Book Journey to Ollantaytambo

Download or read book Journey to Ollantaytambo written by Ethan Hubbard and published by . This book was released on 1990 with total page 198 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Photographer Hubbard ( First Light ) is as accomplished in the use of language as in the use of the camera. The 71 black-and-white pictures here convey the ageless dignity of people and places, though their slightly romanticized aura fails to reflect some of the harsher realities Hubbard writes of. The accompanying text also captures and preserves moments in time in simple, lyrical prose. Hubbard settled into the ancient Peruvian town of Ollantaytambo in a quest for spiritual enrichment, yet he omits nothing of the equivocal day-to-day reality he discovers: his camping gear is whisked away by thieves during a split-second lapse in his attention; government troops fighting the guerrillas of the Sendero Luminoso become increasingly intrusive; and his closest friend and spiritual comrade takes money Hubbard has given him to start a clinic and uses it for himself and his friends instead. But Hubbard finds the people themselves and their struggle to survive to be the greatest reservoir of Peru's sacred energy, and he admirably documents it in this lovely book."--From Publishers Weekly.

Book excerpt: I wrote this book after 5 years of research living in Cusco and the Sacred Valley. It covers all of the important Inca sites, as well as those that are far older than the Inca, but are attributed to them by most academics. It is a virtual guide of sorts; there are so many photos in it that the reader need never physically visit the sites, and if you do, will find them easily. There is much more to Cusco than Machu Picchu, which is also described thoroughly here.

Book excerpt: Inca Footprints: I wrote this book as the result of not finding anything similar to it in Cusco, or anywhere. Cusco and the Sacred Valley are full of ancient megalithic stone remains and structures, many of which are far older than the Inca, and this fact is not explained, and in fact not known by many of the guides and tour companies there. This book is the result of 5 years of on the ground research by me, Brien Foerster, and contains so many photos, that the book acts as a virtual tour of the whole area.

Book Geology of the Sacred Valley of the Incas

Download or read book Geology of the Sacred Valley of the Incas written by Larry McMaster and published by Independently Published. This book was released on 2022-04-09 with total page 42 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The citadel of Machu Picchu sits within a batholith of granitic rock of which material the Incas built the structures. Many of the valleys are formed by glacial action forming large gravel moraines at their terminations. Hiram Bingham re-located the ancient citadel which was known by the local indigenous people, descended from the Incas. Sinkholes at Moray are formed by the dissolution of the underlying Maras formation consisting of salt and gypsum. This process forms the 4 sinkholes of the archeological site of Moray. The dissolved salt flows downstream to form the Salinas where local salt farmers collect the salt. The Vilcanota River is the only major community occupying an Inca temple site. The temple site is built of material from the Ollantaytambo formation of early Ordovician age of quartzites, sandstone, shales and ignimbrites. From across the Vilconota River, large pinkish granite porphyry blocks were dragged to the top to adorn the temple. Pisac is also near the Vilcanota River and made of Permo-Triassic breccias and conglomerates consisting of limestones, volcanic and quartzites clasts. The temple site area is made of Rumicolca andesite ashlars. The flow-banded rhyolite intrusive forms a defensive tunnel within this unit leading to the ceremonial area where the Spaniards had destroyed the Intiwatana. The Inca leader Pachacútec was responsible for the construction of the beautiful city of Cusco, Machu Picchu and Sacsayhuaman, the head of the puma. A Cenozoic age diorite intrusive with calcite veinlets, epidote and weak alteration is within this ceremonial place. Glacial grooves are cut into the Rodadero intrusive. Large limestone blocks of many tons of the Upper Cretaceous were quarried from the Sisicancha quarry three kilometers due east of the fortress. This is the place of the winter solecists celebration of Inti Raymi. Qoricancha, the place of the sun, moon and star temples is built of imperial Rumicolca andesite. A large 3-meter golden disc representing the sun and a silver disc representing the moon decorated the temples.
