Book excerpt: Padre Island, Texas, USA. Padre Island National Seashore Tourism. Every March, like clockwork, students cram into cars and head to South Padre Island for spring break fun in the sun and 24-hour beach bashes. While the island is still home to spring breakers for just over a month, the area has seen a rebirth of sorts as a popular family vacation destination. That's because South Padre, or SPI, delivers with wide sandy beaches, sparkling blue water and a mixture of fun activities for kids of all ages. But there's more to SPI than beach revelry. Kiteboarding is a favorite pastime and several sports outfitters offer deep-sea fishing trips and dolphin-watching excursions. The consistently warm weather also seduces northern Texans seeking refuge from the cold. And it's understandable: Just a day's drive from major Texas cities like Houston and Dallas, this seaside paradise is right in the state's own backyard.

Book excerpt: Mustang Island, Texas USA. Mustang Island, Padre Island, Port Aransas Travel Guide. The Gulf Coast here is essentially one 131-mile-long beach, including 18-mile Mustang Island and massive 113-mile North Padre Island (the second-largest island by area in the US, after New York's Long Island). The most notable sections for beachgoers are Mustang Island State Park and Padre Island National Seashore. On the northern tip of Mustang Island, the town of Port Aransas (Ah-ran-ziss), or Port A to locals, is in many ways the most appealing beach destination on the Texas coast. It is small enough that you can bike or walk everywhere, but large enough to host loads of activities and nightlife. The pace is very relaxed, and daily life is dominated by hanging out on the beach, fishing and doing nothing perhaps followed up by a few cold drinks as the sun goes down

Book Ralph W Yarborough the People s Senator

Download or read book Ralph W Yarborough the People s Senator written by Patrick L. Cox and published by University of Texas Press. This book was released on 2010-06-28 with total page 509 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A compelling biography of a Texas senator who was “a defiant, dedicated liberal in the face of conservative Southern politics” (Publishers Weekly). Revered by many Texans and other Americans as “the People’s Senator,” Ralph Webster Yarborough fought for “the little people” in a political career that places him in the ranks of the most influential leaders in Texas history. The only U.S. senator representing a former Confederate state to vote for every significant piece of modern civil rights legislation, Yarborough became a cornerstone of Lyndon Johnson’s Great Society programs in the areas of education, environmental preservation, and health care. In doing so, he played a major role in the social and economic modernization of Texas and the American South. He often defied conventional political wisdom with his stands against powerful interests and with his vocal opposition to the Vietnam War. Yet to this day, his admirers speak of Yarborough as an inspiration for public service and a model of political independence and integrity. This biography offers the first in-depth look at the life and career of Ralph Yarborough. Patrick L. Cox draws on Yarborough’s personal and professional papers, as well as on extensive interviews with the senator and his associates, to follow Yarborough from his formative years in East Texas through his legal and judicial career in the 1930s, decorated military service in World War II, unsuccessful campaigns for Texas governor in the 1950s, distinguished tenure in the United States Senate from 1957 to 1970, and return to legal practice through the 1980s. Although Yarborough’s liberal politics set him at odds with most of the Texas power brokers of his time, including Lyndon Johnson, his accomplishments have become part of the national fabric. Medicare recipients, beneficiaries of the Cold War G.I. Bill, and even beachcombers on Padre Island National Seashore all share in the lasting legacy of Senator Ralph Yarborough.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: PADRE ISLAND By RICHARD MERRILL DALTON, JR. Robert Evans, a Vietnam veteran returns home to Corpus Christi, Texas. The Johnson Administration has opened the new National Seashore on the barrier Island which protects the mainland from the ravages of the Gulf of Mexico. He is given the opportunity to find himself as a National Park Ranger. After finishing his college education at Texas A&I University in neighboring Kingsville, Texas he meets and marries Glenda Strahan from Lockhart, Texas. This chapter deals with a description of the park. It's windy roads to keep traffic slow and allow the visitor a greater view of the scenic area. The Ranger station is described along with the rest of the park. Robert starts his position as a seasonal Ranger with the USNPS. He attends the orientation sessions given by the staff of the park. He is informed that his primary function is law enforcement and drug interdiction. He is also teamed up for his first encounter with Tommy McPhearson, an overzealous cop in the uniform of a Park Ranger. He re-defines the image from his cowboy boots to his mirrored sunglasses. J.J. LaCour is man who is among other things a self made pilot who has fallen on hard times. His wife has left him and accused him of dealing in narcotics. She is correct! He flies his little Piper aircraft down the Texas coast to Mexico and back to Houston, Dallas, San Antonio, and even New Orleans. Robert Evans goes on his first patrol with the resident Park Technician. Tommy McPherson. Tommy is the archetype small town cop with to much power and an inflated reputation. He fits the description from his cowboy boots to his mirrored sunglasses. He is supposed to intimidate Robert with his prowess. Robert finds it disgusting. Robert returns home to report his evening with Tommy. Robert Evans has roots in Corpus Christi, this chapter shows his attachment to the area and points out that he is dedicated to the Park Service. He knows the lifestyle of the section of Corpus Christi known as the bluff in a way that outsiders and northerners could never grasp. Robert is preparing to go back to work and he spends the morning before work which is from three that afternoon to eleven that night trying to get hold of himself. He is not afraid, he really wants to teach. He has flashbacks of his experiences along the Laguna Madre and the people he knows there. His house and his wife. The saga of his boat that was given to him by his father. He flashes back to his attachments for Corpus Christi and how it is an unusual and special place to him. Robert goes to work for his second shift only to find that McPhearson and Tankersly had made a big bust on the beach and had hauled a large number of people into town to place them in jail for narcotics use. He has to use a big Dodge power wagon as a patrol vehicle. He is augmented into going down the beach for about thirty miles to an isolated site where he rescues a couple stranded because their vehicle is in the surf. He sees an aircraft and it is dropping marijuana in the surf. The pilot shoots at him. he gets the people back to safety but notices that they are not above suspicion. Mondays and Tuesdays are his normal day off but they were usually spent in court if he had made any arrests at all during the previous weekend. He went to court as the arresting officer even though he was the junior. Bruce Tankersly, the chief of law enforcement couldn't make it. He said that he had family problems and begged off from Jack Reed, the Chief Ranger. Robert goes to court and knows that Bill didn't come because they had made a shaky bust. The defense attorney cuts Robert to pieces and has the evidence suppressed, the case is thrown out. Robert goes home and on his way stops at a local dive for a beer. He is given a Spanish silver piece as change. He realizes what it is when he gets home. It was taken from the island in violation of the Texas Antiquities act. Robert was placed on dispatcher duty by

