What, O Man, shall God remember when the world of men is cold? All the anguish, all the violence, that have wracked it from of old? Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Fragrant Note Book: Romance and Legend of the Flower Garden and the Bye-Way Wandering along the lanes and bye-ways of life, should you choose certain turns in their prescribed order you would find yourself (as it seems that you have) facing the modest little lodge of my dumb porter. He is dumb and he is ancient, and that of itself being unusual should prove to be interesting, since the aged are customarily garrulous; but he is a good chap withal and will come stumping to meet you from his little shelter which has a back and sides but is open in front. He calls it "The Bindings." The Arab has a saying that where he has struck flint to tinder and tinder to wood and the warming blaze has sprung up, there for the time being the son of Allah is at home. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Garden, Vol. 79: Notes of the Week, January, 2, 1915 Funkia subcordata alba odorata.40me three years ago, in September, a London firm exhibited in Edinburgh a plant of this Funkia in flower. The plant attracted me, being the only pure white Funkia I had seen. Its fragrance and its late flowering also weighed with me, so I purchased a plant. Judge of my disappointment, however, when I say that, though I planted it under conditions where Funkias and hardy plants generally thrive well, it has not yet produced a single bloom, and, instead of developing, the plant has hardly held its own. I should be glad to know if any other readers of the garden have tried this Plantain Lily, and, if so, with what result - charles comfort, Midlothian. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Conversations on Gardening: With Incidental Notes on Natural History The best preface to this little work will be an account of what has been attempted in it. The utility of exciting in the minds of young persons a fondness for gardening is universally admitted. That there are several excellent works intended for this purpose is undeniable, but the author thinks that, generally speaking, they are too technical, and likely, from the practical difficulty of their instructions, and from the time and expense required to effect what they propose, to discourage rather than to aid the attempts of the young gardener. A child who would gladly garden, and raise flowers by his own skill and labour, is mortified at reading a description of beautiful plants which he cannot hope to succeed in rearing, for want of the hot-bed, stove, forcing-house, &c., required for their culture. But, all the useful part of the occupation, as a rational and inno cent recreation, tending to form habits of industry, order, and observation, may be attained in a garden, where nothing but the more common and hardier plants are cultivated. This book was released on 2017-11-23 with total page 594 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Journal of the New York Botanical Garden, 1919, Vol. 20 The volume published, dedicated to one of the finest of Colom bia's scholars and statesmen. Michael A. Caro. After a brief geological introduction, divides into three portions. The first part. The therapeutic flora, runs over the vegetation of the country, for the dicotyledons family by family, listing the best known and especially the medicinal species, and making for each some entry of locality and of medicinal use. Often the latter entries are quite full, and while I am little qualified to judge, I should suppose that this is a mine of valuable observations. The monocotyledons and higher cryptogams are not so fully entered, although he has much to say of these. An industrial flora follows on pages 132 to 151, similar in treatment but much briefer. To me in my travels in remote sections of the country the most valuable portion of the book is the third, the index of the common names of the plants used in Colombia. This embraces pages 153 to 275, and is much more than an index. Each entry contains the scientific name of the species, and very generally notes of occurrence and uses. In a country where physicians and medicines are rare and few. The people pay that close attention to the flora which must have characterized the English in the times when our wealth of English names came into being, and so it is but natural to find almost every Colombiano well versed in plant names. To a novice, Cortes' index was indeed a key to the more important part of the flora. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
