Book excerpt: LAMBDA LITERARY OCTOBER'S MOST ANTICIPATED LGBTQIA+ LITERATURE 49th SHELF TOP 22 BOOKS OF 2022 Is love real if the beloved isn’t? Girl, Interrupted meets Rebecca in this taut tale of love and madness When Tia meets Pacifique, it’s a once-in-a-lifetime love. They spend five wild days and nights together, and then Tia wakes up in an ambulance with a collarbone broken in a bike accident — and no trace of Pacifique. Unable to convince anyone that Pacifique exists, Tia winds up in a psychiatric ward, forced to face the possibility that this perfect lover may be a figment of her imagination. While there, Tia meets Andrew, a contemplative man with schizophrenia, who falls in love with Tia. He, too, tells her to forget Pacifique. Who to believe? The medical establishment and her fellow patients? Or her frail human memory? And if Pacifique truly is a figment, is life in the “real world” with Andrew enough? "In concise and vibrant prose, Sarah L. Taggart illuminates the dark corners of delusion (or is it delusion?) and a mental-health system that consigns people to endless limbo. Lucid and destabilizing, graceful and raw, this novel asks: is losing one’s sanity so different from falling in love?" – Deborah Willis, author of The Dark and Other Love Stories "Pacifique turns the psychological thriller on its head, allowing madness to be a meaningful lens through which to see the world instead of a cheap plot twist. Taggart has created a stunning, smart and revolutionary novel here - one that forces its readers to see clearly what so often remains hidden. This book means so much to me. One of the best I've read in years." – Alicia Elliott, author of A Mind Spread Out On The Ground

But law-making is one thing, ensuring compliance quite another. While the enthusiasm and support for international law-making are considerable, caution and mistrust soon re-emerge when disputes arise over implementation. To persuade member States of the OSCE to resort to international conciliation and arbitration, there must be the will to use the Court on the part of States. This work takes stock of the obstacles, whether they be institutional (different mechanisms for the peaceful settlement of disputes), structural (actual limitations to the settlement of disputes between States) or relate to competition (between means of diplomatic settlement and adjudication). This work is based on a Symposium held in Geneva to mark the Constitution of the Court of Conciliation and Arbitration within the OSCE. The contributions deal in particular with a variety of topics which could arise within the framework of the new OSCE Court, such as political and judicial means of settlement, subsidiarity of the new Court, and conciliation and arbitration before that Court.

Book The Tears of a Man Flow Inward

Download or read book The Tears of a Man Flow Inward written by Pacifique Irankunda and published by Random House. This book was released on 2022-03-29 with total page 225 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A prizewinning young author tells the moving story of growing up during Burundi’s ethnic civil war in this powerful memoir hailed as “a jewel of a book” (Margaret MacMillan). “There’s nothing like a great love song, and Pacifique Irankunda sings a beautiful one here to his homeland and to all those who choose love even in the bleakest of times.”—Imbolo Mbue, author of Behold the Dreamers and How Beautiful We Were Pacifique Irankunda’s childhood in Burundi was marked by a thirteen-year civil war—a grueling struggle that destroyed his home, upended his family, and devastated his country’s beautiful culture. As young boys, Paci and his brother slept in the woods on nights when the shooting and violence grew too intense; they hid in tall grass and watched as military units rolled in and leveled their village. Paci’s extraordinary mother, one of the many inspiring beacons of light in this book, led her children—and others in the village—in ingenious acts of resilience through her indomitable kindness and compassion, even toward the soldiers who threatened their lives. Drawing on his own memories and those of his family, Paci tells a story of survival in a country whose rich traditions were lost to the ravages of colonialism and ethnic strife. Written in moving, lyrical prose, The Tears of a Man Flow Inward gives us an illuminating window into what it means to come of age in dark times, and an example of how, even in the midst of uncertainty, violence, and despair, light can almost always be found.
