As the Roman Empire dissolved, a new world emerged as Christian bishops stepped into the power vacuum left by the dismantling of the Empire. Among these potentates, none was more important than the bishop of Rome, the pope. The documents, archaeology, and architecture that issued forth from papal Rome in the seventh and eighth centuries preserve a precious glimpse into novel societal patterns. The underexploited liturgical sources in particular enrich and complicate our historical understanding of this period. They show how liturgy was the ‘social glue’ that held together the Christian society of early medieval Rome - and excluded those who did not belong to it. This study places the liturgy center stage, filling a gap in research on early medieval Rome and demonstrating the utility of investigating how the liturgy functioned in medieval Europe. It includes a detailed analysis of the papal Mass, the central act of liturgy and the most obvious example of the close interaction of liturgy, social relations and power. The first extant Mass liturgy, the First Roman Ordo, is also given a new presentation in Latin here with an English translation and commentary. Other grand liturgical events such as penitential processions are also examined, as well as more mundane acts of worship. Far from a pious business with limited influence, the liturgy established an exchange between humans and the divine that oriented Roman society to God and fostered the dominance of the clergy.

Carl Erdmann developed this argument first in 1935 in a book that is still recognized as basic to an understanding of how the crusades came about. This first edition in English includes notes supplementing those of the German text, a foreword discussing subsequent scholarship, and an amplified bibliography. Paying special attention to the symbolism of banners as well as to literary evidence, the author traces the changes that moved the Western church away from its initial aversion to armed combat and toward acceptance and encouragement of the kind of holy war that the crusades would represent: a war whose specific cause was religion. Erdmann's analysis stresses the role of church reformers and Gregory VII, without neglecting the "popular" idea of crusade that would assure an astonishingly enthusiastic response to Urban II's appeal in 1095. His book provides an unrivaled account of he interaction of the church with war and warriors during the early Middle Ages. Carl Erdmann (1898-1945) taught at the University of Berlin and was associated with the Monumenta Germania historica. Book excerpt: Stephan Kuttner, the historian of canon law, gave the Wimmer Memorial Lecture at Saint Vincent in 1956. His talk, Harmony From Dissonance: An Interpretation of Medieval Canon Law, was published four years later. At the time of his lecture, and certainly at the time of his death, on August 12, 1996, in Berkeley, he was internationally recognized as one of the world's greatest authorities on canon and civil law. Kuttner, a native of Bonn, Germany, received his law degree from Berlin University in 1931. He worked as a research fellow at the Vatican Library and taught at the Lateran University in Rome after fleeing Nazi Germany for Italy. He was a professor at Catholic University of America, Washington, D.C., which has a chair named in his honor. He held the T. Lawrason Riggs Chair of Catholic Studies at Yale, then became the first director of the Robbins Collection in Roman and Canon Law at the University of California, Berkeley School of Law. He taught there for 18 years (1970-1988), and continued as professor emeritus until his death.The Institute of Research and Study in Medieval Canon Law was established in Washington, D.C. Its headquarters were transferred to Yale in 1964, and later to Berkeley in 1970. The Institute was relocated to the University of Munich in 1991. Yale now hosts the Kuttner Institute Library. The Institute was named after Kuttner in 1996, who served as the its board president from 1955 to 1991; as chairman of the board from 1991 until 1996; and as editor, then editor emeritus of the Bulletin of Medieval Canon Law and as chief editor of the Monumenta Iuris Canonici.
