Book The Works of Victor Hugo Classic Reprint

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Works of Victor Hugo These Greek capitals, black with age, and quite deeply graven in the stone, with I know not what signs peculiar to Gothic caligraphy imprinted upon their forms and upon their attitudes, as though with the purpose of revealing that it had been a hand of the Middle Ages which had inscribed them there, and especially the fatal and melancholy meaning contained in them, struck the author deeply. He questioned himself; he sought to divine who could have been that soul in torment which had not been willing to quit this world without leaving this stigma of crime or unhappi ness upon the brow of the ancient church. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Leaves From Elim Ir is the writer's pleasant fancy that these little bits of rhymes may be read under many a spreading tree during sunny summer days. The plentiful green grass will be the reader's couch, and the merry dancing leaves will make sweet music overhead. On the open page flecks of light will fall. The soft breeze will gently caress the tired face, and bring now the sound of the murmur of the brook, and now that of the exultant song of the lark or the thrush. Bees and butterflies will come near, and the scent of the hay will float over the hills and valleys, while the golden corn hangs out its banners, and the scarlet poppy lifts its head in warm greeting. In the distance will be the echo of the waves as they creep to the beach, and nearer the sound of village bells ringing festival music. And then may come the thought of other and more inspiring words than those which this book contains And he showed me a pure river of water of life, clear as crystal, proceeding out of the throne of God, and of the Lamb. In the midst of the street of it, and on either side of the river was there the tree of life, which bore twelve manner of fruits, and yielded her fruit every month, and the leaves of the tree were for the healing of the nations. May it be so! And God grant that under that tree we may all meet who have talked together of the Lamb in the midst of the throne, as we rested in our pilgrim-march by the wells and palm-trees of life's Elims. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The ancient Tamil poetic corpus of the Caṅam ("The Academy") is a national treasure for Tamilians and a battle-ground for linguists and historians of politics, culture and literature. Going back to oral predecessors probably dating back to the beginning of the first millennium, it has had an extremely rich and variegated history. Collected into anthologies and endowed with literary theories and voluminous commentaries, it became the centre-piece of the Tamil literary canon, associated with the royal court of the Pandya dynasty in Madurai. Its decline began in the late middle ages, and by the late 17th century it had fallen into near oblivion, before being rediscovered at the beginning of the print era. The present study traces the complex historical process of its transmission over some 2000 years, using and documenting a wide range of sources, in particular surviving manuscripts, the early prints, the commentaries of the literary and grammatical traditions and a vast range of later literature that creates a web of inter-textual references and quotations.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Palm Trees of the Amazon and Their Uses The materials for this work were collected during my travels on the Amazon and its tributaries from 1848 to 1862. Though principally occupied with the varied and interesting animal productions of the country I yet found time to examine and admire the wonders of vegetable life which everywhere abounded. In the vast forests of the Amazon valley tropical vegetation is to be seen in all its luxuriance. Huge trees with buttressed stems tangled climbers of fantastic forms and strange parasitical plants everywhere meet the admiring gaze of the naturalist fresh from the meadows and heaths of Europe.