Book Kayaking the Texas Coast

Download or read book Kayaking the Texas Coast written by John Whorff and published by Texas A&M University Press. This book was released on 2011-02-10 with total page 152 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “Few experiences compare with navigating a sea kayak through a large sandy bay lined with oyster-shell beaches, past golden sand dunes into rough ocean waters, then surfing back onto a wind-swept beach at sunset.”—from the Introduction Half of the nearly 400-mile Texas coastline is flanked by barrier islands. Behind them, large and small bays shelter estuarine marshes, oyster-reef communities, and sea grass meadows that teem with wildlife, creating a bird watcher's and angler's paradise. For an intimate encounter with these natural treasures, no other water craft can compare to a kayak. Veteran kayaker John Whorff’s Kayaking the Texas Coast is an essential guide for beginning and experienced kayakers to the many miles of shoreline that surround the shallow bays, lagoons, and islands of the Texas coast. Novices will appreciate this book’s detailed information about where to paddle and camp, what to see, and where to obtain additional information about safety and route planning. Accomplished kayakers will enjoy Whorff’s enticing route descriptions and other pertinent details on paddling the Texas coastline. Opening with an extended introductory text that covers kayaks and equipment, safety considerations and emergencies, camping dos and don’ts, and helpful resources, Kayaking the Texas Coast also lists useful websites and guidebooks. In the main portion of the text, the coast is organized into ten destinations, from the Galveston Bay complex in the north to Boca Chica State Park in the south. For each of these destinations, Whorff provides information on navigational aids, planning considerations, accommodations, and directions to launch sites before describing various paddling routes within each destination—around seventy routes in all. Each route is ranked for difficulty as “beginner,” “intermediate,” or “advanced.” Detailed maps and vivid photographs by the author complete the package. "Kayaking the Texas Coast is your must-have guidebook to the coastline and bays of the Lone Star State. Many miles of sea kayaking adventure are described, along with maps and discussion of the natural world encountered along the way. My copy will be riding in car and kayak with me. I look forward to seeing with my own eyes what the author has described and mapped."-- Natalie Wiest, founder and director, Galveston Bay Information
