Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Holocaust, or the Witch of Monzie: A Poem, Illustrative of the Cruelties of Superstition; Lays of Palestine; And Other Poems; To Which Is Prefixed, Enchantment Disenchanted; Or, a Treatise on Superstition The following Work is so much the creature of nu looked-for circumstances, that the author, who is pain fully conscious of its many imperfections, and who trusts that his pretensions are as humble as his talents, is fain to take refuge under this fact as his apology for venturing, on the present occasion, within public gaze. The Treatise on Superstition, which constitutes the first part of the volume, is the fruit of some thought, and the subj ect has occasionally, at distant intervals, occupied the writer's attention. At the same time, if any merit is claimed on the score of originality, it is not in point of matter but in point of method that he ventures respectfully to put forward this claim. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A much-anticipated follow-up to Nothing More to Lose, this is only the second poetry collection translated into English from a vital voice of Arabic literature. “We drag histories behind us,” the Palestinian poet Najwan Darwish writes in Exhausted on the Cross, “here / where there’s neither land / nor sky.” In pared-down lines, brilliantly translated from the Arabic by Kareem James Abu-Zeid, Darwish records what Raúl Zurita describes as “something immemorial, almost unspeakable”—a poetry driven by a “moral imperative” to be a “colossal record of violence and, at the same time, the no less colossal record of compassion.” Darwish’s poems cross histories, cultures, and geographies, taking us from the grime of modern-day Shatila and the opulence of medieval Baghdad to the gardens of Samarkand and the open-air prison of present-day Gaza. We join the Persian poet Hafez in the conquered city of Shiraz and converse with the Prophet Mohammad in Medina. Poem after poem evokes the humor in the face of despair, the hope in the face of nightmare.

Download or read book Enemy of the Sun written by Naseer Aruri and published by Seven Stories Press. This book was released on 2025-02-18 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A collection of Palestinian poetry originally published in 1970 that resonates with liberation and civil rights struggles around the world. This updated edition for the current generation of activists features new poems translated by Edmund Ghareeb, an internationally recognized Lebanese-American scholar, and a new foreword by Dr. Greg Thomas. In 1971, in the wake of George Jackson’s killing by San Quentin prison guards, a poem entitled “Enemy of the Sun” was found among ninety-nine books in the revolutionary’s cell. The handwritten poem came to be circulated in Black Panther newspapers under Jackson’s name, assumed to be a vestige of his more than a decade long incarceration. But Jackson never wrote the poem; it was authored by the Palestinian poet Sameeh Al-Qassem and had been included in an anthology of the same title a year before Jackson’s death. Originally published by Drum & Spear, the publishing arm of the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee, Enemy of the Sun: Poetry of Palestinian Resistance links twelve poets working in a poetics of refusal and of hope. Bearing witness to decades of Zionist occupation, to a diaspora exiled in refugee camps and writers held captive in Israeli jails, the collection offers a means to an end: “as poetry, yes it sings—as bullets on a mission; it calls for change.” In each poem is a whole life—joy, love, beauty, rage, sorrow, suffering—and in each life is a record of resistance: the traces of a people who refuse to leave their homeland, who time and again alchemize grief into principled struggle. In the intertwined histories of this book, and in the unyielding political edge of the poems themselves, is a long story of solidarity between oppressed peoples: from Palestine to South Africa to Algeria to Vietnam to the United States.
