Book Daily Life in Palestine at the Time of Christ

Download or read book Daily Life in Palestine at the Time of Christ written by Henri Daniel-Rops and published by Weidenfeld & Nicolson. This book was released on 2002 with total page 499 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The celebrated French Academician, Henri Daniel-Rops, recreates the world that gave birth to Christianity. The people who lived in Palestine at the time of Christ become flesh and blood with occupations, families and homes. You will sympathize with them, like them or dislike them. Even the land with its particular kinds of birds singing and its particular flowers and crops growing in its soil are reconstructed to give a full understanding of these people and their turbulent times. Daniel-Rops also brings to light the political, economic, scientific and cultural currents of the period. The events that preceded and surrounded the coming of Christ and the spread of Christianity are illuminated with immense scholarship and moving description, giving a clear picture of Christ among his people and in his time.

Book Reading and Writing in the Time of Jesus

Download or read book Reading and Writing in the Time of Jesus written by Allan Millard and published by A&C Black. This book was released on 2005-04-01 with total page 292 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Jesus never wrote a book. Most scholars assume that information about Jesus was preserved only orally up until the writing of the Gospels, allowing ample time for the stories of Jesus to grow and diversify. Alan Millard here argues that written reports about Jesus could have been made during his lifetime and that some among his audiences and followers may very well have kept notes, first-hand documents that the Evangelists could weave into their narratives.

Book Palestine in the Time of Christ Classic Reprint

Download or read book Palestine in the Time of Christ Classic Reprint written by Edmond Stapfer and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2016-10-03 with total page 572 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Palestine in the Time of Christ There is one conclusion, however, which I have not been able to refrain from expressing, because it forced itself upon me with ever deepening conviction as the work proceeded. I have given it in the form of an appendix in the last chapter. It is in substance this Jesus Christ was not the natural product of His environ ment; His appearance was a miracle; He came from God. Hence it is that a book of history, a work which is only a record of archaeological observations, subserves, by virtue of the invincible logic of facts, the cause of Christian apologetics. It has indeed been said, that my closing chapter is insufficient; that it should either not have been written, or the question should have been treated in greater fulness. I cannot accept this criticism, because, as I have already said, this chapter seemed to force itself upon me as the natural conclusion of my. Book. But I freely admit that what is still wanting is not one chapter on the'christ, but a complete study of His teaching, His person and work, written in the spirit of the present volume on strictly historic lines. This would require a book to itself, and in this sense the last chapter of the present work is undoubtedly incomplete. It is only a point of departure, the introduction to a volume to be occupied. Wholly with Christ Himself. Some day perhaps I may be privileged to attempt this, and to add my testimony to that of so many others, as to what the Christ was in His proper environment and in the critical age in which He lived. In the East, the usages of daily life do not vary; this is a fact upon which too much stress cannot be laid. The East is stationary. In Palestine the same customs have survived not only the most terrible convulsions through which any country has ever passed, but also a total change of the population. The Arabs of to-day have the same practices as the Jews of old. Many of these are described in Genesis, and are as old as the times of the patriarchs. Jewish Children. It is well known that among the Jews the birth of a child was hailed with special delight, and the barrenness of a woman was a reproach, and might even be made sufficient reason for a divorce. There was less joy over the birth of a daughter than of a son; yet much care was bestowed upon her education.1 A midwife assisted at the birth.2 The child was bathed and rubbed with salt to harden the skin, and then wrapped in swaddling clothes.3 The father, who was not present at the time of the birth, then came in and took the child upon his knees. If the grandfather was still living, he sometimes had this privilege.4 It was expressly forbidden to make an exhibition of the children. Philo has an admirable chapter on this subject;5 and although the law of Moses says nothing on this point, it is certain that the exhibition of children, as practised by the Greeks and Romans, horrified the Jews. Download or read book Did Jesus Speak Greek written by G. Scott Gleaves and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2015-05-12 with total page 267 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Did Jesus speak Greek? An affirmative answer to the question will no doubt challenge traditional presuppositions. The question relates directly to the historical preservation of Jesus's words and theology. Traditionally, the authenticity of Jesus's teaching has been linked to the recovery of the original Aramaic that presumably underlies the Gospels. The Aramaic Hypothesis infers that the Gospels represent theological expansions, religious propaganda, or blatant distortions of Jesus's teachings. Consequently, uncovering the original Aramaic of Jesus's teachings will separate the historical Jesus from the mythical personality. G. Scott Gleaves, in Did Jesus Speak Greek?, contends that the Aramaic Hypothesis is inadequate as an exclusive criterion of historical Jesus studies and does not aptly take into consideration the multilingual culture of first-century Palestine. Evidence from archaeological, literary, and biblical data demonstrates Greek linguistic dominance in Roman Palestine during the first century CE. Such preponderance of evidence leads not only to the conclusion that Jesus and his disciples spoke Greek but also to the recognition that the Greek New Testament generally and the Gospel of Matthew in particular were original compositions and not translations of underlying Aramaic sources.

Book What Did Jesus Look Like

Download or read book What Did Jesus Look Like written by Joan E. Taylor and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2018-02-08 with total page 289 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Jesus Christ is arguably the most famous man who ever lived. His image adorns countless churches, icons, and paintings. He is the subject of millions of statues, sculptures, devotional objects and works of art. Everyone can conjure an image of Jesus: usually as a handsome, white man with flowing locks and pristine linen robes. But what did Jesus really look like? Is our popular image of Jesus overly westernized and untrue to historical reality? This question continues to fascinate. Leading Christian Origins scholar Joan E. Taylor surveys the historical evidence, and the prevalent image of Jesus in art and culture, to suggest an entirely different vision of this most famous of men. He may even have had short hair.
