages to potentially operate off the grid. Water can be supplied from desalinization plants in each village, and also from new reservoirs, replacing the outdated reservoirs that were destroyed in the earthquake. The architectural ideas present in sketches, scaled drawings, and models are given more definite form with scientific analysis and advice from engineers Nordenson and Schuler. Nordenson, with his colleage Rebecca Nixon, advises on how to improve the durability and safety of new buildings in Haiti through improved construction and structural engineering techniques. Schuler gives numbers and dimensions to the plans to use solar power, water desalinization, and gray-water recycling in the Dense-Pack Villages.

Book Move Sites of Trauma

Download or read book Move Sites of Trauma written by Johanna Saleh Dickson and published by . This book was released on 2002-12 with total page 86 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Founded in 1978 by architect Steven Holl and bookseller William Stout in an attempt to skirt the editorial control of the reigning architectural magazine culture, Pamphlet Architecture has been disrupting the status-quo ever since. This series of small experimental volumes has introduced important ideas and spurred much-needed debate among students and practitioners alike. Pamphlet Architecture 23 carries on this tradition with a book selected in an open competition. Johanna Saleh Dickson's entry was chosen from over seventy submissions received from architects, academics, and students from across the nation and around the world. Her pamphlet investigates the events of May 13, 1985, when a bomb was dropped by police on a Philadelphia row house in order to evacuate its residents-members of the radical organization MOVE. The fire that ensued killed 11 MOVE members and destroyed an entire city block. Tainted by these traumatic events, the reconstructed house located on the site has stood unoccupied for nearly two decades. Dickson proposes an architectural treatment that might facilitate and promote healing within the affected community. A call for ideas for Pamphlet 24 has already gone out. A winner will be selected in September of this year and the next innovative project will be published in spring of 2003.

Book Pamphlet Architecture 26 Thirteen Projects for the Sheridan Expressway

Download or read book Pamphlet Architecture 26 Thirteen Projects for the Sheridan Expressway written by Jonathan D. Solomon and published by Princeton Architectural Press. This book was released on 2004-02 with total page 128 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Conceived as a set of "Flexible Standards," this new addition to the Pamphlet Architecture series proposes a new way of thinking about roadways in cities. By reexamining the urban expressway as a political, physical, and mythic manifestation of American culture, this compelling pamphlet serves as a design manual for planners, a novel atlas for drivers, and a collection of proposals that reaffirm the role of architecture in urban planning. The thirteen projects take as their subject a site of contested transportation infrastructure -- the Sheridan Expressway. By proposing new typologies for this site, these studies seek to mediate the spaces in the city where local and regional meet. Referencing the introduction of the modern parkway into the Bronx, the grading of the Central Park transverse roads, and other works that have redefined the relationship between parks and roads, author Jonathan Solomon suggests a system by which large projects might again be built in American cities.

By addressing the capacity to cope, the ability to bounce back, and the mitigation and management of risk, participants were asked to showcase a fresh understanding of the architectural opportunities found in resilience. The winning entry successfully takes on the topic through an investigation of the ravaged city of Warsaw, Poland. By identifying, interrogating, and ultimately reinforcing both the physical and immaterial conditions of the landscape, the project allows the space to become something new and yet hold on to what it is, truly exhibiting resilience.

Book Pamphlet Architecture 33

Download or read book Pamphlet Architecture 33 written by Luis Callejas and published by Princeton Architectural Press. This book was released on 2013-06-04 with total page 80 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The competition for Pamphlet Architecture 33 asked previous authors in the series to nominate the architects and theorists whose work represents the most exciting design and research in the field today. The first of two winning entries (the other will be published in fall 2013 as PA 34) was submitted by Luis Callejas of LCLA Office in Medellin, Colombia. Pamphlet Architecture 33: Islands and Atolls asks how architecture might critically repurpose its traditionally limited disciplinary tools in order to make a meaningful impact at a territorial scale. Functioning as a landscape architect in a country that has no infrastructure for such a profession, Callejas questions pedagogical, disciplinary, and political norms at macro levels using micro tactics. As a result, PA 33 provocatively expands devices such as repetition and aggregation beyond their limits in scenarios where sociopolitical constraints seemingly prohibit what would normally be understood as an architectural intervention.
