Book Islands of Hope

Download or read book Islands of Hope written by Paul D’Arcy and published by ANU Press. This book was released on 2023-05-25 with total page 462 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the Pacific, as elsewhere, indigenous communities live with the consequences of environmental mismanagement and over-exploitation but rarely benefit from the short-term economic profits such actions may generate within the global system. National and international policy frameworks ultimately rely on local community assent. Without effective local participation and partnership, these extremely imposed frameworks miss out on millennia of local observation and understanding and seldom deliver viable and sustained environmental, cultural and economic benefits at the local level. This collection argues that environmental sustainability, indigenous political empowerment and economic viability will succeed only by taking account of distinct local contexts and cultures. In this regard, these Pacific indigenous case studies offer ‘islands of hope’ for all communities marginalised by increasingly intrusive—and increasingly rapid—technological changes and by global dietary, economic, political and military forces with whom they have no direct contact or influence.

Book His Way

    Book Details:
  • Author : Barry Gustafson
  • Publisher : Auckland University Press
  • Release : 2000
  • ISBN : 9781869402365
  • Pages : 612 pages

Download or read book His Way written by Barry Gustafson and published by Auckland University Press. This book was released on 2000 with total page 612 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Robert Muldoon was Prime Minister of New Zealand for eight and a half years (1975-1984) and Minister of Finance for fifteen years (1967-72 and 1975-84) during one of the most difficult periods in the country's history. He was the dominant figure in New Zealand's political life over the last half century and one of its most controversial and divisive politicians. This major 'authorised' biography has occupied Professor Gustafson for ten years; it has been extensively researched and long awaited. From the opening chapters with their revealing account of Muldoon's childhood, His Way is gripping reading and will be of wide interest. The chapters on the calling of the 1984 election and on the currency crisis immediately after the election, for example, break new ground. Gustafson's view of Muldoon is fair and tolerant without either anger or sentimentality. It sees him as a champion of ordinary people, a skilled politician determined to preserve the world he had inherited, and an autocratic leader whose vision over time became anachronistic and inflexible. His Way is also, and inevitably, a picture of the changing political landscape from the 1940s to the 1980s, turbulent times very different from the years of depression and war in which Muldoon grew up and which so powerfully shaped his values and perspectives. The book is based on many hours of conversation with Muldoon himself and on interviews with political colleagues, civil servants, family and friends; it is rich with telling detail and revealing anecdote. Gustafoson's masterly biography provides for the first time a detached and detailed assessment of an extraordinary political figure.

Book Linking Trade and Security

Download or read book Linking Trade and Security written by Vinod K. Aggarwal and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-10-10 with total page 261 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The connections between trade and security are hardly new. Analysts and practitioners have clearly recognized this interrelationship since the mercantilist arguments of the 16th and 17th centuries. Despite wishful economic liberal thinking that might prefer to separate the political from the economic, it is widely recognized that trade and security are fundamentally interconnected in the foreign policy of states. Over time, as new forms of trade policy have come into being and the international security environment has evolved, the nexus of these two spheres has grown more complex and scholars have struggled to understand their interconnection This edited volume addresses linkages between trade and security by examining the influence of security factors in driving trade policy measures and the corresponding implications of different types of trade arrangements for international security. Ultimately, the project shows that several elements—traditional economic factors, traditional security factors, and human security factors—can affect the development of trade agreements and unilateral policies, and that trade policies may have both a direct and an indirect effect on traditional and human security. The project focuses on Asia, a region where economics is increasingly important but many security issues still linger unresolved, as a primary setting to test trade linkage theories. It also provides a comparative perspective through examination of how the EU and US have used their trade policies to achieve non-economic goals and how these policies have influenced their security environment. Case studies in this project cover key trade institutions and agreements including the World Trade Organization, the Association of Southeast Asian Nations, ASEAN Plus Three, the East Asia Summit, the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation forum, the Shanghai Cooperation Organization, and bilateral preferential trade agreements.

Book excerpt: Though China remains a relatively weak nuclear power, it has in recent years become central to US strategic policymaking. What explains this shift? How is the US-China strategic nuclear relationship evolving? What role do other states play in shaping it? To address these questions, the authors of US-China Nuclear Relations examine a series of strategic triangles involving China, the US, and one or more key third actors (among them, Australia, India, Iran, Japan, North Korea, Pakistan, Russia, South Korea, and Taiwan). Their work also critically highlights the challenges and opportunities facing Washington and Beijing in this increasingly complex security arena.
