Download or read book A Trip to the Pacific Coast by Automobile Across the Continent written by William Charles Bettis and published by . This book was released on 2015-08-05 with total page 54 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Trip to the Pacific Coast by Automobile Across the Continent: Camping on the Way Every motorist with rich red blood flowing through his veins, when he has a few hours to spare, heads for the country. The great open stretches of field; the soothing murmur of breezes passing through God's Temples - the woods; the gleaming stream and expansive lake; all bathed in golden sunshine, appeals to the primitive in man, as nothing else can do. He is eternally seeking out new roads. Places he has never before seen, because the spirit of adventure predominates and down deep in his innermost heart he dreams of some day starting for the great "Golden West." Everyone is familiar with the slogan "See America First." Let me add: See our great northwest and see it from an automobile if possible. If not, see it from the platform of an observation car. There is nothing in Europe so impressive as our "Wonderland of the World." The odd, startling, beautiful things you can see in our National Parks, Yellowstone, Glacier, Mount Rainier. Yosemite, the Grand Canyon of Arizona, and the splendid Forest Reserves, cannot be duplicated anywhere in the world. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Pacific Coast Vacation The phenomenon of the aurora was ex plained to us, but to our childish imagination Aurora ever remained a maiden whose wonder ful hair of rainbow tints lit up the northern sky. We talked of Aurora, we dreamed of Aurora, and now we are off to see the charming ice maiden of our childhood fancy. Off to Alaska. For years we have dreamed of it; for days and weeks we have breakfasted on Rocky Mountain fiora, lunched on icebergs and glaciers and dined on totem poles and In dian chiefs. Much of the charm of travel in any country comes of the glamour with which fable and legend have enshrouded its historic places. America is rapidly developing a legendary era. Travel up and down the shores of the historic Hudson and note her fabled places. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. To California and the Pacific Coast The promises made by the writer when the invitation was extended were more than kept. And at the Farewell! At the Oakland Mole. There was an increase rather than a decrease of enthusiastic appreciation. It was then that the writing of a book descriptive of the trip was suggested. And the pleasant task fell into my hands. The 1910 trip, as was that of 1896. Was planned by the Southern Cali fornia Hotel Association, under the presidency of John S. Mitchell. Of the Hollenbeck and the Alexandria. But, as is well known in our State. And growing to be well known throughout the country. California is a unit in working for its own welfare and. Therefore. The California Hotel Asso ciation, of San Francisco. Was asked to join with the Southern California Hotel Association in extending the invitation. Exactly as they did on the former occasion. Although San Francisco was still working strenuously to completely recover from the disastrous effects of the tragedy of 1906, she responded with her usual cordiality and vim. And the result was the invitation was extended by the two associations that the annual meeting be held in Los Angeles in 1910. And entertainment be extended throughout the State to San Francisco. The invitation was duly accepted. And we have yet to hear of one person who has regretted it. The results. Better than any words of mine. Show how successfully everything was done. Nothing was forgotten no one was ignored, everyone and everything was attended to. So that the program went through without a hitch. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Flight in Spring: In the Car Lucania From New York to the Pacific Coast and Back During April and May, 1898 It seemed like a dream to be invited to join a party on a private Pullman car for an extended tour of close on eight thousand miles, all in these our United States! Yet such was the opportunity which was generously offered us in this springtime of 1898. It was to be "A Flight in Spring" of most intense interest. The journey was to embrace in its continued circuit, from New York back to New York, points as widely separated as New Orleans and San Francisco. It was to traverse many States and Territories, and was to be accomplished with every adjunct of unstinted comfort and refinement. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Towards the Sunset: Some Impressions of California and the West in 1915 Going West! These have been magic words to me as long as I can remember. And now John and I were to follow the westward trail to the Pacific. The mere terms Desert, Sierras, Grand Canyon and Yosemite had long been words to conjure with, words that opened up alluring vistas to the imagination, and now we were to see them with our own eyes. It was very exciting. Time was when the life of a gypsy, wandering over the country in a lumbering wagon, was my ideal. Later I transferred my aspirations to life on a canal boat, per haps because of the water view. But traveling West on a Limited is a far cry from either gypsy wagon or canal boat. It is, in fact, the most fascinating means of get ting over the ground that I, as a chronic ga'en aboot body, have been able to discover.
