Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Palestine in the Time of Christ There is one conclusion, however, which I have not been able to refrain from expressing, because it forced itself upon me with ever deepening conviction as the work proceeded. I have given it in the form of an appendix in the last chapter. It is in substance this Jesus Christ was not the natural product of His environ ment; His appearance was a miracle; He came from God. Hence it is that a book of history, a work which is only a record of archaeological observations, subserves, by virtue of the invincible logic of facts, the cause of Christian apologetics. It has indeed been said, that my closing chapter is insufficient; that it should either not have been written, or the question should have been treated in greater fulness. I cannot accept this criticism, because, as I have already said, this chapter seemed to force itself upon me as the natural conclusion of my. Book. But I freely admit that what is still wanting is not one chapter on the'christ, but a complete study of His teaching, His person and work, written in the spirit of the present volume on strictly historic lines. This would require a book to itself, and in this sense the last chapter of the present work is undoubtedly incomplete. It is only a point of departure, the introduction to a volume to be occupied. Wholly with Christ Himself. Some day perhaps I may be privileged to attempt this, and to add my testimony to that of so many others, as to what the Christ was in His proper environment and in the critical age in which He lived. Book excerpt: Excerpt from From Manger to Throne: Embracing a New Life of Jesus the Christ and a History of Palestine and Its People I wrote this book for the masses. Who are the masses? The most of folks. They are the nine hundred and ninety-nine out of the thousand. I hope the title of the book will be suggestive of its contents. There are so many Lives of Christ that I wished to get a name not yet employed. On the rail train from St. Louis to New York, and while arriving at Alliance, Ohio, it flashed upon me from manger To throne. Book excerpt: Excerpt from New Paths Through Old Palestine From our earliest childhood when at Christ mas time we gazed with intense interest at the Wise-men on their gaily caparisoned camels, those great awkward ships of the desert have been associated in our minds with Palestine. The Child held close in Mary's arms as she sat upon the donkey while Joseph urged it on through the day and the night in the hurried flight into Egypt has made that faithful little beast a part of Palestine. In the East, the usages of daily life do not vary; this is a fact upon which too much stress cannot be laid. The East is stationary. In Palestine the same customs have survived not only the most terrible convulsions through which any country has ever passed, but also a total change of the population. The Arabs of to-day have the same practices as the Jews of old. Many of these are described in Genesis, and are as old as the times of the patriarchs. Jewish Children. It is well known that among the Jews the birth of a child was hailed with special delight, and the barrenness of a woman was a reproach, and might even be made sufficient reason for a divorce. There was less joy over the birth of a daughter than of a son; yet much care was bestowed upon her education.1 A midwife assisted at the birth.2 The child was bathed and rubbed with salt to harden the skin, and then wrapped in swaddling clothes.3 The father, who was not present at the time of the birth, then came in and took the child upon his knees. If the grandfather was still living, he sometimes had this privilege.4 It was expressly forbidden to make an exhibition of the children. Philo has an admirable chapter on this subject;5 and although the law of Moses says nothing on this point, it is certain that the exhibition of children, as practised by the Greeks and Romans, horrified the Jews. Book Galilee in the Time of Christ Classic Reprint

Download or read book Galilee in the Time of Christ Classic Reprint written by Selah Merrill and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-05 with total page 154 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Galilee in the Time of Christ The object of this work is to represent Galilee as it was in the time of our Lord. To do this will be, the author feels, a special service to many who are desirous of learning all that can be known of the earthly life of Christ. In fairness to the reader, it should be stated that the substance of this volume appeared as an Essay in 1874, which met with a very flattering reception in England, Germany, and America. The text for the present edition has been thoroughly revised and partly re-written. It is published now in the hope that the perusal of these pages will lead some minds to appreciate more forcibly than they have ever done before that the country where the Master appeared was Divinely chosen for that purpose, and that its natural features symbolise in a great degree both the beauty and the strength of the Christian Religion. Book Pictorial Journey Through the Holy Land Or Scenes in Palestine Classic Reprint

Download or read book Pictorial Journey Through the Holy Land Or Scenes in Palestine Classic Reprint written by London Religious Tract Society and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02 with total page 220 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Pictorial Journey Through the Holy Land, or Scenes in Palestine One land, and one alone, possesses an absorbing interest for those people of all races, in all parts of the world, who profess the name of Christ. No matter how much their one common tenet of faith in the Redeemer may be obscured by prejudice, or encumbered by superstition, if they believe in Christ at all, their attention will be at once attracted by anything which relates to the land in which the Whole natural mortal life of him, who put on our flesh and dwelt among us, was passed. Year by year, as that land and the districts adjacent to it are further explored, some fresh facts are ever being added to our still imperfect information concerning the localities mentioned in the Bible. Deeply interesting must it be to any Christian to wander throughout the country which was the subject of God's gracious promise to his chosen people. Still more interesting is it to him to see that each new discovery, geographical or archzeological, however trifling in itself, which it maybe his privilege to make, acquires a value altogether disproportionate to its own magnitude, because it bears upon a subject of such vital importance to us all, namely, the truth of every jot and every tittle of God's revealed word. Every such discovery will, he finds, corroborate some assertion, explain some allusion, or Show the falhl ment of some prophecy contained in that book, which we have humbly received as written under the direct inspiration of the Holy Spirit; and thus one more link is added to the long chain of indubitable facts, which proves to us that our faith in the word of God is not credulity, and our trust in the promises of Scripture is not a vain dream.
