Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Medieval Art of Illumination as Applied to Lincoln's Gettysburg Address Illumination in art received its first impetus with the introduction of Parchment. Parchment, as a receiving medium, had distinct advantages over the earlier form of Papyrus, being less brittle at the edges, and withstanding corrections and expunging better. Moreover, Parchment had a freer surface and thus proved to be the spark of life that gave birth to Illumination in manuscript. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A basic manual on medieval illumination providing both a historical overview and practical how-to guide. The book is divided into two parts, "the first dealing with the history, definition, and characteristics of illumination, with particular reference to manuscripts owned by the British Museum, and the second providing practical directions on how to illuminate manuscripts, an overview of colors and how to make them, and an array of handy "tricks" detailing the many different techniques one could use to make modern manuscripts look more authentic. Freeman also included individual tables listing the dates, titles, interesting points, and museum locations of manuscripts from England, France, Italy, Germany, and the Near East to help his readers find for themselves actual examples on public display at the British Museum that could be used as historical and technical references in comparison to their own artistic efforts--even going so far as to point out that, despite popular belief to the contrary, female enthusiasts were also welcome at the British Museum, pointing out in the text's final note that "there are seats specially set apart for ladies" in the Museum's reading room"--An online description, "Delamotte's 1860 Primer of the Art of Illumination" by the Rare Books and Manuscripts Library of The Ohio State University

Book Medieval Illuminators and Their Methods of Work

Download or read book Medieval Illuminators and Their Methods of Work written by Jonathan James Graham Alexander and published by Yale University Press. This book was released on 1992-01-01 with total page 230 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Who were the medieval illuminators? How were their hand-produced books illustrated and decorated? In this beautiful book Jonathan Alexander presents a survey of manuscript illumination throughout Europe from the fourth to the sixteenth century. He discusses the social and historical context of the illuminators' lives, considers their methods of work, and presents a series of case studies to show the range and nature of the visual sources and the ways in which they were adapted, copied, or created anew. Alexander explains that in the early period, Christian monasteries and churches were the main centers for the copying of manuscripts, and so the majority of illuminators were monks working in and for their own monasteries. From the eleventh century, lay scribes and illuminators became increasingly numerous, and by the thirteenth century, professional illuminators dominated the field. During this later period, illuminators were able to travel in search of work and to acquire new ideas, they joined guilds with scribes or with artists in the cities, and their ranks included nuns and secular women. Work was regularly collaborative, and the craft was learned through an apprenticeship system. Alexander carefully analyzes surviving manuscripts and medieval treatises in order to explain the complex and time-consuming technical processes of illumination - its materials, methods, tools, choice of illustration, and execution. From rare surviving contracts, he deduces the preoccupation of patrons with materials and schedules. Illustrating his discussion with examples chosen from religious and secular manuscripts made all over Europe, Alexander recreates the astonishing variety and creativity ofmedieval illumination. His book will be a standard reference for years to come.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Illuminated manuscripts are among the most beautiful, precious and mysterious works of Western art. Before the printing press was invented, books were produced by hand and their illustration using brightly coloured pigments and gold embellishments was a labour of love and an act of piety in itself. The results are stunning. The works emanating from the scriptoria of monasteries were mainly religious texts, including illuminated bibles, psalters, and works for private devotion known as books of hours. Illuminated Manuscripts describes the origin and history of illumination in the Middle Ages, covering the artists and their techniques, and the patrons who commissioned them. It explains the subject matter found in medieval works, such as saints and Bible stories and the use of ornamental flourishes, and is illustrated with many fine examples of the genre including the Lindisfarne Gospels and the Book of Kells.

Book The Social Life of Illumination

Download or read book The Social Life of Illumination written by Joyce Coleman and published by Brepols Publishers. This book was released on 2013 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This anthology is the first broadly based exploration of an issue now emerging at the intersection of art history and literary study: how the interplay of images and texts in medieval manuscripts enabled an array of social interactions that helped shape individual and communal experience and identities. An interdisciplinary group of scholars, from Art History, English, and French departments, has combined to explore the ways in which pictures in a book can have a 'social life'. Setting aside the traditional assumption that illuminated manuscripts were meant chiefly for the eyes of solitary reader-viewers, the essays in this anthology demonstrate that illuminations took on social dimension in many ways. They could cue internal dialogues with religious figures or family members; they could be described, explained, and/or viewed communally during public readings; and they could draw their viewers into joint celebration of core secular or religious values. As much as architectural monuments, contracts, and rituals, illuminations provide a way for us to map the multiple dimensions of medieval social life.

Book Painting the Page in the Age of Print

Download or read book Painting the Page in the Age of Print written by Jeffrey F. Hamburger and published by PIMS. This book was released on 2018 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The history of the book in the fifteenth century is especially associated in German-speaking countries with Gutenberg's invention of printing with movable type. Over a century of scholarship has tended, often in rather gratuitous fashion, to dismiss the majority of illuminated manuscripts produced in central Europe between around 1400 and the Reformation as mediocre manifestations of a culture in decline. This book--originally published in German to accompany a series of exhibitions in Germany, Austria, and Switzerland from 2015 to 2017--was written to challenge these prejudices and the weight of tradition which they represent. It contains four wide-ranging art historical essays which for the first time give an overview of fifteenth-century illumination in Central Europe."--
