Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A fascinating, comprehensive, accessible account of conodont fossils—one of paleontology’s greatest mysteries: “Deserves to be widely read and enjoyed” (Priscum). Stephen Jay Gould borrowed from Winston Churchill when he described the eel-like conodont animal as a riddle wrapped in a mystery inside an enigma. The search for its identity confounded scientists for more than a century. Some thought it a slug, others a fish, a worm, a plant, even a primitive ancestor of ourselves. As the list of possibilities grew, an answer to the riddle never seemed any nearer. Would the animal that left behind the miniscule fossils known as conodonts ever be identified? Three times the creature was found, but each was quite different from the others. Were any of them really the one? Simon J. Knell takes the reader on a journey through 150 years of scientific thinking, imagining, and arguing. Slowly the animal begins to reveal traces of itself: its lifestyle, its remarkable evolution, its witnessing of great catastrophes, its movements over the surface of the planet, and finally its anatomy. Today the conodont animal remains perhaps the most disputed creature in the zoological world.

Book Conodont Studies Commemorating the 150th Anniversary of the First Conodont Paper Pander 1856 and the 40th Anniversary of the Pander Society

Download or read book Conodont Studies Commemorating the 150th Anniversary of the First Conodont Paper Pander 1856 and the 40th Anniversary of the Pander Society written by D. Jeffrey Over and published by . This book was released on 2009 with total page 156 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Conodonts are extinct chordates resembling eels, known mainly from tooth-like microfossils called elements, found in Late Cambrian to Late Triassic fossil deposits (495 to 200 MYA). The nine manuscripts in this volume were, for the most part, first presented at conferences dedicated to conodont studies in 2006-2007 that each celebrated two milestones in conodont studies, the 150th anniversary of Christian H. Pander's 1856 paper that first described and illustrated conodonts, and the organization of the society for conodont enthusiasts that now bears his name in 1967. These papers cover a wide range of topics, times, and regions, illustrating the broad utility of conodonts, primarily as biostratigraphic tools, but also in studies of, although not limited to, geochemistry, paleobiology, paleogeography, and sequence stratigraphy."--Publisher's website.

Book Phylogeny Speciation and Palaeoecology of the Early Carboniferous Mississippian Conodont Genus Mestognathus

Download or read book Phylogeny Speciation and Palaeoecology of the Early Carboniferous Mississippian Conodont Genus Mestognathus written by Peter H. Von Bitter and published by . This book was released on 1986 with total page 474 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mestognathus, an important Early Carboniferous conodont genus whose appearance has generally been thought to coincide with, and define, the base of the Visean, evolved from Clydagnathus during the Tournaisian and ranges from that stage into the Namurian. Five species, including M. harmalai sp. nov. and M. praebeckmanni sp. nov. , are distinguished by the gradual phyletic development of the parapet, the fixed blade, the anterior notch, the position of the carinal deflection, and the increasing tendency to evert the basal cavity. Mestognathus dhuensis and M. neddensis are demonstrated to be synonyms of M. beckmanni, M. bipluti, or Mestognathus spp.
