Book excerpt: Abstract: "While Packet Fair Queueing (PFQ) algorithms provide both bounded delay and fairness in wired networks, they cannot be applied directly to wireless networks. The key difficulty is that in wireless networks sessions can experience location-dependent channel errors. This may lead to situations in which a session receives significantly less service than it is supposed to, while another receives more. This results in large discrepancies between the sessions' virtual times, making it difficult to provide both delay-guarantees and fairness simultaneously. Our contribution is twofold. First, we identify a set of properties, called Channel-condition Independent Fair (CIF), that a Packet Fair Queueing algorithm should have in a wireless environment: (1) delay and throughput guarantees for error-free sessions, (2) long term fairness for error sessions, (3) short term fairness for error-free sessions, and (4) graceful degradation for sessions that have received excess service. Second, we present a methodology for adapting PFQ algorithms for wireless networks and we apply this methodology to derive a novel algorithm based on Start-time Fair Queueing, called Channel-condition Independent packet Fair Queueing (CIF-Q), that achieves all the above properties. To evaluate the algorithm we provide both theoretical analysis and simulation results."

For instance, it is forecasted that after 2005 the mobile traffic turnover in Europe will exceed that of fixed telephone traffic and the penetration of Internet access through mobile will exceed that of fixed access. It is expected that the new value added services will be Internet-based and the IP traffic will outweigh the amount of traditional ISDN based telephone traffic. The transition from the existing telecommunications services to mobile and Internet based ones will change the service infrastructure as well as the customer and service management structures. In wireless communications there are several new standards being developed and implemented to improve the data transmission rate over radio channels, to combine both voice, packet data and multimedia services in the terminals and to improve the service quality and usability. Narrow band packet radio standards such as General Packet Radio Service (GPRS) and i-Mode are already operative and broadband IMT-2000 standards, also called as Third Generation (3G) Mobile, have been developed in Japan, Europe and US. At the same time Wireless LAN and Bluetooth technologies mature and provide short-range data access to terminal devices. The emerging new technologies create opportunities not only to incumbent teleoperators but also to new network operators, IT companies and new service and content providers.

A Mobile Ad Hoc Network is a self-organizing multi-hop wireless network where all hosts (often called nodes) participate in the routing and data forwarding process. The dependence on nodes to relay data packets for others makes mobile ad hoc networks extremely susceptible to various malicious and selfish behaviors. This point is largely overlooked during the early stage of MANET research. Many works simply assume nodes are inherently cooperative and benign. However, experiences from the wired world manifest that the reverse is usually true; and many works [3] [10] [9] [8] [12] [19] have pointed out that the impact of malicious and selfish users must be carefully investigated. The goal of this research is to address the cooperation problem and related security issues in wireless ad hoc networks. As a rule of thumb, it is more desirable to include security mechanisms in the design phase rather than continually patching the system for security breaches. As pointed out in [2] [1], there can be both selfish and malicious nodes in a mobile ad hoc network. Selfish nodes are most concerned about their energy consumption and intentionally drop packets to save power. The purpose of malicious nodes, on the other hand, is to attack the network using various intrusive techniques. In general, nodes in an ad hoc network can exhibit Byzantine behaviors.
