Book The Carcinogenic Effects Of Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons

Download or read book The Carcinogenic Effects Of Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons written by Andreas Luch and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 2005-08-22 with total page 514 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides an overview on the molecular mode of action of carcinogenic polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs). PAHs are by-products arising from incomplete combustion of organic matter that are frequently released into our environment, and thus are ubiquitously detectable. Many PAHs are strong carcinogens in rodent bioassays and have been linked to increased incidences of various types of cancer in humans. The present book covers all aspects of PAH-induced carcinogenesis; it is a collection of articles written by some of the most recognizable PAH researchers, reviewing the present knowledge in this field. The topics include: exposure to and biomonitoring of PAHs in the human population; metabolic activation of PAHs; genotoxicity and repair of PAH-induced DNA damage; and factors modulating individual susceptibility to the deleterious effects of PAHs.

Book Environmental Xenobiotics

Download or read book Environmental Xenobiotics written by Mervyn Richardson and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2002-09-11 with total page 453 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The effects of man-made substances (xenobiotics) on the natural environment are described in this volume. It explains why these effects need to be understood, monitored and curtailed, especially in developing countries.

Book Aquatic and Surface Photochemistry

Download or read book Aquatic and Surface Photochemistry written by George R. Helz and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2018-01-10 with total page 571 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Aquatic and Surface Photochemistry provides a broad overview of current research in the emerging field of environmental aquatic and surface photochemistry. Selected reviews and current research articles are blended to provide an in-depth treatment of various aspects of this research area. The first part of the text deals with photochemistry in the environment, covering recent research on the following topics: aquatic photochemistry of organic pollutants and agrochemicals, photochemical cycling of carbon and transition metals (especially iron), photochemical formation of reactive oxygen species in natural waters, photoreaction in cloud and rain droplets, and photoreactions on environmental surfaces (soil, ash, metal, oxide). The second part provides discussions and data on both heterogeneous photocatalytic and homogeneous processes, with topics ranging from applications to mechanistic studies. These chapters illustrate the wide diversity of pollutant classes that are degradable by photochemical techniques and the effects of various reaction conditions on the rates and efficiency of the techniques. Current kinetic studies are presented, which provide new information about the role of adsorption and the nature of the reactive oxidizing species that mediate these photoremediation processes. This book will interest civil, chemical, and environmental engineers, as well as chemists, soil scientists, geochemists, and atmospheric chemists.

Book Petroleum Microbiology

Download or read book Petroleum Microbiology written by Trevor Jones and published by Editions OPHRYS. This book was released on with total page 902 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Hydrocarbons and their derivatives (oxygenated and chlorinated, in particular), both natural and xenobiotic, represent a very large class of compounds whose conversions and degradation by microorganisms cover an extremely rich field, whose concepts are detailed in this book. The fascinating evolution of these concepts over the last twenty years has revealed the extent of the processes implemented in the environment and has multiplied their industrial applications. The resulting achievements and the current developments are described in this book. The English edition of this reference manual is an entirely revised and updated version of the French edition. It is intended for professionals, microbiologists and chemists, as well as scientists, engineers, teachers and post-doctoral researchers, who are interested by the conversions of hydrocarbons and by microbial ecology. The French edition of this book was awarded a special mention for engineering education text book by the Roberval Prize committee in 2007.

Book WHO Guidelines for Indoor Air Quality

Download or read book WHO Guidelines for Indoor Air Quality written by and published by World Health Organization. This book was released on 2010 with total page 488 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents WHO guidelines for the protection of public health from risks due to a number of chemicals commonly present in indoor air. The substances considered in this review, i.e. benzene, carbon monoxide, formaldehyde, naphthalene, nitrogen dioxide, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (especially benzo[a]pyrene), radon, trichloroethylene and tetrachloroethylene, have indoor sources, are known in respect of their hazardousness to health and are often found indoors in concentrations of health concern. The guidelines are targeted at public health professionals involved in preventing health risks of environmental exposures, as well as specialists and authorities involved in the design and use of buildings, indoor materials and products. They provide a scientific basis for legally enforceable standards.

Book Postlabelling Methods for Detection of DNA Adducts

Download or read book Postlabelling Methods for Detection of DNA Adducts written by D. H. Phillips and published by . This book was released on 1993 with total page 420 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the first book devoted to postlabelling methods, an important new analytical methodology. Postlabelling methods have a wide range of applications: these include studies of pathways of metabolic activation of chemical carcinogens, studies of oxidative damage to DNA, monitoring occupational exposure to carcinogens, the association between DNA adducts and disease, the possible role of DNA adducts in hormonal carcinogenesis and aging, the study of complex environmental mixtures of carcinogens and monitoring the effects of such mixtures on various ecosystems. Because of the high sensitivity of the postlabelling methods, they can also be applied to humans who are exposed to low levels, and many groups have concentrated their efforts towards the evaluation of adduct formation in relation to exposure and identification of cancer causing agents.
