Book Making Eye Health a Population Health Imperative

Download or read book Making Eye Health a Population Health Imperative written by National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2017-01-15 with total page 587 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The ability to see deeply affects how human beings perceive and interpret the world around them. For most people, eyesight is part of everyday communication, social activities, educational and professional pursuits, the care of others, and the maintenance of personal health, independence, and mobility. Functioning eyes and vision system can reduce an adult's risk of chronic health conditions, death, falls and injuries, social isolation, depression, and other psychological problems. In children, properly maintained eye and vision health contributes to a child's social development, academic achievement, and better health across the lifespan. The public generally recognizes its reliance on sight and fears its loss, but emphasis on eye and vision health, in general, has not been integrated into daily life to the same extent as other health promotion activities, such as teeth brushing; hand washing; physical and mental exercise; and various injury prevention behaviors. A larger population health approach is needed to engage a wide range of stakeholders in coordinated efforts that can sustain the scope of behavior change. The shaping of socioeconomic environments can eventually lead to new social norms that promote eye and vision health. Making Eye Health a Population Health Imperative: Vision for Tomorrow proposes a new population-centered framework to guide action and coordination among various, and sometimes competing, stakeholders in pursuit of improved eye and vision health and health equity in the United States. Building on the momentum of previous public health efforts, this report also introduces a model for action that highlights different levels of prevention activities across a range of stakeholders and provides specific examples of how population health strategies can be translated into cohesive areas for action at federal, state, and local levels.

Book Vision and eye screening implementation handbook

Download or read book Vision and eye screening implementation handbook written by World Health Organization and published by World Health Organization. This book was released on 2024-01-10 with total page 104 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The WHO Vision and eye screening implementation handbook (VESIH) offers a step-by-step guidance for conducting vision and eye screenings in community and primary care settings. The evidence-based interventions are drawn from the WHO Package of eye care interventions and developed with a focus on delivering screenings easily, safely, and effectively in low- and low–intermediate-resource settings. The early identification through screenings ensures timely treatments and management to avoid vision impairment in high-risk populations, including newborns, pre-school children, school children, and older adults. To further support country approaches, the VESIH incorporates a section on the advantages and disadvantages of diverse vision and eye screening approaches. Additionally, various pathways for refraction and spectacles service delivery are outlined, along with actionable recommendations aimed at enhancing refractive error services. The VESIH serves as a comprehensive guide for effective vision screenings in diverse settings, contributing to WHO SPECS 2030, in particular, to improve access to refractive services.

Book Report of the 2030 targets on effective coverage of eye care

Download or read book Report of the 2030 targets on effective coverage of eye care written by World Health Organization and published by World Health Organization. This book was released on 2022-10-13 with total page 48 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Report for the 2030 targets on effective coverage of eye care intends to serve as a reference point to commence monitoring progress towards the 2030 global targets that were endorsed by Member States at the 74th World Health Assembly. This report draws on key results from a comprehensive analysis of population-based eye health surveys and includes estimates of effective cataract surgery coverage (eCSC) and effective refractive error coverage (eREC) at the global level, by WHO region, sex and World Bank income level, and the relative quality gap (that is, the percentage difference between ‘effective coverage’ and ‘coverage’). It also serves to highlight key gaps in current data and presents suggestions for additional efforts required to advance the monitoring, policies and programmes for increasing the coverage of eye care interventions.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This practical and handy textbook offers a succinct yet comprehensive overview of the main challenges, issues and solutions in global health in relation to the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) 2030 agenda. Subdivided into 11 parts, devoted each to a macro-topic, the book opens with an introduction to Global Health followed by an overview of the global burden of disease – from child and maternal health to communicable and non-communicable diseases. The authors further examine the social determinants of health, health systems’ features as well as innovations, governance and methods in Global Health. In consideration of the emerging discussions and ideas, and beyond the more traditional and essential elements of global health, the book also looks at the need to re-think the whole concept of global health and the importance of a “decolonized” approach that engages low and lower-middle countries fully. One entire part is then devoted to analyzing the major threats to the health of humanity such as climate change, the need for an ecological approach to health (including “One Health” approaches), and, ultimately, planetary health. Written by an international panel of more than 100 experts, this manual will be an excellent resource for students in a broad range of disciplines – from medicine and other scientific studies to economics, social science, anthropology and international relations. Pragmatic and reader-friendly, it will further be a valuable tool for policymakers, program implementers and those wishing to build knowledge on the meaning, principles and practices of global health.
